Is there genuinely ANYONE who could afford to get a couple of weeks shopping into the house, who hasn't?

And if so, WHY?

I could afford to but haven’t because I’m not an arsehole who hoards resources at the expense of those who don’t have the luxury of driving to big supermarkets and spending £££ on a few weeks’ worth of shopping.

womanaf · 04/10/2020 19:07

Because the shops aren’t the same as they were in March, when I had pre-prepared.

AlCalavicci · 04/10/2020 19:10

I could afford it but I dont , if everyone bought a few weeks / a months worth that could do there would be a lot less available for them that can only buy a weeks stock at a time .
I rotate my shopping as carefully as I can so there is one or two big/ expensive things each week that does not need replacing weekly ( soap powder and cat litter this week )

PinkiOcelot · 04/10/2020 19:10

I suppose I could afford to. I haven’t because I think it’s totally unnecessary and caused havoc last time. If people are sensible, there’s plenty for everyone.

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 04/10/2020 19:12

No haven't done that. Life as normal-ish (covid going on though)
What have you done OP?

Inextremis · 04/10/2020 19:12

I could afford to, but I don't need to. The shops aren't going anywhere, are they?

muppet1969 · 04/10/2020 19:12

I could afford it, but it’s completely unnecessary and messes it up for everyone else. If we all buy as normal everything will be fine.

VinylDetective · 04/10/2020 19:13

I haven’t but I do throw a couple of extra tins in the trolley every now and then.

Lockheart · 04/10/2020 19:14

Because I live in a house share. One cupboard and one freezer drawer do not accommodate a two-week shop.

Namechanger20183110 · 04/10/2020 19:14

I bought extra last time and I'm still working my way through it. Theres no way I'm getting carried away with the hype this time. it will be fine

hammeringinmyhead · 04/10/2020 19:14

I have a small kitchen. Some extra stuff is in the downstairs loo but I can't go and buy a week's worth plus 2 weeks and fit it in the fridge and freezer. The day I go shopping I have maybe 10 days in.

Curiosity101 · 04/10/2020 19:15

I haven't. Even at the height of the issues back at the beginning of lockdown, there was still plenty of food. Also, DS is now fully weaned so no worry about formula anymore. If DS was still at the age where he needed formula then I'd make sure I had a 2 month supply (but then I did that pre lockdown anyway).

We're fortunate that we don't have any allergies or special dietary requirements in the house so we could just alter our shopping habits if we needed to.

MillieEpple · 04/10/2020 19:15

Its been a revelation to me that so many people go shopping daily. I realised lots of people couldnt afford a lot in one go or no l space to store it. But MN opened eyes that a majortiy of people who have the means and space still just buy one or two days food at a time. I grew up somewhere remote with a weekly bus to the nearest town and we could get snowed in so we always had a good store.

I have a family of 6 and fortunate enough to have enough budget to buy in a buffer.

I truly amazes me that those who can, don't.

CokeEnStock · 04/10/2020 19:15

I've added a few extras each time recently. Mainly worried about local, lockdowns . I wouldn't call it stockpiling but if it means I could mainly avoid shopping for a couple of weeks.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/10/2020 19:15

I could, but as we eat a lots of fresh veg & fruit, I don't think it would work out well here😁 Plus I am not a dick...

I always have couple of tins of things, stuff in freezer etc. If my doors and windows got stuck, I would probably easily survive week. Just a coffee would be a problem atm🤔

JustFrustrated · 04/10/2020 19:15

I could afford to, choose not to.
It's not necessary
Fucks up things for those who can't
Can't be bothered
It's not necessary
Milk et Al don't keep in the fridge and I don't have a chest freezer
I like spontaneity
It's not necessary

Love51 · 04/10/2020 19:16

Why would I? If we have to isolate there are deliveries, if deliveries fail as they did in March there are people in 2 unrelated households who would shop for us without a blink (people we have done bigger favours for, no CFery here!)

TheGrayChapter · 04/10/2020 19:16

Live rurally - generally have enough food for 2/3 weeks. Saves me making the long trips. Always have milk/bread in the freezer.

I haven’t purchased any more than I normally would have.

Supermarkets were well stocked when I went in. They even had plenty of loo roll.

IndecentFeminist · 04/10/2020 19:16

I always have extra in, and have done pre covid, pre Brexit panic etc. It just seemed logical to me not to get down to bare bones before shopping again.

This did mean that when the shops were manic when others were panic buying we didn't really need to go out. 🤷

I've since replenished those stocks.

Coffee is something I ALWAYS have lots of!

Most people on this thread don't understand the difference between stockpiling and panic buying it seems.

Buying a few things as you go along does not mess it up for anyone else, because the shops just order more.

SummerHouse · 04/10/2020 19:18

Why would I? Genuinely don't know why I would. If I had to isolate for 14 days I would just get a delivery. I really don't understand the question. Confused

redastherose · 04/10/2020 19:18

I'm probably the exception as I shop routinely once a month at a large cash n carry for all my non perishable stuff but have been doing that for about 3 years now simply because I hate shopping so it makes sense to me to get all the stuff I can out of the way and just get the perishable stuff each week. I can only do this because I set up shelving in my garage to house it all.

BlackeyedSusan · 04/10/2020 19:19

What if you have to isolate for two weeks? Do you have enough until you get a slot?
