Is there genuinely ANYONE who could afford to get a couple of weeks shopping into the house, who hasn't?

And if so, WHY?

@MillieEpple yes but how long are you stockpiling for? No one knows when this is going to end or when you’re gonna get it?
You could end up spending a fortune for no need

ghostee · 04/10/2020 22:42

D - everyone else

So the answer to your original question, OP, is that people choose not to have a fortnight’s groceries in because they are not selfish, greedy pigs but generous and sensitive souls.

Because they are selfless angels, when they have to self-isolate, there will be an army of friends and acquaintances risking their own health to shop for their wonderful, ill-prepared friends. However long it takes.

Or they will shop for themselves, protected from transmitting the virus by their Aura of Virtue.

ghostee · 04/10/2020 22:43

@Poppinjay that's exactly my point, thank you!

StanfordPines · 04/10/2020 22:44

@QueenOllie

I've always had extra in. So when I open a tub of peanut butter, I buy a new one. If the baked beans I like are on offer, I buy them. It saves me a) running out and b) buying stuff I use all the time/like at higher price. Even if I don't need beans, if they're £1 cheaper it makes more sense to buy them now than wait until they run out and buy them at normal price

Lockdown was horrific, I was shielding and couldn't get a food shop for a month. Thankfully the council dropped some fresh stuff off and I lived off the freezer/cupboards. It's not changed the way I shop except I always have extra UHT milk in now

Exactly. I can’t imagine getting to the end of a packet and then thinking I’ll buy another. Finish the packet, get the next one out of the cupboard and add it to that weeks order.
Poppinjay · 04/10/2020 22:45

that's exactly my point, thank you!

So glad you found your boundary definitions Grin

HollywoodHandshake · 04/10/2020 22:45

@AgeLikeWine

I can afford to buy as many groceries as I want, but I am a responsible member of society so I refuse to stockpile at the expense of those who can’t afford to do so.

It is not compulsory to be a selfish, inconsiderate prick.

one of the people who could easily have had a few days supply but who CHOOSE to go, increase the queues and the crowds, and take food needed by those who can't afford buy extra at the time they need it, or CHOOSE to go shopping when they are full of germs and bugs?

Selfish and inconsiderate indeed Grin

@EinsteinaGogo

Is there genuinely ANYONE who could afford to get a couple of weeks shopping into the house, who hasn't?

And if so, WHY?

Because i managed fine last time there was a lockdown and Don't expect things to ever get as bad as they were then??
SparklyShoesandTutus · 04/10/2020 22:48

Yes I could but no I havent. There is no need to. The shops and warehouses are pretty well stocked. If I buy extra this week it means ot won't be available for others. No one is going to starve. The shops have plans for this. I can't promise o won't stock a bit extra at the end of the year as Brexit will cause far more shopping chaos than covid

I accidentally double ordered bog roll the week before the Great Bogroll Panic and was able to feel smug throughout. Unless my accidental double click started the shortage and panic, in which case sorry everyone.

Heyahun · 04/10/2020 22:50

No couldn’t be fucked - literally never went without even at the height Of lockdown back in March / April! Shops always get restocked so no need to stock up

lyralalala · 04/10/2020 22:51

I know that a lot of preppers (me included) have replenished their stores from catering suppliers.

Normally they wouldn't come close to matching supermarkets or Costco in price, or not for sale to the public at all, but had had to to have some income.

It's meant we've continued avoiding the supermarket for anything other than the basics.

saywha · 04/10/2020 22:53

I don't have a freezer so don't have two weeks of fresh food in the house. I could survive for a few days on what I have right now. I can easily go to local shops or get a delivery so I don't feel the need to have a big stockpile. If I had to self-isolate I think it would be a big week for Deliveroo!
Even in April my nearest supermarkets didn't have more than 3 or 4 people queueing, think it's more of an issue at bigger stores.

StanfordPines · 04/10/2020 22:54

If I buy extra this week it means ot won't be available for others.

Unless you are planning on buying the entire supply of something this is simply not true.

LangClegsInSpace · 04/10/2020 22:54
@LangClegsInSpace so people who didn't do it a year ago and started this month or in the Summer are?
Better off because some of us did it earlier and so didn't affect supply chains.

There was plenty of stuff available in the summer, nobody who stocked up then will have caused a problem.

The problem is caused by people who have the money and space to put a bit aside, but who wait for the 'OMG there's no bogroll or pasta!!!' warnings before they do anything.

That's who the OP is talking about.

MillieEpple · 04/10/2020 22:57

@Butterfly3105 - i have enough food that if i have to isolate for 2 weeks and couldn't get a delivery slot i would cobble together a diet of some sort or if it snows and i cant get to the shops for 3 days we have enough food to eat normally; or if i just have period pains i dont have to go shopping anyway because the cupboard is empty. I've always done this. I dont buy one tin of beans, one tin of tuna and 1 potato - i grab a multipack of 4 beans, or a whole bag of potatoes. I've never bought 400g of pasta because thats 1 meal for our family, i grab a kilo bag. I have things like frozen peas and sweetcorn in the freezer.

ghostee · 04/10/2020 22:59

@HollywoodHandshake 🤣

thegreylady · 04/10/2020 22:59

I could afford it but I don’t see the point. I’d rather shop as I need to. Panic buying is what creates shortages not shortages making it necessary to panic buy.

QueenOllie · 04/10/2020 22:59

I mean do people generally just have cupboards with say a tin of beans or one packet of cereal?
I've just done a shop so my cupboards look like this. Could apologise for the mess but I'm not going to Grin as I know where everything is
Sunbites crisps were £1 hence having two packs

LolaSmiles · 04/10/2020 23:02

You're right.
I don't normally buy tofu. This week I bought two packs just in case I screwed up the cooking. Based on some responses here I must be totally responsible for the great tofu shortage of October 2020 for having a spare pack that I will eat at a later date.
I've also got some nice chili oils and garlic oils a few months ago when they were on offer rather than paying full price. When the news is showing people devestated that they can't get chilli oil, I'll take full responsibility for preventing vulnerable pensioners getting chilli oil 6 months after I bought it.

Rudolphian · 04/10/2020 23:02
@Rudolphian - this is genuine curiosity, but if track and trace phone you in the morning or a member of your household goes down ill overnight - whats the plan for the next 14 days?
Well I've already got food in for a few days.
We get our shopping delivered weekly. The slots are already booked.
If we were stuck I've got family who could get us the essentials if needed.

Janevaljane · 04/10/2020 23:04

I could afford to but haven't and won't. I'm still eating bloody tins I bought in the last lockdown. I shopped once a week last time and fed a family of 5 well. If they've run out of something I want, I'll just buy something else. Lots of local food producers did deliveries anyway.

Bernardstolemywatch · 04/10/2020 23:05

I could but haven’t. I can just go to the supermarket next week as easily as I can this week.
