To think drive through click and collect is marvellous

Boring I know, but due to deliveries all but drying up where I am, tried click and collect from Asda yesterday.
Literally ordered at 12pm, drive up at 3pm - with shopping all bought to car as I arrived. Bloody amazing

i also used it in the early days.

CMOTDibbler · 04/10/2020 11:13

No same day local to me, but I've done Tesco click and collect and it was brilliant - pull into one of their spaces, they ask your name, and you open your boot and they put it in. Very distanced and efficient

HilaryBriss · 04/10/2020 11:17

I love it, had never used it prior to lockdown but I am a convert and use it every week now! Tesco though, not Asda for me due to Tesco being closest.

olderthanyouthink · 04/10/2020 11:17

Years ago I used Asda's click and collect on my scooter (the motorcycle kind boy children's toy!) very amusing the see their confusion. Wouldn't be distanced now I guess though my helmet was a full face one

Flipflophurray · 04/10/2020 11:21

@olderthanyouthink blimey how did you balance it?

If quarantined then you could order and ask a friend or neighbour to collect it if you could not get a delivery. Then you would have chosen and paid for the food, it seems slightly less of an imposition than asking them to go into a shop and do a full shop and repaying them.

olderthanyouthink · 04/10/2020 11:24

@Flipflophurray I wasn't picking up a weekly shop for a family! Just a few bits (including clothes), though I could pick up a fair bit between the box on the back, the under seat storage and a bag between my feet.

Flipflophurray · 04/10/2020 11:26

@olderthanyouthink amazing!

Flipflophurray · 04/10/2020 11:27

@HilaryBriss I think I am a convert now too. I’d actually say it was almost better than delivery as the slots were just so easy to get and only £1 rather than about £6-£7 that I pay usually for delivery.

Sparklingbrook · 04/10/2020 11:29

I think it’s brilliant. It’s not designed for people without a suitable vehicle.Grin Any way of avoiding having to go into a shop full of people is to be commended at the moment.

KarenCaron · 04/10/2020 11:35

What about those who do not have a car, some for medical reasons?

What about them?

AliBingo · 04/10/2020 11:36

That sounds amazing!

I did an Asda click and collect at Cribbs Bristol the other day, let them know on the app that I was on my way, and then queued for 45 minutes at the drive through click and collect while a lone woman laboriously brought out all the deliveries one at a time. My order was only about £50 and it probably would have been faster to go into the store!

I can see that when it works, it must be brilliant though.

Flipflophurray · 04/10/2020 11:38

@AliBingo to be honest that was almost what I was expecting - but it Really was about a two minute wait.

YANBU, it's amazing!
I really don't like not being able to choose my own groceries, but for several months at the start of lockdown I didn't want to use supermarkets, so I discovered the joys of click and collect. I get the majority this way, then use the small shop at the top of the road for the kinds of things I like to pick out myself. Perfect!

mogtheexcellent · 04/10/2020 11:39

I love click and collect. I figure its one less person in the supermarket and I keep a delivery slot free for someone who may need it. Win win.

The whataboutery on mumnet appears to be increasing. Hmm Angry

Flipflophurray · 04/10/2020 11:46

@mogtheexcellent it’s almost to the point of parody. I mean you could say the same about actually doing a weekly shop in store - it’s exactly the same issue if you don’t have a car.

It sounds good, not like here. I used it once the food was in key coded cabinets. There where three for your order. There was a code to put in to open the doors. I found one of the doors, there were dozens. It wouldn’t open, apparently you need to do them in the right order. Then you have a certain amount of time to get to the second door, which is no where near the first. The food isn’t in bags so need a trolley, there are none. I seriously expected Jeremy Beadle to pop up. I am dyslexic so that didn’t make it easier. Never again.

Chocolatecake12 · 04/10/2020 11:50

I sat in bed this morning with a cup of tea organising my Asda click and collect got Wednesday - so much better than actually spending time in the shop! They even email on the day to tell you if you have any substitutes and what they are! - Tesco don’t do this. I’m loving it! And being able to Keep a running total of the cost keeps me on a budget. Smile

gottastopeatingchocolate · 04/10/2020 11:51

I was doing Asda click and collect early in the "current situation", but I found the number of substitutes off-putting, especially as what they substituted was often quite random! The "lucky dip" novelty soon wore off!! But it sounds like it was a great experience for you!

rorosemary · 04/10/2020 11:57

I've been using the service since the start of the pandemic because I am very vulnerable and advised to cut down on all unnecessary contacts (not in UK so no shielding letter where I live). I love it! It saves me a lot of time and hassle. I think I'll keep doing this once the pandemic is over. I don't have to wait long either, mostly no waiting, sometimes a few minutes. Once it was 30 minutes due to the delivery trucks door being stuck or faulty, but those things can happen.

Flipflophurray · 04/10/2020 11:58

@gottastopeatingchocolate to be fair I think this is an issue with delivery as well - while I’ve heard of some hilarious substitutes I once had curry leaves substituted with a chicken tikka Masala ready meal 😊

OP posts:
GetUpAgain · 04/10/2020 11:59

I prefer it to getting a delivery as I don't always have a whole hour spare to wait in for a delivery, usually because the DC need lifts to activities, but I can collect from nearby shop when it suits me i.e. in between dropping and fetching children.

Sunshine1235 · 04/10/2020 12:04

I tried a couple of times at Asda and had issues where I was just waiting outside for ages with no one coming and ended up having to go in to find someone which kind of defeated the point as had young kids in the car so had to take them in with me.

I couldn’t get a delivery slot this week though so have opted for Sainsbury’s click and collect so hoping theirs is a bit better

gingercat02 · 04/10/2020 12:10

I have had deliveries for years but swapped to C&C when deliveries dried up. So easy. Call in on the way home from work (so no extra miles) free (no £30 delivery pass). Never going back to delivery again

Rowgtfc72 · 04/10/2020 12:11

Been using tesco click and collect for about five years. Struggling to get slots now as everyone is panicking again. Tesco guy who loaded our boot yesterday said theyve increased the amount of slots and they go just like that.
