6 months of shite weather

SomeoneStolemySocks · 04/10/2020 17:03

No toddler groups............can't go to the park because the ground is always soaking wet/play equipment waterlogged. Can't afford softplay every week. One of my sons is nearly 2 and I have no idea what I'm going to do with him until the sun shows it's face again next year.

I'm feeling low about the onset of autumn/winter. Trying to entertain a very active little boy at home for 6 months of cold/dark and horrible autumn rain.

Anyone else in the same boat? Ideas?

I realize with hindsight how lucky I was to be able to take my first son to a local toddler group on a Tues morning. It only cost £1 entry, & he loved playing with different toys. Those groups were great, such a shame Covid has finished them off (near me anyway)

You have to invest in wet weather clothing and wrap up warm. It’s a huge shame about indoor activities being cancelled but parks and playgrounds are still accessible with the right gear on.

Nootkah · 04/10/2020 17:08

Invest in good warm waterproofs and wellies.

SomeoneStolemySocks · 04/10/2020 17:14

It has literally rained for the past three days where I am. Non-stop. Heavy, driving rain. What enjoyment can be had in that weather? Wouldn't you just end up miserable and with colds? It's not fun, going out in the pissing rain surely?

This weekend's almost continuous rain is unusual. Even I expect in Manchester.

Invest in wellies I agree. Autumn leaves, conkers and other things in nature are something to introduce to your son, OP.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2020 17:21

It won't carry on raining continuously all winter.
Good waterproofs (big enough for woollies/fleece underneath) and wellies (with room for thick socks). For both of you!

waitforitwaitforit · 04/10/2020 17:23

I do always try to wrap up and go out in the rain but the blustery, driving rain we have here is just unpleasant for everyone. Your face is soaked, your hands are soaked, you've the fear of a car drenching you as it's goes past. It's rarely like it is in films - splashing in puddles together through the pitter latter of raindrops. It's just miserable.

I'm in Scotland so we don't even have soft play.

MarcelineMissouri · 04/10/2020 17:23

I don’t have toddlers any more but I feel your pain over the weather. It’s all very well people saying just dress for it and go out but as a family we do not enjoy rain!! Cold weather is fine, but rain is rubbish and miserable to be out in.

SnaccidentsHappen · 04/10/2020 17:26

Good waterproofs, you don't catch a cold by getting wet or cold

bushtailadventures · 04/10/2020 17:27

Wellies and a puddle suit, seemed to work for dgd. Our back garden is flooded today and she's been out twice in her wellies having a splash/doing her Peppa Pig impression. We had to empty her wellies a couple of times but she had fun, even if I didn't.

ivftake1 · 04/10/2020 17:27

We've been out all weekend puddle jumping in puddle suits abs wellies

zoomiecraziness · 04/10/2020 17:27

Lidl have some nice waterproofs in at the minute at a very good price

mallorytower · 04/10/2020 17:28

its really shit. I feel for you

Freddiefox · 04/10/2020 17:29

I’d rather cold over rain every day... are you on a low income and could get feet funding for nursery for a few hours a week. Might break the week up a bit.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2020 17:30

No, of course you don't have to go out while it's actually pissing down, but if you pay attention to the weather forecast and observe what it's actually doing, there's usually a break somewhere in the day. I know there's some grim weather in parts of the country at the moment, but it's not forever.

nosswith · 04/10/2020 17:30

The bit I don't like about winter is early darkness. Clocks would be on BST all year around if it was my choice.

tammy909 · 04/10/2020 17:31

You’ve got to be joking?

We’ve had heatwave after heatwave since March. It’s been horrifically unpleasant. Far too hot and far too humid. Thank god for the rain and the cooler temperatures. After the awful summer, long may it last!

Eckhart · 04/10/2020 17:33

3 days rain doesn't mean '6 months of shite weather'.

Puddle jumping is great fun, as is crunchy icy grass and frozen puddles. The weather's due to improve. It's not all doom and gloom and sitting round feeling bored. Not if you don't want it to be.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2020 17:34

Is it feasible for you to get up and go to bed an hour earlier (ie effectively stay on bst) if you want?
EezyOozy · 04/10/2020 17:35

I'd highly recommend a tuff tray!

Essex16 · 04/10/2020 17:35

I think my DD loves going out in the rain more! Waterproofs and wellies on and off she goes. Puddles, playgrounds, the woods she loves it all. Don’t waste your life waiting for summer!

Monsterjam · 04/10/2020 17:35

We spent hrs outside today in the rain, kids in waterproof trousers, coats and wellies, we picked up every bloody conker in a 2 mile radius of my house (great!!) and they didn’t care a jot about the rain! I only took them out as we have dogs to walk and would rather have been inside, but honestly didn’t bother them at all.

Sh05 · 04/10/2020 17:36

Which part of the country are you in? In the north west it's been surprisingly good since lockdown began in march. The odd week of rain is normal really otherwise we'd all be complaining about hose pipe bans and no paddling pools.
I hate the rain but kids love going out splashing in puddles so rain coats and wellies it is! ( Even if it means buying new stuff every October)!

EvilPea · 04/10/2020 17:36

Thermals, Wet jumpsuits and wellies.
Your toddler will have the best time.
Short bursts are fun, and plastic bags kept in the car to strip straight into.
Stop off for the occasional hot chocolate.

They were our best days

Bookaholic73 · 04/10/2020 17:38

A lot of it is mindset.
If it’s pouring with rain, go puddle jumping. Find a stream and play pooh-sticks. There are lots of outside activities to do in wet weather.

Loads of indoor activities too. Get out your old blankets and make a den. Lay out a blanket and have a picnic, play hide and seek, play dress up.

Monsterjam · 04/10/2020 17:38

Ps I recommend the muddy puddles website x
