To be glad COVID got me out of going to the hairdressers?

I somehow got locked into a cycle of seeing the hairdresser for bobbed hair that seemed to get shorter every time.

Wanted to quit going but didn't know how to stop. Now I need never go back. I hate going to salons for any reason.

I used to cut my own hair. Now going to get DH to do it. I fancy having it longer and I can't really afford hairdressing anyway.

It's the only good thing about it for me as I am a shielder so I l know the whole pandemic is horrendous in every other way.

I’ve stopped going and DH and I are doing each other’s. My hair is a bit longer than bra strap length and I used to go every 3 or 4 months for a trim and either pop in for a fringe trim or do it myself/get DH to do it. DH was going every two months so we’re saving money already and I’m sure a professional would know but we’re happy with our results. I already had good hair scissors and we got a set of clippers for the cost of one of his trips to the barber.

That's great to hear!

I would love hair your length!

Going to order some scissors - as you say they will pay for themselves in no time.

Must get hub watching some videos before I let him loose on my mop Grin

I got the scissors years ago off amazon, they were about £7 I think. Kept immaculately.

It’s very thick and needs layers so I avoid triangle head so I looked for stuff on YouTube for cutting hair like mine and went from there. I could do it myself but easier for someone else to!

If it goes wrong you could go to a different salon for a fix but go a little at a time and you’ll be fine.

TroysMammy · 02/10/2020 20:37

I haven't had my hair cut for just over a year. It is down to my bra strap and straight. I've got two reasons for not having it cut

  1. because I begrudge paying £30 to have a trim and
  2. because I'm lazy.
omega3 · 02/10/2020 20:49

I've been cutting mine at home pre-covid, albeit with the household scissors! Shock

Any recommendations for good hairdressing scissors?

Toothsil · 02/10/2020 20:50

DH has stopped going to the barbers because he prefers the way I did his during lockdown. The first time my mum saw him after lockdown she said what a nice haircut he had 😂 The barber used to make a proper mess of it and I never thought I could do it until I had no choice and discovered I could! I think I'll try doing DD's as well when she needs a trim.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/10/2020 20:55

Mine aren’t available anymore but they’re like these

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CP3EA5G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ov4DFb1D2W9TZ?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I got them 8 years ago and they’re as good as new.

omega3 · 02/10/2020 23:09

Thanks, @AnneLovesGilbert.

What's the sticky out bit on the scissors for? Confused

Ponoka7 · 02/10/2020 23:17

@omega3, it's a finger rest.

nevermorelenore · 02/10/2020 23:26

I went for a pre lockdown haircut to get a good chop because it was quite neglected. But I'll probably trim myself for a while. I do the front ponytail trick and it comes out fine. It's not like people sit staring at the back checking whether it's even. It's even enough for me!

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/10/2020 23:32

I don’t have a finger rest in mine, they’re basic but great.

MrsBobDylan · 03/10/2020 07:39

Me too! I'm cutting and colouring my own hair so saving around £90-100 every 2-3 months.

I am lucky because I have very curly hair which is very forgiving as I'm no hair dresser.

I have wanted a fringe for years but no one would ever cut me one because of the curls but now I have one.

I look a bit like Side Show Bob some days but I love being able to finally wear my hair 'big'.

I also started my own business in lockdown which I'd never had the time/ confidence to do before. Two of my kids have disabilities and I had to leave my job 2 years ago because I was bullied out due to my caring responsibilities. Well fuck 'em because now I manage my own work without all the corporate bullshit and have big crazy hair that I love Grin

Pipandmum · 03/10/2020 07:45

I love going to the hairdresser! I colour it myself and only go every three months but I enjoy the experience - I love the head massage I get when they condition it, the catch up chat with the hair dresser, the transformation from my untidy mop to a shapely style. An hour of me time. Well worth the £50!

rookiemere · 03/10/2020 07:48

I have to get mine cut and thinned at the hairdressers as it's so thick. But during lockdown I started using semi permanent hair colour to hide the roots from my highlights and actually the hairdresser agreed that it suits me better than highlights so I'm saving 2 hrs at the hairdressers and about £50.

dudsville · 03/10/2020 07:49

I stopped going to the hair dresser nearly 3 years ago. I hadnt enjoyed it fur so long never liked the outcome, tried the best salons in my city. I presume I was never able communicate what I wanted. My last wonderful hair dresser was a good 15 years ago, i had to stop seeing him because of funds and then once i got my financial footing back the salon had moved to london. I was so annoyed with my last hair cut that I gave it a go myself and haven't looked back.

user1494055864 · 03/10/2020 08:33

I've been once for a trim since they re- opened, but I haven't had it coloured since February, so it has a bit of a balayage look to it, which I love. I haven't gone as grey as I thought I would, I literally only have a few strands, which could be mistaken for highlights, so I'm going to hold off colouring for as long as I can. I think a lot of people have realised they don't actually need to go as often as they were, I think you fall into a trap of pre-booking your next appointment while you are there, but if you can get past those first few weeks of root regrowth, it suddenly starts to not look too bad.

Alternista · 03/10/2020 08:54

Front ponytail cut with amazon scissors and box dye colour here and I’ve never had so many compliments! Finally have the long swishy layers with slight balayage look I’ve wanted for years but that my local hairdressers seemed incapable of giving me.

hatesalons · 03/10/2020 11:19

Found one of those combs that grip the hair to make it easier to cut straight. Now to find a video for Dh to follow Smile

My hair is very fine but used to have a lot of it. Now it is fine AND thin - menopause, steroids, etc. It shouldn't take a lot of cutting. Hairdressers seem hell bent on putting layers into thin fine hair which doesn't really work - at least for me.

dontdisturbmenow · 03/10/2020 11:37

Same here. They seemed to increase the price every 3 months to do a worse job each time and I was thinking of looking somewhere cheaper but didn't know where. I thought I had no choice as need to colour every 6 weeks to cover the white but had a terrible experience before doing it myself and vowed to never do so again.

Had no choice though and didn't care as not seeing anyone and realised that going for a shade lighter, it looked just about as good as going to the salon.

I've now done 3 colours and they've all turned good and went once to a new much cheaper hairdresser that did a much better job than the other.

Deux · 03/10/2020 11:41

Well I’d been trying to grow my hair beyond my chin for eons with no success. Thanks to lockdown I went 6 months between hairdresser visits.

It’s now just below my shoulders and I’m thrilled. Grin

TweetUsOnFacebook · 03/10/2020 11:49

I coloured my hair with superdrug own brand colour during lockdown. It came out so good that I'm doing it myself from now on. It's £10 for 3 boxes versus £120 at my hairdresser (inc a trim and style).

The mumsnet haircut works well on long hair. I wouldn't attempt it on very short hair. It gives nice even layers.

Chickychickydodah · 03/10/2020 12:02

I dye my own hair and cut mine and hubby’s all the time, my hair was just below my bra line and it is all the same length and thin. Previously I went to the hairdressers and she cut it in a straight line twice took less than 10 mins and charged me £25.
Now I won’t enter a hairdressers😡

hatesalons · 03/10/2020 12:08

I've been colouring mine with henna at home for years so I just have to get home cuts and that's me all DIY!
