Not really an AIBU but it’ll help loads if I get a response for business purposes!

I’ve Developed massive interest in manufacturing (I’m good with a sewing machine) silk products so pillow cases, scrunches, hair bonnets/turbans and eventually bed sheets etc.

However silk is very expensive And people don’t generally like to spend money lol. So would you buy those silk products if you had come across them?

Personally no because I don't have need for your products. There are a lot of curly hair groups on facebook that swear by proper silk products so unless you are already selling through those as some are you may have competition in the market and need a good plan to gain custom. Good luck!

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 01/10/2020 18:25

I make a point of not buying silk so no (vegetarian)

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 01/10/2020 18:27

I’ve always fancied a silk pillow case - but what type of price are we talking if you’re planning on doing this yourself?

funnylittlefloozie · 01/10/2020 18:28

Yes i would as long as not painfully expensive. I'd buy scrunchies and face masks in good quality silk, possibly pillow cases. Not bedsheets or turbans, personally.

SquishySquirmy · 01/10/2020 18:32

I think that if you are trying to make money through handmade products, luxury materials are better!
Because you can charge a better price for them. With cheaper materials there is a limit to how much you can add on for labour without reaching the maximum people will pay for a cotton scrunchie (for example).

Not everyone will want to pay more for silk, but that doesn't matter as long as you can reach and appeal to the market that will.

newnameforthis123 · 01/10/2020 18:33

Totally dependent on pricing, like anything.

ChaChaCha2012 · 01/10/2020 18:34

Have a look on Etsy and see how much competition there is.

WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo · 01/10/2020 18:35

No, because all the items you list are extremely quick and simple to make. Silk can be had very reasonably if you know where to go.

SockQueen · 01/10/2020 18:35

No, because I like stuff that I can wash without worrying about.

princesssparklesea · 01/10/2020 18:38

No because the silkworms are boiled and gassed alive. This is a horrible practice and not something that I would want to pay for.

Kittywampus · 01/10/2020 18:39

Maybe, depending on price. I would be very interested in products made from 'recycled' silk because of the ethical issues.

I love silk as a fabric and have recently bought a silk face mask from etsy which is much more breathable than other fabrics (this is a big deal for me as I have asthma and sometimes find it hard to breathe in face masks).

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 01/10/2020 18:39

Another no for ethical reasons.

pinkbalconyrailing · 01/10/2020 18:42

no because I do not like the feel of silk cloth on my skin

plus I can't be arsed with fabric that need more special treatment than a normal wash cycle in the washing machine.

however I know someone who knits and sells silk baby knitwear quite successfully.

PontiacBandit · 01/10/2020 18:43

I buy mine direct from Vietnam for the price.

Purpledaisychain · 01/10/2020 18:47

Silk is very expensive and not many people have loads of spare cash at the minute. Plus all the other ethical reasons.

If you are good with a sewing machine, could you not try making things out of different fabrics?

Northofsomewhere · 01/10/2020 18:48

As someone with curly hair I'm willing to spend money for well made, quality products. I spent £6.50 on each silk scrunchie I bought a few months ago. I bought a pack on 5 satin one's for a similar price around the same time and much prefer the feel of silk. While I would pay more for these products I would only purchase from a reputable site such as Etsy but would buy from a brands website on future purchases but only if PayPal/Google pay was an option. If I was in your position I'd offer both satin and silk and use the description space to make the differences clear and the benefits of either.

Harmarsuperstar · 01/10/2020 18:48

No, I’m vegan

tara66 · 01/10/2020 18:51

No= unless for curtains at a discount price. Silk is quite high maintenance but I have had some silk dresses I liked but not that taffeta sort - though brides like it.

CatSmith · 01/10/2020 18:53

I wouldn’t buy your product because I have a preference for cotton followed by linen.
I could be very poor and have a preference for polyester.

How does that help you?

Dumb arsed question.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 01/10/2020 18:56

Yes, I’ve got silk pillowcases, dresses and kaftans. I don’t mind paying more for hand made - I paid €600 for my Camilla Kaftan!

Georgyporky · 01/10/2020 18:57

I might buy them from a shop or a well-known online retailer, but not from an unknown individual.

shinynewapple2020 · 01/10/2020 18:57

@princesssparklesea

No because the silkworms are boiled and gassed alive. This is a horrible practice and not something that I would want to pay for.

Same here

BrokenBrit · 01/10/2020 18:57

No, am vegan.
Silk was always recommended for my hair when I was young, I have some vintage silk that I think would be wasteful to throw away but I would never buy silk I think it’s very cruel.

gypsywater · 01/10/2020 18:57

I dont buy silk for ethical reasons, but it is lovely

Proudboomer · 01/10/2020 18:57

No I would have no use for most of your products and I like my bedding to be cotton(brushed in winter 300 count in summer)

You should look at Etsy and see if your market is already saturated.
