North Wales in Half Term??

SleepingStandingUp · 30/09/2020 10:01

Like many were desperate for a holiday. Eldest birthday was in lockdown, or wedding anniversary, most of the babies lives tbf, seems likely their Christmas birthday will be too.
Is it crazy to even contemplate N Wales in a months time? Also were in the Midlands not yet in lockdown area but it's a risk.
I have 1 more week to cancel without cost.
I'm aware this is sometimes income and life but I can't afford to waste £600 if we can't go.
Do I just accept it now and cancel?

I’m in North Wales (Wrexham), we go into lockdown at 6pm tomorrow. Try googling North Wales lockdown!

LolaLollypop · 30/09/2020 11:44

I’m booked to go to Snowdonia on Saturday. It falls under the council of Gwynedd which is currently not in lockdown. I’ve watched in horror as everywhere around it gets locked down! Really hoping we can get our holiday there Confused

I looked and it was all S Wales hence the list knowing there are people who live in N Wales. Quote how I missed the aisles on N Wales is a different matter

It won't be long before the whole of Wales is in lockdown 😒

ShinyMe · 30/09/2020 13:18

I'm hoping to visit snowdonia (from england) at half term to help support my elderly parents. The only reason it would be at half term is that that's when I'm off work. I'm not expecting to be able to go though, and I certainly wouldn't go for a holiday.

RantAndDec · 30/09/2020 13:24

I'm in Snowdonia. No lockdown here but I think it's probably coming- Tourism is absolutely bonkers here since lockdown lifted, I've never seen anything like it. It's hard for people who really need a break and a holiday, and also difficult on the local businesses- but the responsible thing is to stay in your own locality for the time being. It's not just about whether you'll catch covid while you're here, it's about whether you bring it here with you.
(All this said with full knowledge of how privileged I am to live in a lovely area.)

ClaudiaWankleman · 30/09/2020 13:31

Fortunately @ShinyMe I think you are still able to visit to provide care or help for family and friends who require it.

DdraigGoch · 30/09/2020 13:44

@TylluanBach

I live in North Wales, lockdown starts tomorrow evening as far as I am aware. I would cancel tbh and perhaps rebook when things improve? There is a lot of backlash locally around tourists being allowed to travel into Wales/through lockdown areas when locals can't.
Particularly when they are from locked down cities with cases far higher than our but can legitimately travel past us to holiday in Gwynedd when we mere locals aren't allowed to cross the county border.
chomalungma · 30/09/2020 14:09

I think - based on what was said in PMQs - was that people in areas with local restrictions in England are still allowed to go on holiday to places in Wales that have lockdowns.

Which seems odd

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 30/09/2020 14:16

@Quaagars

It is all very silly. People from Liverpool can travel to Anglesey, but people from Conwy cannot

That's what gets me - how can people inside Wales not travel around in Wales, but I could go and visit coming from in the UK?!
How is that a lockdown lol, makes no sense!
If you're going to lockdown and stop travel, makes sense to stop people from coming in.

Errrr.... Wales is in the UK.....

Surely that would go against the welsh approach of not allowing any unnecessary travel in or out of the regions in lockdown?

I know haven are shutting their Presthaven site in response. I am due at a haven site in wales (Greenacres) at half term but I think the chances of it being allowed now are slim

Ultimatecougar · 30/09/2020 14:24

No one is allowed into any of the Welsh counties from outside for a holiday. So no people from England can't stay in any of the lockdown welsh counties.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/09/2020 14:24

Sadly you're about as far from the sea as you can get where you are.

Depending on where you are exactly in the Midlands, can you go somewhere else either for a day trip or overnight self catering on an English coast?

JustCallMeGriffin · 30/09/2020 14:27

You're not allowed to stop for any reason in a locked down area. Travelling through is permissible for this reason alone. However increasingly people are suggesting a national Welsh lockdown where no travel into the country is permitted and a return to the 5 mile with common sense rule would be preferable and easier to manage.

There's the insane situation where businesses are split by county lines or sit within half a mile of a county line and predominantly serve another so will lose out on tonnes of local custom.

No they aren't. No one is allowed to travel to/from a locked down area unless it meets one of the exceptions. Holidays are not included...however what many of the locals are annoyed at is people from England for example are allowed to leave their area and travel through areas that are locked down to reach other areas like Pembrokeshire and Anglesey.

Honestly after how the South was locked down over the weekend like a domino effect I'd be amazed if the rest of North Wales isn't locked down by the end of this week.

Caerphilly was locked down 3 weeks ago and there's no sign of the government letting up on their restrictions. Wales being open for half term would be optimistic which is sad because many areas still need that last tourism boost to see them through the winter.

Surely, by locking down the whole of Wales, nobody will get any local custom. Is that better?

Feminist10101 · 30/09/2020 14:32

Boris needs to be prepared to stop travel across the Welsh border - it’s not fully devolved so wales can’t just stop people coming. Given how little airtime Wales gets in mainstream news there will be millions unaware about Welsh lockdowns trying to get in for half term. :(

Bwlch · 30/09/2020 14:37

I don't know how it will work if Wales is 'shut off'. If you drive down the A483 in north Wales, you go in and out of England several times. I know people who live in one country but all their amenities like nearest supermarket, doctors etc is in the other.

A cyclist friend who lives in Wales but not far from the border spent the summer not being able to cycle more than 5 miles around Wales but could cycle into England and go as far as he liked (100+ miles was an 'easy day out' for him). He could go to Birmingham and back but not around his own town.

I've heard in on local grapevine that there will be police patrols on the A55 to stop people heading out of Wrexham area into Chester / beyond.
TylluanBach · 30/09/2020 14:54

Exactly Ddraig, I'm in Snowdonia and it's been beyond belief the volume of folk visiting. It's great for local businesses but some of the behaviours have been intolerable.
It's a tough situation but we must look after our own communities. I can't see people 'just passing through' areas. What if they need to refuel, emergency shop, etc.
It's a situation that needs to be addressed properly. All seems a bit lax.

barberousbarbara · 30/09/2020 15:24

The speed at which local lockdowns are happening in Wales means a Welsh full lockdown isn't far away. Here in Caerphilly we've been in lockdown for 3 weeks. Our number of infections has improved and there was talk of a review this week but we're completely surrounded by other local lockdowns, so that's unlikely now.

We had to cancel a holiday to Cornwall and I had an argument with the holiday company because Welsh rules are different to the English rules, where you can go on holiday despite a local lockdown. Luckily they agreed to refund us but I know many others are struggling to get money back.

Feminist10101 · 30/09/2020 15:25

@Bwlch

When is half term?
Last week of Oct. the week before in some places (Leicester).
Elphame · 30/09/2020 15:31

I'm in Conwy county and have just spent all morning sorting out my bookings.

Given Drakeford's behaviour to date I really don't expect to re-open much before Christmas - if that. Many hospitality businesses will now go under. We were relying on the autumn season to see us through the winter.

As the Welsh health minister admits the rise is being driven by socialising happening in people's homes, this will make no difference and the hospitality business has just been written off as collateral damage

Cleo22 · 30/09/2020 15:32

The North Wales lockdown is for an initial two weeks. It will then be reviewed weekly.

Given the experience of other parts of Wales I would not be optimistic of an early return to normal.

You'd better check. Betws y Coed for example s Conwy. Our postal address is Gwynedd but we are actually in Conwy.
