Unfriend or unfollow?

ohflipit · 01/10/2020 16:28

Someone I know through an acquaintance sent me a friend request on Facebook. We are not friends but I do see them at a mutual weekly sports event so I accepted. Now my Facebook feed is filled with their far right racist memes! I could just unfollow and keep the peace but am tempted to unfriend to make a point. He will ask why. But ... he's one of those guys who is so stupid there's no arguing with him, he just doesn't understand! So, quietly unfollow or unfriend and tell him why when asked?

Unfriend after posting the comment above. If he ever tags you in a post you will be publicly associated with him.

oakleaffy · 01/10/2020 17:13

Unfriend.

I was unfriended over my Brexit belief {Voted to stay} and was unfriended by two people over this.

I wasn't that bothered, and only noticed when I tried too send a link to someone that wouldn't send.

oakleaffy · 01/10/2020 17:14

Edit ''To send''

tulippa · 01/10/2020 17:14

Unfriend.

Why would you be friends with someone like that?

Parmavioletgin1 · 01/10/2020 17:18

Either tell him and unfriend or add him to your restricted list and he will still show as being your friend but will only see your public posts or your posts that both you and he are tagged in.

NotSorry · 01/10/2020 17:23

Maybe question why you felt you had to accept his friend request in the first place - he's not a friend he's an acquaintance - a racist acquaintance - definitely unfriend

BiBabbles · 01/10/2020 17:24

Depends on how much energy you have for the situation and if you'd feel safe at weekly event if things kicked off.

oakleaffy · 01/10/2020 17:29

I got myself ''Unfriended'' by a racist {I didn't know he was until I saw a specific post he'd made}
He liked going on holiday to Spain and complained about ''People coming to UK''
I replied ''I expect the Spanish feel the same about hoards of boozy Brits buying up all the houses and bars there''...

Unfriended. 👍

@ohflipit

I'm curious as to what the sport is...One that has mainly White Males in of middle age... Golf springs to mind first and foremost.

AltoCation · 01/10/2020 17:32

Just unfriend.

He isn't a friend.

What's the problem?

Derbee · 01/10/2020 17:40

@Adoptthisdogornot

It's not enough not to be racist yourself, we all need to be actively anti-racist. So I would unfriend him and tell him why.
Exactly this
Howlooseisyourgoose · 01/10/2020 17:42

Yes please don’t just quietly unfollow. We should be actively anti-racist.

shesgonebatshitagain · 01/10/2020 17:42

He will probably collect “friends”
Unfriend him and block him
Sorted

Mumlife999 · 01/10/2020 17:46

So true

UntamedWisteria · 01/10/2020 17:49

Be anti-racist and tell him why you are unfriending him first.

I called out a racist post on a 'friend's feed at the weekend. It clearly made him uncomfortable.

If I see something like that again I will unfriend him.

Unfriend.

ohflipit · 01/10/2020 17:58

Thanks everyone! You've got me all fired up now. Hmm, what to put? I'll wait for a particularly bad post then might put "I didn't know you were racist Dave*. And there was me thinking you were one of the good guys". Any other suggestions?

I'm quite respected in the group and many of them are his Facebook friends so maybe it will make others rethink too. One can but hope!

*not his real name and no offence to any Dave's who are not ignorant bigoted racist gits

Oooh, that last post looks a bit weird! Can't you use quote marks and asterisk on Mumsnet then?

YES!
DameFanny · 01/10/2020 18:21

How about 'are you aware how racist that makes you sound?' with a context-specific follow-up, maybe shutting down whatever justification he's likely to make (and the justifications are always so predictable that shouldn't be too hard)

And then something like 'i don't think I can stay friends with someone who sees X as less than human' or whatever?

DameFanny · 01/10/2020 18:25

I'm also quite fond of 'well that's not true is it?' and aim for a 'what a silly billy' tone. I like to think I did wonders* for my sister's BF's blood pressure before I unfriended him. He still gets frothy when my name comes up.

*all the bad things I hope

Honeyandapple · 01/10/2020 18:44

Unfriend.

I've binned anyone who voted Brexit. I dont need people with an IQ in negative integers in my life. Cousins, friends, acquaintances. Gone.
