Not really an AIBU but it’ll help loads if I get a response for business purposes!

I’ve Developed massive interest in manufacturing (I’m good with a sewing machine) silk products so pillow cases, scrunches, hair bonnets/turbans and eventually bed sheets etc.

However silk is very expensive And people don’t generally like to spend money lol. So would you buy those silk products if you had come across them?

Surprised so many people object to silk for ethical reasons- hope you're all vegans!

Stompythedinosaur · 01/10/2020 22:06

Personally I wouldnt as I ethically disagree with wearing silk.

No I'm not. I'm veggie.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 01/10/2020 22:12

And I dont wear wool, fur or leather either

This one is
Howevèr, I can see why someone who eats meat would object to silk. It is very normal (unfortunately from a vegan point of view) to eat animals. And food is a necessity.

It is a certain type of person who believes silk is necessary and boiling insects alive for it is okay.

thebiggestmoose · 01/10/2020 22:27

@NoMoreReluctantCustodians

So presumably you are fine with the dairy industry - cows kept almost constantly pregnant, calves removed a few hours after being born ( naturally they suckle for a year and have close bonds with their mother)

Male calves killed

Oh well, never mind, you get to look good because you won't buy silk

I'm not vegan. In fact, I eat meat twice a week.

Do I HAVE to be vegan though? Nobody can possibly boycott everything unethical. We can all boycott some things though. Many of us do and I believe every single one of us, yourself included, could do more. Perhaps you purchase items that I refuse to? Maybe you read a certain publication I refuse to have in the house? You might buy Nestle products or don't avoid palm oil/monkey labour?

The salient point is that we are trying. Something is better than nothing and quite frankly, it's sanctimonious shit like this that reinforces stereotypes.

Alternatively, I could say to myself 'Well, I ate that steak on Tuesday so bugger it, might as well drape myself in silk while I'm at it'?

coronafiona · 01/10/2020 22:34

No, it's too difficult to clean. I'd love an occasional treat but it would be a top not a scrunchie

TheHobbitMum · 01/10/2020 22:39

I too wouldn't buy silk for the cruelty involved in making it

Griselda1 · 01/10/2020 22:43

I'm vegan so wouldn't want to wear silk although I do love it.

VenusClapTrap · 01/10/2020 22:44

From a caterpillar’s perspective, silk is horrifying; but cotton production does far more damage to the environment. As a natural fibre it biodegrades as well, unlike man-made fibres like polyester, which will be hanging around polluting the planet for a long, long time.

user1471500037 · 01/10/2020 22:45

No

thebiggestmoose · 01/10/2020 22:47

I agree, no-one can do everything- I certainly don't! I guess what I find irritating is that people do the easy stuff and then seem to regard that choice as morally superior

I mean it's no problem for me to "boycott " silk because I'm not that fussed

But let's not pretend that this is some amazing ethical choice when the same people are happy to eat cheese, battery farmed chicken etc

I mean, agonizing over worms being boiled to death while fine with an uncompletely stunned pig having it's throat cut?

Difference- bacon tastes nice

nocoolnamesleft · 01/10/2020 22:47

Would depend upon cost vs momme.

DCIHoops · 01/10/2020 22:48

@NoMoreReluctantCustodians

I make a point of not buying silk so no (vegetarian)
Same here
Stompythedinosaur · 01/10/2020 22:54

I think that the idea that you shouldn't oppose something that seems unethical to you unless you are perfect in all other ethical choices is nonsense. We should encourage all steps in the right direction!

Yogaroll · 01/10/2020 22:57

*And people don't generally like to spend money lol
*
I don't agree with that. I like to spend money. I like to spend it on good quality and well recommended products. People don't like to spend money on something they can make themselves, get somwhere else for cheaper or better quality. Being good with a sewing machine is VERY different to creating a silk product worth the money you want someone to spend. Silk is a notoriously difficult fabric to work with so it's not as easy as being 'good with a sewing machine' either. How will you finish your products? How will you market yourself? How much will you charge? How will you make sure you source an authentic product? Have you factored in labour, marketing, postage, insurance, material & buisness costs?

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 01/10/2020 22:58

If I came across as morally superior, I apologise. It was just meant to be a factual statement

thebiggestmoose · 01/10/2020 23:01

@Stompythedinosaur

Yes that's kind of the point I'm trying to make ( possibly not very clearly, I am slightly drunk!)

No one is perfect, I just don't understand this kind of thinking- silk bad, cheese fine

It's just doing the easy stuff. Giving up something you're not bothered about

SlopesOff · 01/10/2020 23:14

No, I don't like silk.

It clings after about 3 seconds. It needs careful handling and washing.

Shxx · 02/10/2020 00:28

Very negative answers here.

If you have a passion for this start it. Everyone started from the bottom

Certified carnivore here, but everyone draws a line somewhere? Foie gras, boiled lobsters and now silk from boiled-alive worms are no nos.
MashedSweetSpud · 02/10/2020 00:44

No, for ethical reasons.

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/10/2020 00:50

I would if I could afford it. I love silk and, like a PP, wash (what little of it I have) in a regular wash.

Yaottie · 02/10/2020 00:54

I eat meat but like @Howlooseisyourgoose I have moral objections to other animal products.

I don't buy honey either. Is that alright with you @thebiggestmoose
