To be glad COVID got me out of going to the hairdressers?

I somehow got locked into a cycle of seeing the hairdresser for bobbed hair that seemed to get shorter every time.

Wanted to quit going but didn't know how to stop. Now I need never go back. I hate going to salons for any reason.

I used to cut my own hair. Now going to get DH to do it. I fancy having it longer and I can't really afford hairdressing anyway.

@Deux

Well I’d been trying to grow my hair beyond my chin for eons with no success. Thanks to lockdown I went 6 months between hairdresser visits.

It’s now just below my shoulders and I’m thrilled. Grin

Grin it's great when you get the hair you want AND don't have to pay for it!

It's my silver lining too op.

I stopped dyeing my hair years ago and it's now mostly white. I'm very lucky because it's a really lovely silver white with no yellow tones at all. I know that sounds vain, but it's just down to lucky genes.

However because of my age I always had it cut really short because I thought anything else would be "old lady" territory. Haven't had it cut since lockdown and I've really started to like it longer. It's a softer look with natural curl and I much prefer it.

Another upside is that I won't need to go to the hairdresser nearly as often when this is all over, so will save money too.

Your hair sounds beautiful Smilemine is very silvery white except for the back where it is 50% brown I cannot wait till it all goes white! I may well stop dyeing it all together it is just that I may look like a badger until I go all white. 🦡🦡🦡🦡🦡

@Alternista

Front ponytail cut with amazon scissors and box dye colour here and I’ve never had so many compliments! Finally have the long swishy layers with slight balayage look I’ve wanted for years but that my local hairdressers seemed incapable of giving me.
Your hair sounds fantastic and all the better that you are doing it yourselfGrin

I've been once for a trim since they re- opened, but I haven't had it coloured since February, so it has a bit of a balayage look to it, which I love. I haven't gone as grey as I thought I would, I literally only have a few strands, which could be mistaken for highlights, so I'm going to hold off colouring for as long as I can. I think a lot of people have realised they don't actually need to go as often as they were, I think you fall into a trap of pre-booking your next appointment while you are there, but if you can get past those first few weeks of root regrowth, it suddenly starts to not look too bad.
Yes I agree and I am terrible at confrontation and even being assertive I just kept rebooking I did not know how to politely decline the next appointment😂

My lockdown hair was truly awful. DD coloured it for me a couple of times during lockdon. It became straggly and strawlike, and nothing I tried improved its condition. I first went back for a post lockdown cut and colour in August, and the difference in apperanace and the way I felt about myself was amazing.

I envy those of you who have the type of hair and type of hairstyle that can be done at home, but mine just looks awful unless professionally done.

TBH I really don't understand people's dislike of going to the hairdresser. I always look better when I have been. I take my kindle and don't chat if I don't feel like it.

ZaraW · 03/10/2020 14:37

I'm overseas and only trust my regular hairdresser as very few salons can cut my frizzy, curly hair well. Borders are closed so I can't travel to her in the next country.

I've cut my own, it doesn't look to bad if you don't look too closely but can't wait to get an appointment with her. I've known her 10 years and we get on really well.

wobblywinelover · 03/10/2020 14:37

I agree I hate going to get my hair done, it's such a chore. Even though my hairdresser is lovely and has been doing my hair for years I feel a sense of loyalty towards her. I get mine trimmed about every 6-8 weeks and coloured about every 3 months. I do think I might lengthen the gap between trims, I loved how long my hair grew through lockdown. My hairdresser, lovely as she is feels the need to chop a little too much and straightens my hair to within an inch of it's life so it's slippy and slinky, when really I prefer it to be fuller and thicker. I'm a wimp though so I don't say anything to hurt her feelings.

Even she said that bookings have dropped off since lockdown, particularly for the beauty side of her business. People have realised they don't really need these things as much. Sad for her though.

@MrsBobDylan Your post made me to a big grin! Grin

userxx · 03/10/2020 17:57

Hairdressers are suffering at the moment, I feel so sorry for the industry. I'll keep going to support as best I can and also I can only imagine what I'd look like with a home cut 🙈

hatesalons · 03/10/2020 19:37

@MrsBobDylan

Me too! I'm cutting and colouring my own hair so saving around £90-100 every 2-3 months.

I am lucky because I have very curly hair which is very forgiving as I'm no hair dresser.

I have wanted a fringe for years but no one would ever cut me one because of the curls but now I have one.

I look a bit like Side Show Bob some days but I love being able to finally wear my hair 'big'.

I also started my own business in lockdown which I'd never had the time/ confidence to do before. Two of my kids have disabilities and I had to leave my job 2 years ago because I was bullied out due to my caring responsibilities. Well fuck 'em because now I manage my own work without all the corporate bullshit and have big crazy hair that I love Grin

That brought a big smile to my face and you have great taste in musicGrin go you!!!

I was cutting my own hair pre-covid, I like doing it myself. Saves cost, saves booking and having to go somewhere to get it done, can choose to trim it when I want to. I also colour my own hair, saves masses of money. If you make a mistake, hair just grows back....and you'll get so that you don't make mistakes after a while.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 03/10/2020 20:58

@Ginfordinner same here. I have my hair coloured in a way that I daren’t touch it myself. Last time I home dyed my hair i ended up having to have it fixed at the hairdresser so just leave it to the professionals now. It’s my one luxury

Ginfordinner · 03/10/2020 22:06

I'm too short sighted to colour my hair myself, and as I have short, layered hair cutting it myself is not an option.

Iola4 · 03/10/2020 22:19

O gosh I have used henna and indigo since I was 23, I started to notice white when I hit 16 but just used to pluck those ones...ouch! I've always cut my own hair, since I had a bad experience at a hairdresser's when I was 14, butchered my hair!
I just got fed of using henna and then the indigo so when lockdown hit thought just go bloody white! Obviously it'll take a while, my hair is in the middle of my back, but I cannot be arsed to go through the faff any longer, plus the mess! I'll be 40 in a few yrs time, and I will be cliché but I feel bloody liberated!

Yes it's the admin and travel and hassle too. I just can't be bothered any moreSmile

I think a lot of people have realised they can live without getting their hair done, or will get it done less regularly. My friend who is a stylist is very worried about the lack of clients, after the initial rush, work has now dropped off again, the beauty side of her salon is even quieter. I think next year we will see many closures. It's sad.

Ginfordinner · 04/10/2020 17:09

It's made me realise that not getting my hair done is not an option. Short layered hair is not a good look when it is growing out and has an inch wide grey parting.

omega3 · 05/10/2020 02:52

Thanks @Ponoka7. Smile

crankysaurus · 05/10/2020 04:23

I could never find the time with work (lots of travel) and kids before Covid and desperately needed a cut when lockdown happened. There was a link I saw for a straight one length cut and I decided sod it, who's going to see? Have done it twice now and thinking of another cut, and not planning on the hairdresser's any time soon (which will be little loss of income as I could never fit it in anyway). Happy all round, not least as it suits me far more than layers. And yes too hairdressing scissors, definitely worth the investment, I think I got mine from Boots.
