AIBU to cancel interview?

I have an interview on Monday, however I accepted a job offer (verbal) on Tuesday afternoon?

I was hoping to receive something official through the post before cancelling, but haven't had anything yet (post already been today).

Should I cancel now, even though I've not had a written offer or wait until Monday's post has been and possibly have to cancel last minute?
Or is a verbal offer just as good?

I wouldn’t cancel until you have a signed contract!

BlueBirdGreenFence · 02/10/2020 10:23

You probably won't get a contract until your first day so I would rely on the verbal offer. Congratulations.

Verbal offers can be pulled, it has happened to people before.

BoingBoingyBoing · 02/10/2020 10:23

No harm in going, and until you have a signed contract I wouldn't assume anything.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/10/2020 10:24

Contact the company to see if they can email it to you so you at least have something. Explain the situation to them and I'm sure they will oblige.

DeeThree · 02/10/2020 10:26

Go to the interview. If you are offered the job then you can make a decision as to which one you want. Either way, you have one job offer. Congrats!!

ClarencesMum · 02/10/2020 10:26

I'd still go for the 2nd interview. Options are never a bad thing!

BaronessBomburst · 02/10/2020 10:27

No! Don't cancel the interview.
They may make you a better offer.
The other job might fall through.

seayork2020 · 02/10/2020 10:27

I have always signed a contract on the start date, maybe ask for an email?

Naticus · 02/10/2020 10:29

I get such bad anxiety around interviews which is why I'd rather cancel it Blush

I'm not expecting a contract yet, but I'm waiting for a letter to come through, our post is shocking though.Hmm

Also - thanks everyone. I've been in the same job for a long time so this all unfamiliar territory to me Blush

Go for the interview anyway. I know you have anxiety but it'll be good experience and you don't need this job so you will be less anxious about making a good impression.

ittooshallpass · 02/10/2020 10:42

Definitely go for the interview. Surely it will be much easier having an interview when you know you already have a job offer?

MJMG2015 · 02/10/2020 10:43

Go to the interview, you might like the second job more, or it might pay more etc. Or it might just be a more secure option.

The other job might get pulled, you'd be daft not to keep your options open

Lots of people get anxious re interviews, but the practice won't hurt!!

Best of luck with both jobs!

Go for the interview. I had a verbal offer once, which they retracted after I handed in my notice at my other job!

RatanPostmaster · 02/10/2020 11:00

I would go for the interview. No job offer is confirmed until you sign the contract. I wouldn't take the risk.

IWouldBeSuperb · 02/10/2020 11:11

Please go for the other interview as back up - nothing is certain with jobs at the moment - my company has withdrawn two vacancies this week that had already reached the verbal offer stage - better not to risk it!

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/10/2020 11:22

I had my dream job pulled after a verbal offer. I was so upset. It happens.

flowery · 02/10/2020 11:23

At the moment verbal (and written) job offers being pulled isn't as unusual as it used to be, for obvious reasons, so don't count your chickens.

2me2u2u2me · 02/10/2020 11:24

Can you not ask the company that have offered you a job verbally to email you the offer in writing, only needs to be a few lines but at least you then have it?

Also, I'd go for the other interview, it might be miles better once having spoken to them.

user1493413286 · 02/10/2020 11:26

In the area I work in I generally haven’t had an offer letter or contract for a good couple of weeks. If you go to the interview on Monday and they offer it to you the next day what would you then say if you don’t have an offer letter by then? Would you accept it and then decline once you have the letter? I’d say to do that is bad form and so I woudnt go to the interview on that basis

Doyoumind · 02/10/2020 11:27

I would definitely still go. I wouldn't trust a verbal offer but more importantly you may get to choose from two jobs or negotiate a better deal.

tttigress · 02/10/2020 11:33

A couple of points:

-job offers can get pulled, even if you have had written confirmation

-if you have anxiety about job interviews, this could be an opportunity to confront your fears, by doing a job interview with the confidence that you already have a job offer on the table

-the job you are interviewing for may actually be better than your original offer

DoubleDessertPlease · 02/10/2020 12:29

Definitely go for the second interview! It’s a tough job market out there and jobs are being pulled all the time. You’ll be more relaxed for it, and if you do well, then they’ll remember that should anything go wrong with the first one (hopefully it will be fine though!). You may as pp said also get a better offer/prefer the work.

Dee1975 · 02/10/2020 12:46

I’d wait to have it in writing. Keep your options open
