Just eating oven fish and chips and spotted this horrific sight. I'm now trying not to hurl or Google. It was nice too before this sighting. WTAF is it?? Is it a worm?????

@CoronaIsWatching

Are we that detached from where our food comes from that we can't handle something like this? God help you if you actually had to hunt, kill and eat your own food

I don’t think it’s that. It’s just finding it there when you weren’t expecting it. Like having a lump of gristle in a sausage or a bit of bone in a burger.

I think this is the first time I've ever managed to restrain myself from immediately googling something I was told not to Google! skips the worm and toddles off to Google haddock experts 😅😅

I thought most fish was fast frozen these days in order to prevent worms? Wasn't the rate of fish-worm infestation of humans very high in countries such as The Netherlands where consumption of herring is massive - until flash-freezing of the catch was made compulsory.

Fish are a wild harvest, hence wormy. Freezing kills off the parasites. Where did your fish come from OP? It's likely to have been frozen I think,

Cod is known for having worms in it. Always ask for haddock.

Good god why if someone says don’t google something can’t I just listen. Sometimes it’s better not to know what’s out there.

For all those rejoicing in vegetarianism, 10 yr old DD recently found a live caterpillar in a (raw) sugar snap pea after she bit into it. Amazingly it hasn’t put her off them! Grin

I think it depends on where the cod is from as to whether they are prone to worms. I think Icelandic cods suffers due to lots of seals In the same waters (they need the seals for the life cycle). Other cod doesn’t suffer with worms as no seals.

My partner owns a chippy and he buys Baltic cod which does not have seals in their waters so no worms. And the worms, whilst unpleasant to think about, are completely harmless to us.

And that is not a cod/seal worm. I think it is a noodle or pea shoot. Too long to be a cod worm.

Aahhh this is why my family, who know a lot about fish, tell me never to eat cod.

Cod are bottom feeders ie they go along the bottom of the seabed eating everything that comes their way Inc the detritus.

They said better to eat haddock. I don't see what's wrong with a haddock expert. It's an excellent fish, though I myself am a salmon expert.

And I would only ever eat Alaskan or Canadian freshly caught salmon...

Ugh. This is why we never eat cod where I’m from. Haddock all the way. My granny always said cod was a dirty fish.

TitsOutForHarambe · 01/10/2020 22:35

It does not look like a cod worm to me. Looks more like the stringy bit from peas.

And why is everyone saying not to Google cod worm? It just shows you pictures of... cod worms.

Are they really that bad? Why are people eating fish if this freaks them out so much? If you eat fish you have almost certainly eaten one of these worms at some point.

A pea has germinated before being cooked and that is one of the seedling roots.

You tell a person not to do something.

It’s as good as handing them a golden key direct to said something.

Yes, I googled cod worm.

I checked the box and it's Basa fish. Any views on that one? I'm choosing to think pea string. Cheap mushy peas so could be!

I dont think its a cod worm, they are pointed at both ends. Unless both ends have been cut off by a knife and fork

DH has since said it looked greener than white so I may have scarred a lot of people with worm tails for nothing. That or I'm pissing him off 🤷‍♀️

Basa fish is one I will not eat, farmed in rivers in the mekong, contaminated with god knows what, fed antibiotics like smarties. So for that reason I avoid it.
