Lack of NHS services in certain areas (TMI warning)

AIBU?

I sort of know IAMU but un the same breath this is my reality and I just don't know how I go on like this. I know the NHS is amazing, I used to be a nurse before I had children. I think the NHS is amazing but I can't help but feel frustrated at the massive differences across the country.

I have been bleeding since August 3rd after passing a very very large clot. Prior to this I had been experiencing increased discharge, weird spotting and my periods had suddenly become very irregular. I have not stopped bleeding since August 3rd. I now struggle to leave the house as I bleed though the maximum protection available to me. Two GPs have stated to me that I need to be seen urgently for both a scan and a Gyn appointment, in total those two GPs have sent or updated up referrals 7 times. First urgent scan referral was sent on August 3rd which radiology rejected as NOT URGENT. The GP resent that in middle of August.

September 1st GP referred me to Gynaecology as a urgent “2 week referral”. The GP confirmed hospital has accepted this as urgent however the letter I received indicated that it would be a much longer wait as I mentioned informing them of dates in the next 6 months I was unavailable. I know the GP again asked them to see me ASAP on 28/09/2020.

I got hold of appointments today, who were very sympathetic but said I was accepted as urgent but I wouldn’t be contacted until at least March, that urgent appointments are taking 28 weeks currently. Even then it would just be a telephone appointment as they weren’t seeing patients or doing procedures.

I did receive a letter from radiology with an appointment for 19/10/2020 but this will be 10 weeks since I was referred. If I don’t stop bleeding by then it will be 78 days of bleeding.

I am in pain, my children are really scared and confused after seeing me with blood running down my legs on numerous occasions, I am becoming increasingly desperate and depressed. I have not stopped bleeding for a single day, the thought of any day longer is making me very unstable.

I cannot go on like this. I have collapsed twice, I can’t work, I bleed through at the school pick-up which is mortifying for us all, I feel so ill, depressed and afraid at what is happening to my body. It’s having a profound affect in us all as a family, I have children with additional needs and one was excluded this week, he has Autism and learning difficulties, and the fact mummy isn’t as hands on and mummy keeps bleeding has a huge affect when he can’t understand what is happening. Another day this week I took my child to the opticians and I bled though everything and had to call my husband at work to take over while I wrapped my coat around myself and sat in a towel to get home.

I accept and understand this is an unprecedented time and the service is under immense pressure but that doesn’t change my current situation. Why is there such a divide on NHS services? I know that some places are back to a more normal service yet it seems like my area is way behind and that is only going to have a massively determinate affect on waiting lists and future services.

If someone deemed as urgent, like me, needs to wait 28 weeks for a consultation and 10 weeks for a scan, what hope do other non-urgent services have? What am I supposed to do in that time? I can barely function most days, it’s having a huge affect on my mental and physical health.

@Qwertybertie87

I really hope you get this sorted op. My friend was being treated for depression (flung on antidepressants and told to get on with it basically), she knew it wasn't depression and was on her knees with 2 small children to look after. I ended up paying for her to see a private consultant, turned out she had some sort of tumour on a gland in her neck (can't remember the name of it now). Because she got a private consultation the NHS had to pick it up afterwards and she got surgery a few weeks later. She's a different woman now. If she hadnt went private she would still be waiting for the initial consultation, it's an absolute shit show and I refuse to buy into this we must all treat the NHS like its a sacred cow nonsense. Even after her surgery her gp asked her if she still wanted to take anti depressants, she wasnt depressed in the first place!
Scary isn't it!

A friend if mine was 34, had some symptoms of bowel cancer. Was referred for a colonoscopy, told 6 months. Ended up in A &E diagnosed and died before those 6 months. But he was too young to have it.

I think it's probably polps for me, so i can wait but not in this state!

@LyingDogsLie1

I’m so sorry you’re faced with this OP, you’re being totally let down. It’s disgusting. I was admitted to a gynae ward recently for early pregnancy issues and it was absolutely dead. I was on my own on an empty ward for a day and night - I can only assume this is because all the routine stuff wasn’t happening. The ward was fully staffed and I was kept in regular tea and chats as a consequence. Great for me but less so for people like you.
I know! I have friends in wards saying it is empty. Not gyn but other wards. Crazy!

@Mummyoflittledragon

Ok well a consultation is a £180-250. Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest. I have learnt the hard way you get what you pay for. The consultant will have instant access to a scanner unless it’s a specialist job, in which case you’ll have to book for another appointment and pay extra. Idk how much as I was under health insurance but I wouldn’t think it will be as much as £500. An Mri is around £1500. Then there would be a follow up appointment to discuss results. That will cost maybe £50 less than the first.
I called around our local hospital and yes that's the sort of price. But tempted to try this one near Bristol.

Yanbu so sorry OP. The NHS is really crap at the moment unless you have covid.

I know you say you don't have the money, but I would be trying anything to get a private appointment and scan. Credit card if you need to, your health is vital and this could be very serious.

BitGutted · 02/10/2020 20:34

I think you have 2 options

  1. go to A & E and sit there until you get seen and then the on-call gynae will he called down

  2. pay to go private

Covid has affected a lot of NHS services and now there is a huge backlog which is a total nightmare and people are waiting ages to see people, my friend was a 2 week wait suspected cancer she waited 8-9 weeks and thankfully it's not but the lady she saw just said they were very sorry and that the nhs is massively over stretched. She advised her to contact PALS as the more people who report issues hopefully will help things improve.

I hope you get sorted soon tho xx

HubbabubbaT · 02/10/2020 20:36

Can you possibly afford £100 for a private GP consultation? - we have the option at our local Nuffield to book a private GP appointment for £100 (it may have gone up in the last couple of years) and they can often speed you through an emergency referral to the NHS hospital. Somehow a letter from a private GP seems to carry more weight we've found. Only used it a couple of times but it's absolutely brilliant. Also they give you 30 mins to an hr appt rather than 5 mins in and out like an NHS GP. You can do this without having to pay for full medical insurance as a one off.

allhappeningatonce · 02/10/2020 20:37

Please demand norethisterone. It makes you bloated but it will stop the bleeding while you fight to be seen.

cathcath2 · 02/10/2020 20:49

Make sure you tell A&E that the Health Minister said to come! Hopefully, that will make them extra cautious (it usually does)

Lineofconcepcion · 02/10/2020 20:50

What did they say in A & E? Womens health always seems at the bottom of priority.

Lunar567 · 02/10/2020 20:57

This is what our government is doing to the people.
They don't let dentists operate at normal capacity, they don't let doctors operate at normal capacity. Lots of restrictions.
How long will they be making people suffer?
People need to wake up to the awful changes to our health care.
My friend GP told me that they will continue operate with telephone consultation for the future. No plans to go back to seeing people. I despair.

Oohmegooliebird · 02/10/2020 20:58

Goodness don't say that! They'd look at you as if you had two heads. Medics don't tend to hold the health minister in much esteem. Jeremy Hunt was a particular favourite (and yes OP I do know you are in Wales).

I really hope you do get sorted soon. As an NHS worker these stories are so difficult to hear. I'm so relieved that my area hasn't been too impacted by COVID and we can still give decent care.

I was referred under the cancer pathway but they didn't accept it. I am too young apparently.

Thanks, still here. Will be awhile I suspect which is fine, the waiting room hasn't changed much so I suspect a lot of emergencies.

I will pay private but even that is a few weeks away.

It’s unbelievable that GPs are no longer able to determine the speed at which they think their patients should be seen. When I contacted my GP asking for a fast track referral that something was very wrong with my last surgery (recurrent incisional hernia after hysterectomy of greatly swollen uterus due to size of incision and location), I was told I would be rejected even if they put it forward as I didn’t meet the criteria. As a result I just spent the last 8 months in agony. Didn’t matter that I had a massive hole in my stomach and that little pieces of metal thread were tearing at my muscles.

CorianderLord · 02/10/2020 21:17

Hopefully you'll get sorted Op. I'm in central London and it took me 2 months to get an appointment just to get an implant replaced this summer! And then 3 weeks until the appointment.

They asked why I'd let it expire... well I've been trying to get in since June.

That's terrible. Sorry that happened to you. Yes, seems bonkers. If a GP wants you seen urgently then you should be, within reason.

If you manage to make it to Bristol I’d suggest the spire as well.

Prescription for norosthstoe and high does trnexemic acid. Gyn said they will review me after scan so see what the next steps are.

OP posts:
daisypond · 03/10/2020 00:57

That is insanely awful. I had a gynaecologist scan in the summer - was deemed non urgent by the GP - and the appointment was less than two weeks - on a Sunday. They did say if I didn’t take that appointment, I would have to wait a couple of months. Hospital was deserted- central London.

TitsInAbsentia · 03/10/2020 00:59

This is shocking, no woman should be left bleeding for this long it's a huge flag. I really hope you get some help, keep us posted.

BoomBoomsCousin · 03/10/2020 01:06

OP so glad you got a little attention and something that will hopefully stop the bleeding until you can be looked at properly.

All the best with the scan. Flowers

NameChangeAgain222 · 03/10/2020 01:10

I've had norethistherone before for endo bleeding and it worked like magic. I really hope you get some relief.

Mrbay · 03/10/2020 01:19

Sorry you are going through this OP.

In my experience you need to nicely bagger the booking team where your referral is.

I'm in Wiltshire so local hospital in the RUH which seems to be back up and running on most things, a friend has had a 2week appointment for gyne a few weeks ago and I've just recently had gyne surgery (8 weeks from urgent referral).

If you can get in front of a private doc, try to go to the one that can do your surgery on the NHS as I think this is why I was put at the top of the list.

I am so frustrated for you as gyne just seems to be something woman have to put up with, it shouldn't be normal to be in pain.

I hope you get some relief soon
