Lack of NHS services in certain areas (TMI warning)

AIBU?

I sort of know IAMU but un the same breath this is my reality and I just don't know how I go on like this. I know the NHS is amazing, I used to be a nurse before I had children. I think the NHS is amazing but I can't help but feel frustrated at the massive differences across the country.

I have been bleeding since August 3rd after passing a very very large clot. Prior to this I had been experiencing increased discharge, weird spotting and my periods had suddenly become very irregular. I have not stopped bleeding since August 3rd. I now struggle to leave the house as I bleed though the maximum protection available to me. Two GPs have stated to me that I need to be seen urgently for both a scan and a Gyn appointment, in total those two GPs have sent or updated up referrals 7 times. First urgent scan referral was sent on August 3rd which radiology rejected as NOT URGENT. The GP resent that in middle of August.

September 1st GP referred me to Gynaecology as a urgent “2 week referral”. The GP confirmed hospital has accepted this as urgent however the letter I received indicated that it would be a much longer wait as I mentioned informing them of dates in the next 6 months I was unavailable. I know the GP again asked them to see me ASAP on 28/09/2020.

I got hold of appointments today, who were very sympathetic but said I was accepted as urgent but I wouldn’t be contacted until at least March, that urgent appointments are taking 28 weeks currently. Even then it would just be a telephone appointment as they weren’t seeing patients or doing procedures.

I did receive a letter from radiology with an appointment for 19/10/2020 but this will be 10 weeks since I was referred. If I don’t stop bleeding by then it will be 78 days of bleeding.

I am in pain, my children are really scared and confused after seeing me with blood running down my legs on numerous occasions, I am becoming increasingly desperate and depressed. I have not stopped bleeding for a single day, the thought of any day longer is making me very unstable.

I cannot go on like this. I have collapsed twice, I can’t work, I bleed through at the school pick-up which is mortifying for us all, I feel so ill, depressed and afraid at what is happening to my body. It’s having a profound affect in us all as a family, I have children with additional needs and one was excluded this week, he has Autism and learning difficulties, and the fact mummy isn’t as hands on and mummy keeps bleeding has a huge affect when he can’t understand what is happening. Another day this week I took my child to the opticians and I bled though everything and had to call my husband at work to take over while I wrapped my coat around myself and sat in a towel to get home.

I accept and understand this is an unprecedented time and the service is under immense pressure but that doesn’t change my current situation. Why is there such a divide on NHS services? I know that some places are back to a more normal service yet it seems like my area is way behind and that is only going to have a massively determinate affect on waiting lists and future services.

If someone deemed as urgent, like me, needs to wait 28 weeks for a consultation and 10 weeks for a scan, what hope do other non-urgent services have? What am I supposed to do in that time? I can barely function most days, it’s having a huge affect on my mental and physical health.

Glad you’re actually getting seen OP. This is absolutely disgraceful treatment.
Isn’t one, even your GP, wondering why you’re constantly bleeding?!
Hope you get sorted x

Inkpaperstars · 02/10/2020 19:51

It's inexcusable what you have had to put up with Someone. I really hope you are getting some appropriate attention now and they call a gynaecologist down to see you.

Flowers xx

FelicityBob · 02/10/2020 19:55

Good luck OP, glad you’ve gone to A&E

Franklyfrost · 02/10/2020 19:56

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned by pp but are you always going to the same gp? If so then change the gate keeper and find another gp if you can. Sorry this has happened to you. These are scary times.

QuestionableMouse · 02/10/2020 19:57

I was going to prompt you to go to A&E but I see you're there. Glad you went and don't feel bad about it when you've had no help from anyone else.

Major blood loss is a perfectly fine reason to be in A&E!

ExclamationPerfume · 02/10/2020 20:03

Our local hospital has a 24 hour Gynae Emergency Clinic. You just turn up and wait to be seen. Do you have anything like that you could go to?

No, spoke to three different GPs, all very nice, all insist it's urgent and I need to be seen but none will prescribe something to stop it. I think they have referred and updated those referrals 7 times. So I can't say they aren't doing anything. Point is I'm happy to wait it out though if they stop this bleeding.

That sounds amazing. Is that in the UK? Tempted to drive there this weekend if it is! I'm allowed out of a lockdown area for health right?

No, services are pretty skeletal right now. Least in my welsh trust! I really think I'll be sent away but at least I can report that back to the health minister I guess.

Good luck to you op, I hope they are taking this very seriously indeed. Women's issues always get bumped along, behind everyone else; we are socialised to put up and shut up and trudge on. Flowers

ExclamationPerfume · 02/10/2020 20:10

Yes a major trauma hospital in the Midlands. I assume it's still running with the current situation. My Mum was fobbed off by her GP. She knew she had a prolapse but the GP said she didn't. She went to the Emergency Gynae Clinic and was diagnosed and put on the waiting list for an hysterectomy the same day. She had the operation two months later.

So true! I had issues for years and their answer to everything is the coil, which doesn't work for everyone but they make you suffer though it to prove the point! I've been great for over 5 years though and now the last year has been difficult and these past 2 months have been unbearable.

What a total nightmare. Unexplained fainting and putting yourself in danger (like fainting in the shower) is 100% a reason for urgent medical care.

Is it worth you writing down a list of points to make in A and E?

  • time it's been going on for
  • dangerous things that have happened
  • impact on daily life
  • the fact that you are having to take daily iron supplements to prevent you becoming dangerously anaemic
  • regularity and amount of bleeding

Hope they can sort something out for you OP.

Malachite234 · 02/10/2020 20:13

Why wouldn’t they be happy you turned up at A & E ? Why hasn’t that crossed your mind to go there before ?

Hope they sort you out.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/10/2020 20:13

Gynaecology in this country is a shitstorm. All the signs of my issues were missed by the GP and as a result I’ve had 3 surgeries when one probably would have sufficed had I been taken seriously earlier. I hope you get something sorted now. I just paid for the last one. You can’t take your savings with you. Health is everything. If you still don’t get resolution, pay. My op was 5.5 k, a lot less than i thought.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 02/10/2020 20:15

Dear god! This is horrific. This is third world
treatment. What on earth is going on? This is utterly unacceptable.

Arrowcat · 02/10/2020 20:16

Not read the whole thread (sorry) but if you are in South Wales come over the bridge to Southmead A&E and say it got much much worse on a shopping trip to Bristol and the pain is so bad you just had to come straight there!!
Also spire Bristol consultants will often transfer you to NHS if it is something worrying that private is not equipped for. So if you go private first then that might be better than private South Wales.
I'm sorry the NHS has let you down. It's such a lottery after years of underfunding.
Don't be angry at the NHS - be angry at the politicians who change the funding and policies every 4 years and are slowly privatising it.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/10/2020 20:19

Good luck to you @Someonesayroadtrip. I hope you get some answers.

I was referred to Gynae back in February due to prolonged, post menopausal bleeding. I had a scan which showed fibroids and polyps so they wanted to do a hysteroscopy under GA (because I've got disabilities in my hips, back and pelvis which means it can't be done under local). The gynaecologist said he wanted to do it within 4 weeks to make sure everything was ok and he was going to do a biopsy of the womb lining. I'm still waiting, and still keep getting periods of bleeding.

I phoned in July, they said they'd not restarted the lists since Covid. My GP phoned a month ago and they told him "they'd get round to me!" I think it's absolutely scandalous. I completely understand that the NHS needed to be all systems go for Covid but people still needed treatment for other ailments. The way things are going we'll be into everything stopping for a second, third and fourth time before they get round to people on waiting lists.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you actually get some help tonight Flowers

Because it's not the appropriate pathway. I used to be a nurse and it's ridiculous the amount of patients that should be seen in primary care. But now I just don't see any other option.

I think it's my only option, unfortunately don't have that sort of money in savings but I can pay for a consult if nothing else.

I really hope you get this sorted op. My friend was being treated for depression (flung on antidepressants and told to get on with it basically), she knew it wasn't depression and was on her knees with 2 small children to look after. I ended up paying for her to see a private consultant, turned out she had some sort of tumour on a gland in her neck (can't remember the name of it now). Because she got a private consultation the NHS had to pick it up afterwards and she got surgery a few weeks later. She's a different woman now. If she hadnt went private she would still be waiting for the initial consultation, it's an absolute shit show and I refuse to buy into this we must all treat the NHS like its a sacred cow nonsense. Even after her surgery her gp asked her if she still wanted to take anti depressants, she wasnt depressed in the first place!

Sounds like a plan. Can't rock up to A&E as Swansea is in lockdown but I am sure I'm allowed to pay private and go as it's health which is allowed. Might even do virtual consults. If I can just be prescribed something to stop it then I can cope with waiting.

So sorry you are going though this too!

Exactly though, what happens if the hospitals get overrun again and what happens to all these patients waiting. Plus, if you were in another area you would be seen by now! It's just bonkers.

I’m so sorry you’re faced with this OP, you’re being totally let down. It’s disgusting. I was admitted to a gynae ward recently for early pregnancy issues and it was absolutely dead. I was on my own on an empty ward for a day and night - I can only assume this is because all the routine stuff wasn’t happening. The ward was fully staffed and I was kept in regular tea and chats as a consequence. Great for me but less so for people like you.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/10/2020 20:30

Ok well a consultation is a £180-250. Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest. I have learnt the hard way you get what you pay for. The consultant will have instant access to a scanner unless it’s a specialist job, in which case you’ll have to book for another appointment and pay extra. Idk how much as I was under health insurance but I wouldn’t think it will be as much as £500. An Mri is around £1500. Then there would be a follow up appointment to discuss results. That will cost maybe £50 less than the first.
