I'm single, never get invited anywhere by friends, so I thought what the hell!

Would it look weird?

I always did when away with work - and I'm not working now, DH is WFH, DD will be in school and I'm free all day Thursday so I'm planning on doing it then!

First time out - apart from bloody Morrisons, the doctors and the pharmacy since 28th March.

I am salivating. Only problem is I can't decide where to go!

Cynara · 04/10/2020 14:44

This thread has reminded me how much I enjoy dinner in a restaurant on my own! I used to do it regularly when I worked away from home and loved it, but haven't done much work away since the Covid stuff happened.... Try it OP, it's great. Take a book or a newspaper so you've got some ready-made entertainment between courses. I usually find that I end up chatting to far more random people when I'm alone than I would if I was with someone, and that's nice sometimes.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 04/10/2020 14:46

@cheesecadet

Do you know what? That sounds blimmin’ glorious. I’m fantasising now about a country walk on a cold, but sunny day followed by a pub lunch beside a roaring fire.

I go for coffees alone and to the cinema. I love the headspace.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/10/2020 14:48
**@SchrodingersImmigrant* it depends if the OP @cheesecadet* is a man or a woman?!
Firstly, this would look just delightful on everyone, even a donkey.😁
Secondly, in my experience it's women worrying about things like eating alone. I have served very many men eating alone in my times in hospitality, women did it much less. So, yes, I made sex assumption. But you have a point, I could be wrongBlush

cheesecadet · 04/10/2020 14:49

Fabulous - it's all booked for later! Thanks.

I'm a woman, by the way!

I love doing this. I have less family commitments than most of my friends so I can be more spontaneous. Sometimes at 6pm I'll decide I fancy dinner out and just go on my own rather than trying to chase round and find a free friend. I also like people watching and it's easier to do that when you dont have to engage in conversation with someone else.

I am quite self-conscious sometimes so I go to places where I'm highly unlikely to run into anyone I know. I dont care what strangers think about me eating alone but I wouldn't want to run into a work colleague incase they thought I was weird.

SimonJT · 04/10/2020 14:54

Do it, its great. I don’t work Fridays, when I was single I ate lunch out everyday Friday. Choosing where I went, talking to absolutely no one was bliss.

soupmaker · 04/10/2020 14:56

I absolutely love having a meal out on my own. Used to do it when working away as often as I could. Dinner with a glass of wine, book or magazine, bloody bliss.

iklboo · 04/10/2020 14:57

I go for brunch or lunch by myself quite a bit. I have every other Friday off so wander down into town, have some lovely food and maybe a glass of wine, read my kindle. It's great.

timeforawine · 04/10/2020 14:57

I'm married and I've done it, i take my kindle and enjoy the peace

Poulter · 04/10/2020 14:59

I do this. I love it. I'm not single but I love me time sometimes. I even have hotel mini breaks on my own. I always take a book or a newspaper though to read between courses.

1forAll74 · 04/10/2020 15:04

It's fine to do this, I am a loner type, and have eaten out alone at times.
It always makes me laugh when I watch the Shirley Valentine film, and she want's to sit alone in that restaurant, but some crass people then insist that she joins them, and she is not amused at their naff ways.

HowFastIsTooFast · 04/10/2020 15:06

Go for it OP! When I was single I'd go out to eat / to the cinema / theatre on my own all the time. I got used it initially through travelling for work on my own and refusing to dine in another dull hotel restaurant when there was an amazing city outside.

It was a bit nerve wracking at first but I soon realised that literally nobody cares (how much time do you spend analysing the other diners when you're having dinner??) and even if anyone did raise an eyebrow I'll never see them again so why would I care?

I always have a book or a magazine to pass the time but rarely actually read much, I just enjoy the food and revel in having someone bring it to me!

sammylady37 · 04/10/2020 15:10

I do this all the time! Or at least I did pre-covid. I holiday abroad alone, go for short breaks alone, eat out alone, go to the cinema on my own etc.

81Byerley · 04/10/2020 15:10

I love eating out on my own, but always with my Kindle!

PhilSwagielka · 04/10/2020 15:11

I've done it plenty of times. I just take something to read with me.

Hangingover · 04/10/2020 15:15

I love this. Pizza, soda, podcast, windowseat, bliss!

Gwenhwyfar · 04/10/2020 15:20

I eat out on my own. Has to be the right place though. Pub meal is very easy.

allaglow · 04/10/2020 16:22

I think it sounds lovely: made me think that I should do it more often.
I take a paper or magazine, but might not bother much with it: I like just watching the world go by, and enjoying my own company.
I make lunch on my own part of a city shopping trip; go on the train, so that I can have a glass of wine with my meal.

cheesecadet · 04/10/2020 16:23

I'm here and in a lovely quiet little corner and my waiter is HOT 🔥

It felt a bit strange at first but I've relaxed a bit and enjoying it very much! I really don't think I've done it before. Lovely pub that I came to for my 40th birthday.

To the poster that asked if I was in Manchester, no sorry I'm not. I'm about 35 miles away!
