Posting for traffic - does anyone play D&D online?

Do you need any equipment to start with and which website do you use to do it?

I've only played table top D&D once in real life, but unfortunately no one I know would be into playing and I'd quite like to give it another go.

Any info, advice etc would be greatly appreciated

I don't have any advice but I'm following with interest. I'm keen to get into online gaming, I've barely played since DS & DD were born.

I also really want to get into LARPing when big gepup events are allowed again(don't laugh! Grin) It's something I've always been curious about, but was never brave enough to try. I'm a 33yo single parent now & just think "Fuck it, why not."

what does "posting for traffic" mean?
twice ive seen it tonight...

Dodgydreamer · 02/10/2020 22:25

I'd so be up for LARP-ing too Grin couldn't afford to make a very good costume though ha ha!

@CyberNan - AIBU tends to get a lot more people reading and replying than other areas of mumsnet, more traffic if you will so posting for traffic just means posting in a busy area where there's more chance of a response.

Well PregoFeminist86 & Leaannb if no one comes back to us, we could just start our own D&D club and make it up as we went along ha ha!

DS1 and partner use Tabletop Simulator for DnD amongst other games. There's a community, forums etc. Try the Steam website. There are costs involved though. As for LARPing, try Profound Decisions - they run many of the big events. Costumes don't have to be complex - though some are amazing!

PreggoFeminist86 · 02/10/2020 22:58

Haha I am DEFINITELY up for being a founding member of the Mumsnet D&D Guild Grin

I've joined a couple of Facebook groups for the LARP stuff. All of the big events have been cancelled for obvious reasons, so I'm thinking of trying an online LARP soon (if my 1 & 3 year old will ever bloody allow me more than an hour of time to myself!)

I'm game. Have you looked online at DND online? Thats what my husband recommended
haba · 02/10/2020 23:13

Ooh, I had no idea you could play it online. My children are desperate to play, but I don't have time to GM!

Dodgydreamer · 02/10/2020 23:20

@Leaannb I haven't no, I really don't have a scooby what I'm doing ha ha! I'll go for a look tomorrow though so say thanks for me!

@PreggoFeminist86 you could be our very first MN Dungeonmaster Grin

@toconclude I've got steam and a few quid spare a month so as long as it's not too expensive that would be fine. I live in the back end of nowhere so there's just no LARP events on around here sadly.

Just saying

CoRhona · 02/10/2020 23:44

DS1 (18) plays this, he has Steam. He has a group of mates who play, they used to all get together.

JuiceyBetty · 02/10/2020 23:49

I’ve never played before but always wanted to. So following with interest!

haba · 02/10/2020 23:49

Thank you!

Kpo58 · 03/10/2020 00:04

D&D beyond is meant to be a good site for D&Ding.

Some people also find Roll 20 good.

In both you can buy the books with some kind of integration. Also there is a way for 1 person to own the books and share them with others playing in the same session.

CourageCallsToCourage · 03/10/2020 00:09

I've been playing online with a group of my local friends during lockdown - we got a few in-person games in but we're back to online now. We use DnD Beyond for character sheets and Roll 20 for the actual play, with Discord for the voice & video chat. It works pretty well. I'm sure there are also D&D groups online that you could join, if that's what you mean, using similar tools. I'm not sure where you'd go to find others who wanted to start a game though.

Dodgydreamer · 03/10/2020 00:10

Just had a quick google before bed and D&D online looks really good and the Roll20 website looks promising for more old school table top style games.

I'm going to have a proper look tomorrow but I'm quite taken by the looks of Roll20, if only I knew what I was doing I'd love invite you all to join a party and we could all get questing!

That would be very cool Leannb, thanks!

I'll check in tomorrow when I'm not half asleep and we'll see what we can figure out - excited about MN D&D Grin

Role 20 is the most common one that I know of.

During lock down me and some friends created our own discord server and played via discord voice chat using virtual dice and character sheets.

I'd love to join the mumsnet nerd guild =D

ChorltonWheelie · 03/10/2020 05:35

Since the start of the pandemic we have played online using Discord to handle voice and sending of maps / positions and DnDBeyond to cover character sheets etc.

Its worked well for us and we actually get to play more as we are all geographically dispersed so would normally only play once a month.

We tried Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds but found the Discord solution worked best for us

BiblioX · 03/10/2020 06:28

My daughter always uses (and recommends) Discord for online DND.
I’ve only ever played tabletop and only with family, but adore DnD. Mumsnet DnD would make me be brave and try online lol.

Roundles · 03/10/2020 10:03

Sign me up! Roll 20 and discord are my recommendations but I've never actually played online. Would love to join a group though!

what does "posting for traffic" mean? Posting in AIBU rather than in a more appropriate topic because AIBU gets far more posters and you will get more replies to your post.
