Aibu to say No to football handouts?!

@Shoopdedoop

If you're meaning No to the government providing support to struggling football league clubs then YABVU. The vast majority of football clubs aren't premier league clubs with multimillion dollar players. They rely on ticket sales for a large chunk of their income. They have backroom staff, groundskeepers etc again on modest salaries with families to support.

It's very ignorant to assume think of football clubs in terms of overpaid players as for the majority of them that's so far from the truth.

All of this!
Burnthurst187 · 29/09/2020 15:42

I was listening to TalkSport this morning and they were talking about the three divisions below the Premier League and the clubs needing help because the matches aren't being played in front of paying crowds

There is a meeting today about this. Not once did they say that "we" will be asked to bail them out. The PFA may well be. Radio 2 don't know what they're talking about

IamaBluebird · 29/09/2020 15:46

Vulgar salaries, I wish someone would pay me a fraction of what Fiona Bruce or a myriad of TV presenters earn. Maybe they could all let some of their vulgar salaries support small struggling theatres.
Or is this to be reserved for football only.

UsernameN0Tavailable · 29/09/2020 15:55

Surely this is the same as any industry though, the most successful get paid too much and the rest of the industry gets paid average or not enough.

Do you think Sony Pictures are going to be propping up small indy production companies? Are Tesco and Sainsburys going to share their profits with the local corner shop? Is Robert Downey Jr handing out his millions to local theatre groups? Are Joules and White Stuff writing cheques to fashion graduates that don't work for them because times are a bit tough?

Why single out football just because you don't like it?

llm24 · 29/09/2020 15:55

@IamaBluebird

All types of jobs have vulgar salaries not just those of footballers

Footballers get such a hard time because of people like you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about

There are more footballers who are not on a premier league type salary

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/09/2020 15:56

Except many footballers do give a lot away, are supporting local communities, just as they always have.

There have even been threads here about some of them!

HeresMe · 29/09/2020 16:02

The government could let them have fans back in, it's only fair if not. Going to help them

thereisonlyoneofme · 29/09/2020 16:04

All different organisations etc want the Government to step in, but its the taxpayers that are going to be picking up the tab for all the Covid
bills. There is no money tree, perhaps they thick the Bank of E should just print more, dont think it works like that otherwise we wouldnt be trillions in debt

No, no evidence whatsoever of those greedy premiership footballers helping out Hmm

luckylavender · 29/09/2020 16:14

@blagaaw99 - but what's the purpose of government other than to look after its people? Nobody has chosen to stop earning a living, the government decreed it. Throwing all those people to the wolves will be far far more costly in the long run. What's your solution?

loobyloo1234 · 29/09/2020 16:17

YABVU OP

You do know if these smaller clubs go under, thousands upon thousand of people will lose their jobs? Why is it ok for the Government to bail out some industries and not others?

I do agree however, that PL clubs with rich owners, should help out. But how can that happen when so many owners do not even live in the UK and therefore dont really give a shiny shit about what happens to the employed people within the UK

Sirzy · 29/09/2020 16:22

@bramleyapplesandcustard

Exactly, I am no football fan but I think it’s unfair to accusing them as a whole group of not helping out.

Let’s not forget the amazing work that has been done by Marcus Rachford too

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 29/09/2020 16:25

Yabvvvu. What else shouldn't be helped out in your opinion? The bigger clubs are helping out the smaller ones by paying for weekly covid tests for a start. A lot of the smaller clubs will be screwed either way which hurts when it's something you're passionate about. I feel the same about the arts. It's all absolutely shit and if the government can help out then of course they should.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 29/09/2020 16:28

Donates shirt space? Big hairy deal. Grin

I'm not talking about the admirable work done for the NHS charities I'm talking about actual rich footballers putting their hands in their pockets to donate to support poorer clubs and players.

No sign of that, is there?

Actors however -

IamaBluebird · 29/09/2020 16:28

Llm24, you've actually misunderstood what I was saying . Someone up thread mentioned vulgar salaries and I was asking if this was to be just aimed at football. I've supported my team since I went with my dad many years ago. If you read my post again you'll find that I was actually making the same point as you.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/09/2020 16:36

It's unlikely that premiership teams will aid a bail out.

It's long been suggested that if lower league teams fail premier teams will set up in their place... somewhere to put their academy graduates once they hit 18. B teams, so to speak.

Sorry, I almost miss teaching this stuff!

@blagaaw99

Benefits didn't cross my mind. I don't know where all the money will come from that everyone wants the government to spend, can anyone answer that? I wonder whether those who want the government to support everyone and everything understand budgets and that there isn't a money tree.
You might not know where the money will come from, but you must be aware that it is far better to prevent employers going out of the business, and to keep as many people as possible in work and paying tax, than to let unemployment increase to astronomical levels and consequently see tax revenues fall. Not supporting jobs is an incredibly short sighted proposition - even the Tories think it would be a bad idea!
SimonJT · 29/09/2020 17:01

I’m a professional sports man, rugby, not football. When I was playing in RFU championship I was earning £11,000 a year, that was ‘decent’ other players were on as little as £7,000 a year.

In my current league I’m on pay for play, so I haven’t had any rugby based play since February. We’re just about clinging on, the ground we use is fairly expensive, there are talks of a significant rent increase, if that happens we will fold as there aren’t any other suitable and affordable pitches in the area.

llm24 · 29/09/2020 17:16

@IamaBluebird

I apologise

Yes I understand budgets.

I wonder if you understand the impacts of a large recession and high unemployment? This isn't about saving companies who were badly managed. It's about trying to save jobs. Yes in the short term it will cost money - but so does high unemployment. If you can keep jobs in the short term the hopefully these people will continue to be taxpayers and fund education, health and the welfare system. High levels of unemployment don't achieve that. The government are trying to stop the recession biting too badly. And that's a good thing

sugarwithcoffeeandcream · 29/09/2020 17:31

@LastGoldenDaysOfSummer Harry Kane has sponsored the team this year. Sponsorships are pretty important to a team. But hey, let's just slag him off because he hasn't done more.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 29/09/2020 18:01

I slag off all of those earning six figures a week who aren't giving money to support poorer players and clubs.

They should be ashamed.
