Hi everyone:)
I live in a large village of about 2000 residents and live as a single parent with a two year old.
Yesterday the local post lady, (whom I know by her first name but is not an acquaintance of any kind), stopped me whilst I was out walking with DD.
She basically started the conversation with, ‘ Oi, do you have a ‘bloke’ living with you now’? She wasn’t friendly. She was forceful and matter of fact.
I was a little taken aback at first and asked why. Her reply was that she had delivered a small parcel through my letterbox a few days before with a man’s name on the address.
When I realised which post she was referring to I stupidly gave her an explanation: My neighbour had been having trouble receiving an order for a pair of prescription reading glasses and I suggested that he could have them delivered to my house. My address is easier to find for some reason and I thought nothing of offering assistance so he could receive something important. Nothing more I may add.
Her reply was, ‘ well I mentioned it to my neighbour and my husband and we all thought it was a bit strange and wondered if ‘you’d moved someone in.’
WTF? She is discussing my post with people and even challenging me in the street regarding my relationship status!?
Am I over reacting here?
Sorry but I feel it’s cheeky at best and I feel scrutinised and bullied at worst.
I take it on board if I am just being prickly.
Thanks for listening x

Bloody heck, can you report her? That's not on at all.

QuacksInTheDark · 27/09/2020 18:19

She’s fucking rude and unprofessional. Should have told her to fuck right off.

MaverickDanger · 27/09/2020 18:19

If she’s that observant, I’m surprised she didn’t recognise the name as being your neighbours.

redcarbluecar · 27/09/2020 18:19

That would annoy me - how weird.

BloggersBlog · 27/09/2020 18:21

Wow!! That is hard to believe! She has admitted to you that she has broken confidentiality within her work Shock

ReallyLazy · 27/09/2020 18:21

Id complain. Not sure to who though

UniversallyUnchallenged · 27/09/2020 18:23

She caught you off guard... next time be ready. Why are you asking, eye contact, why are you talking to people about me - asked as a question and wait for an answer

Intrusive, gossipy and unnecessary

NicEv · 27/09/2020 18:23

If this is true then you definitely aren’t being unreasonable, she has breached your confidentiality by sharing this information and I would report it to the Post Office. I find it hard to believe a post woman would behave like this but if this is a genuine thread then I would definitely report it - it is a massive breach and completely unacceptable

Cauterize · 27/09/2020 18:24

I'd have told her to mind her own bloody business and slammed the door in her face. Bit late for that now but I think you should say something to her next time you see her.

Rinoachicken · 27/09/2020 18:24

Wow - this reminds me of my mums old postie in New Zealand. Tiny village, and if she could t deliver a parcel she’d just take it home with her until she happened to see you in the village!! When my mum went round to collect it she said there was piles of people’s post there!!

You should absolutely report this woman. Completely unprofessional and breach of confidentially.

TheSkyFalleth · 27/09/2020 18:25

Omg yanbu!
100% report her!

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/09/2020 18:25

Wtf has it got to do with her.

TenShortStories · 27/09/2020 18:26

How rude!

You've got to have some fun with this though. Send yourself lots of letters addressed to different male names. Change the handwriting and envelope colour for each one and stick little love hearts on some etc etc Grin

Having grown up in a tiny village I can WELL believe it! Village busy bodies are the WORST and they always seem to engineer themselves a position right at the centre of everything, like the post office or dr receptionist etc.
FourDecades · 27/09/2020 18:28

My first thought was she going to report you to DWP

Reddog1 · 27/09/2020 18:29

If this is true you have grounds for complaint.

recklessruby · 27/09/2020 18:30

Bloody hell OP do you live in Greendale? She sounds like Mrs Goggins.
Yanbu. None of her business.

12309845653ghydrvj · 27/09/2020 18:31

“That’s sooooo funny Mrs Postie, what a coincidence! Was just in the pub the other day spreading shit about YOUR sex life!”

What a grade A bitch and so unprofessional.

cloudylemonade13 · 27/09/2020 18:32

Does she work for Royal Mail? Apart from it being rude and none of her business it's massively unprofessional

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/09/2020 18:34

That's not on.

I'd do this also I just think it would be funny 😁
Thisisnotnormal69 · 27/09/2020 18:41

Jeez how unprofessional

Emeraldshamrock · 27/09/2020 18:44

It sounds like you live in the village of horror.
The C.F definitely report her the bloody cheek. I'm sure there's some discretion required delivering post.
Stories like this remind why I love living in the city.

hadtojoin · 27/09/2020 18:45

When I was a child our local post lady used always knock at the door to hand over the post. She used to read any postcards out to my mum at the doorstep and then ask who had sent it and were they a relation?. All parcels had apparently 'unfortunately been torn open in the sorting office' every time just enough to see the contents. If the contents couldn't be seen she used to try and get mum to open them in front of her 'in case they had been damaged'.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 27/09/2020 18:47

I'd also be looking at moving as much of your admin life to online (bills, statements ect) as you can, to help keep her at bay. I had a strange postie for a while and ensuring as little as possible came via snailmail helped keep him away from the door.
