Royal Mail Post Woman does round with fag hanging out of her mouth

TapingTheTop40 · 28/09/2020 13:55

I often see the same Royal Mail post woman delivering Mail door to door with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth.

I think it’s really odd, it doesn’t look professional and surely she shouldn’t be allowed to.
Now, don’t worry, I don’t plan on complaining.
But after having the conversation about it to my DH (an ex-smoker) he thinks it’s perfectly acceptable and is doing no harm.

So I wondered. Is it just me that thinks it’s weird? I am prepared to be told yes.

I’ll add, I also notice when, say, I go to somewhere like Matalan or Dunelm and there are employees smoking outside the front door in uniform. And I think this is not right also.

YABU- who cares if she smokes while delivering people’s mail.

YANBU- that’s not right

YANBU. I bet she’s not allowed. I have no desire to have smoke near my house/letters!

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 28/09/2020 14:37

@PersonaNonGarter

Covid has unleashed sticky beaks and sneaks and social police. It’s so ominous.
This. So fucking tiresome, earnest and pitiful. Get a life, OP.

I call our postie Hagrid ,he’s the size of a house and wears shorts in all weathers. He’s always so cheerful , restores my faith in humanity.

fauxflowers · 28/09/2020 14:39

Agree it looks unprofessional but I really couldn't get worked up about it and wouldn't cross my mind to complain. My mum knew a delivery man who was seen vaping in his vehicle and was reported and lost his job, I just don't understand why someone would feel the need to report unless it's personally affecting you, very sad people around.

HarrietOh · 28/09/2020 14:41

If my postie was handing me a parcel at the door I wouldn't appreciate it! But otherwise, don't really care. Agree it doesn't look professional though.

Ginfordinner · 28/09/2020 14:41

We had a separate smoking area well away from the front of our building when we had offices. We had customers who were spending millions of ££ with us who would visit occasionally.

Having smokers cluster around the front door of any building looks unprofessional, and is unpleasant to walk through.

I can't get worked up by a smoking postie.

AuntMasha · 28/09/2020 14:42

Oh God, please just leave the poor woman alone. I loathe this neo Puritanism and curtain-twitching.

BlackForestCake · 28/09/2020 14:48

I detest smoking as much as anyone but she’s out in the open air and as long as your mail doesn’t smell of smoke when it arrives I don't see an issue.

Impressed that her lungs can keep up with all the walking she has to do and smoking as well. She probably won’t be able to do both indefinitely.

oldwhyno · 28/09/2020 14:48

FFS whatever happened to live and let live? Just mind your own business.

2020visions · 28/09/2020 14:50

I can see how it appears unprofessional - but I just don’t really get bothered by things like this at all. I just see that as quite an insignificant thing to be honest but I appreciate some people really hate smoking.

loobyloo1234 · 28/09/2020 14:50

Mind your own business. Maybe she's stressed. Maybe she's had a tough few months. Who has the time to look at the what their local Postman/Woman is doing every day anyway

Scweltish · 28/09/2020 14:53

You are right op. I’m sure she’s not meant to be smoking doing her rounds, and it does look a bit shit. It’s nothing that would bother me though.
I’m guessing that people do complain about these sort of things. I was a little surprised at a gardener I’d hired a couple weeks ago. He came round with an apprentice to sort out my front garden. The proper gardener left to get some more equipment, he was gone a while and during this the apprentice actually knocked on my door and asked permission to smoke a ciggie. It wasn’t like I was paying him by the hour and I was surprised I felt like he had to ask. Like my oh said though, people can be funny about these sort of things

xsamix86 · 28/09/2020 14:54

Honestly, as unprofessional as it looks, with things the way they are at the moment the chances are the woman has an increased round, possibly due to redundancies in the workplace or people isolating, and maybe doesn't have time to take a break. Even stopping for a few minutes could put her behind, and possibly impact her ability to finish her round and pick up the kids from school. She would probably value a break and knows its not proper or professional herself.

Scweltish · 28/09/2020 14:54

*HE felt like he had to ask

Soubriquet · 28/09/2020 14:56

I’m anti smoking and I think yabu

It’s outdoors, she isn’t entering your home and it’s her health she’s fucking with

And people on their breaks are allowed to smoke! Even if it’s outside the shop with their uniform on Hmm

Nestme · 28/09/2020 14:58

I think on her own head be it unless she is dropping the ash and butts on your property.

I once had a postman that left about 12 elastic bands on my drive every day so I asked him not to or put them in the recycling bin. Never happened again. I would only say anything if she's dropping fag butts or blowing smoke into your letter box.

ThirstyGhost · 28/09/2020 14:59

Stop staring at her and everyone else out of your window. This is what we used to say to my gran, who got annoyed by things like this, kids on skateboards, the neighbour's husband who was a builder having muddy boots he left outside his front door, kids playing outside, etc..., etc.... None of these things are worth wasting mental energy on. Be a better person than my gran!

Amber0685 · 28/09/2020 14:59

Ours does as well it doesn't bother me. He is great, leaves our parcels in the recycling bin if we aren't home to save us a trip to the delivery centre, we always give him a bottle at Christmas.

buckeejit · 28/09/2020 15:02

Yabu. I couldn't give a shit.

jessstan2 · 28/09/2020 15:02

Who cares?

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 28/09/2020 15:03

In your head, do you really give a shit?

foxyroxyyy · 28/09/2020 15:04

I had a postie that did this. It's fucking annoying as when he'd knock for a package the stink would come in and a few times he actually blew smoke in my face.

Have since moved and front door is in the living room which is horrid. Anyway current postie chit chats loudly on her phone while she does her rounds so I can hear half her convo. Bloody annoying.

ExclamationPerfume · 28/09/2020 15:04

It's a revolting habit. We had one do it when ours was on holiday. All the mail stunk of fags.

PattyPan · 28/09/2020 15:05

Yanbu, it's gross and no one wants to open their door to take a parcel in a cloud of smoke. When I've volunteered for a well-known charity they've always said if people want smoke breaks they have to take off their garment which identifies the charity as they don't want it to affect their brand and I think a lot of places are the same. The thing that really gets me though is when you see staff smoking outside a hospital! Of all the people who should know better!

TwilightSkies · 28/09/2020 15:06

Stop being a curtain twitcher. It doesn’t affect you so focus on something else.
