Over child and cartoons?

I need to know if I'm being unreasonable. Since I was pregnant I said to my OH I did not want our DD watching cbeebies etc. It's not so much the cartoons it's the adverts between them that just try to get your kid to want everything. DSD is obsessed with YouTube opening toys and wants everything. If cbbs is on TV every advert she turns round and says I want that I want that. I know it's just normal but I hate how youtubers and tv dictate what your kids want to buy.
I don't mind if she watches films and cartoons just not the ones with the constant advertising of toys. I absolutely hate the youtube videos that DSD watches and I think they brain wash kids. So I went for a shower the other day, a very rare one and came out and DP had DD Infront of the TV with cbbees. He just laughed and said it would need to be good cop bad cop. Am I being unreasonable? Should I just give in and let her watch it? I just want her to decide what she likes and not be told what to like by YouTubers and adverts. Girls must like pink and princesses etc. Should I just give up now ?

CBeebies is part of the BBC so no adverts??

Barneybobo · 30/09/2020 19:34

CBeebies does not have adverts on it

blubberball · 30/09/2020 19:35

Cbeebies doesn't have adverts, so it's better than YouTube.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/09/2020 19:36

No adverts on the bbc Hmm

FAQs · 30/09/2020 19:36

Agree didn’t used to be adverts on CBeebies and you do have the parent power of saying no, it’s good for children to actually be told no when they can’t have something, it’s part of their learning.

LST · 30/09/2020 19:36

No adverts on the beeb. I miss my kids watching cbbeeies

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/09/2020 19:36

Btw love cbeebies- educational, diverse - just love it

Cosygreythrow · 30/09/2020 19:37

Sorry cos I know everyone's saying it but Cbeebies has no adverts, it's also fab and educational so yabu.

LST · 30/09/2020 19:37

And she is his daughter to. Have you not spoken to each other about it?

Forallyouknow · 30/09/2020 19:37

Erm “mummy I want that, I’ll make a note for your birthday / Christmas” - end of. Just cos they see and want doesn’t mean they get - good way to teach them that - restricting TV is not going to stop the issue ( though I totally agree the toy plying on YouTube etc is stupid and some are creepy - when grown men put on high pitched voices Confused).

Igotthemheavyboobs · 30/09/2020 19:37

I like youtube for the kids songs. There's loads of adverts but because I watch it quite a lot too, all the adverts are for random crap like watches or life insurance.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 30/09/2020 19:38

We didn’t let our children watch any tv until they were 2. By the time they both hit 7, I wished I hadn’t bothered, it made no difference in the long run. CBeebies doesn’t have adverts, neither does Netflix. Better to choose discerningly. There are programs that have women as positive role models out of the stereotypes, such as Do you know?, Katie’s amazing machines, Emily’s wonder lab.

ShinyGreenElephant · 30/09/2020 19:38

Limit YouTube by all means, I dont even let my 11yo on YouTube unsupervised. But if your issue is adverts then Cbeebies is surely ideal? If your issue is more her watching shite, use BBC iplayer and just put on the better shows like Alphablocks etc (anything but Bing)

Cheesewine · 30/09/2020 19:38

Must be some other channel OH put on Freeview. Every advert is about 8 adverts full of toys . I just don't want her to be told what she wants to buy or be told what she has to like. But I think I might be fighting a losing battle.

toomuchpeppapig · 30/09/2020 19:38

So you don't want her watching tv but allow her to watch YouTube videos...? How does she even know about YouTube? How old is she? Also, as everyone worse said, there aren't any adverts on CBeebies...

WellyBootsAreYouFrom · 30/09/2020 19:39

Yabu.

Fluffybutter · 30/09/2020 19:39

She doesn’t say “I want that” while watching CBeebies as they don’t have adverts, just like every other poster has said .
You’re overthinking this and can’t control that forever , it’s normal

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/09/2020 19:39

There are some very good programmes on CBeebies and, obviously, no adverts.

Flipflops85 · 30/09/2020 19:40

CBeebies is about as inclusive as kids tv gets in the U.K. no adverts, no links to toys and they see a wide range of people from all walks of life.

As a teacher, I use short clips of some CBeebies shows as part of my lessons. There’s one about going to the farm, some that use makaton etc Alpha blocks and number blocks are brilliant from a teaching perspective.

Cosygreythrow · 30/09/2020 19:40

Personally I still think yabu.

They're only toy adverts. I used to love watching the toy adverts and making a mental note of what I wanted for Christmas. Never got any of it.

The YouTube stuff is a big much, I do limit that.

RealBecca · 30/09/2020 19:41

Yanbu

Just ask him to use CBeebies then? There’s plenty of shows, it’s on free view, and it’s available until 7pm.

firstimemamma · 30/09/2020 19:42

Cbee bees doesn't have any ads.

Ds age 2 is coming to no harm watching tv and a ban would just make him resentful / jealous when he gets older, goes to friends' houses and learns that they get to watch it. Everything in moderation in our house.

Also a bit of tv is how I get stuff done! No point making these big plans on how it's going to be until the child has been born as then you know the reality!! Grin

Smellbellina · 30/09/2020 19:44

So you’re letting her watch YouTube toy openings but not CBeebies because you don’t like adverts... Confused

Cheesewine · 30/09/2020 19:44

Thanks for all the replies. Yeah we spoke about it when I was pregnant and he agreed but I think it's easy for him now just to put her Infront of it. I will put on David Attenborough or a cartoon film or sensory on YouTube. I dont mind that I just want to keep her away from all the want want want attitude that everything seems to be focused on to make money but I think I would be as well giving in.

Yes I hate the adults on YouTube that put on kids voices to sell stuff to kids. My DSD says she loves them and wants everything they open which leads to her being a bit spoiled because she opens one thing and right away wants the next thing like they do on the YouTube channels. It gives no value to things. Thanks for all the Info about cbbs having no adverts I didn't know that and will need to check it out!
