Possibly just caught accidentally shoplifting

Just went to return some bits to Primark that didn't fit and get DS some new vests. Went downstairs to go and pay and put the vests under my pram when I was in the lift as they kept falling off the top of my buggy. Returned the items and completely forgot to pay for the vests and walked out the shop with them not realising. I noticed a security guard was behind me when I was walking to the bus but I didn't think anything of it and he didn't say anything and must of lost me at some point. I only realised when I got home about the vests. :( I'm suffer badly from anxiety and I'm really worried that the store are going to contact the police or something. The vests only cost £6 and I'm happy to return them but also worried I may get in trouble if I do :(

The other side of coin is. 3 times I have found £10 in the self cash out. Twice Sainsbury's once in Tesco. No one ever phoned to say money had been claimed so I assume it went into Mr Tesco and Mr Sainsbury's pocket. I sometimes think I just should have put it in a charity box.

Funnyface1 · 27/09/2020 16:52

Just realised we didn't pay for our nectarines at Asda today.

FedUpofBeingMyself · 27/09/2020 16:52

I bought a bag once went to pay and they opened it up to check it and pulled out 3 size 18 neon coloured things. Really not my style plus I was a size 8. I burst out laughing but they were taking it really seriously 😳 I had to explain over and over I hadn’t put them there but I think had they been smaller they’d have accused me properly of trying to steal

FedUpofBeingMyself · 27/09/2020 16:52

*thongs

Gobbycop · 27/09/2020 16:55

The definition of theft (uk)

Is to dishonestly appropriate property belonging to another with intention of permanently depriving the other of it.

I'd call them and say you'll be in to pay tomorrow.

DillyDilly · 27/09/2020 16:55

Instead of crying, why not just phone the store and explain or go back to the store and pay??

SharonNP · 27/09/2020 16:57

Hello mums, we are a young couple expecting our first baby in February 2020. We've placed an offer on a house in Dyke drive, Orpington, post code BR5. Can anyone provide feedback on this side of Orpington if you are familiar with it. There is a council estate very close and we are hoping that it wouldn't affect the mortgage valuation of the property. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

SharonNP · 27/09/2020 17:04

Sorry, I just realised I've posted in anothers thread. Apologies.

saraclara · 27/09/2020 17:06

Crying anxiously over this is way over the top. Virtually everyone has done something like this accidentally.
The police aren't going to knock on your door, because they don't know who you are or where you live! Quite apart from the fact that Primark aren't going to report anyone to the police for £6, and if they did (given that you've left the shop a while ago) the police would laugh in their faces if they tried.

Just do what most of us did when we made the same mistake. Give them a call or go back, apologise profusely, and let them tell you whether and how they want you to pay (or not).

BumbleFlump · 27/09/2020 17:11

😂🤣 lol at tampax, boy with a dress and sparkly shoes...dd stole two rather snazzy purple glittery rubbers by putting them under the buggy when she was in the loose in the toy shop. I just took the back and apologised

JustDavesWife · 27/09/2020 17:11

My then 4 year old dd tried on a mermaid tail in Hamleys a few years ago with the help of her brother, we were in a rush to get out and catch our train plus it was winter and freezing so she had a big coat on. We only noticed when she kept tripping over it but we were almost at the station so we just left it and told the kids that we had seen her wearing it so my husband had paid for it!! I phoned Hamleys the next day to let them know and ask if I could pay over the phone, the woman laughed, said she's sure it won't break the bank of Hamleys and to wish my daughter a merry Christmas!! She had that tail for a good few years!!

Dunnowhat2do · 27/09/2020 17:17

This happened to me at m&s once - didn't have a basket and popped things in the basket of the buggy. I went to the till to pay and missed a couple things that moved behind other things I already had in the basket and I didn't notice until I was home. I called m&s, offered to pay on the phone and they said its fine, it happens. I made a donation to charity in their name instead.

Don't beat yourself up about it, if it was a genuine mistake it is fine. Its not like you purposefully went out to steal. Take the items back to the store on your next visit. Perhaps speak to a manager.

JustDavesWife · 27/09/2020 17:17

@SharonNP I know this was the wrong thread but I live in Orpington! That really isn't the best area to move to, not sure if you have kids but the closest secondary school to you there is Harris and it's truly awful, everyone at my kids primary school do everything they can to not be offered that school. I think the local primary school could be Grays Farm and it has good Ofsted reports but the children and parents are less than desirable 😬 Can you look at houses in BR6? There is a lot of trouble around Dyke Drive with the Harris Academy kids and it's just not that nice an area.

Orangecake123 · 27/09/2020 17:20

My youngest sister did this once with batteries-my mother just returned them to customer services.

Cadent · 27/09/2020 17:20

Why does every OP seem to have anxiety these days?

They would have stopped you if they saw you. You got away with it.

Sarahpaula · 27/09/2020 17:20

Dyke drive!

longwayoff · 27/09/2020 17:25

Menopause brain dead story. Popped into supermarket, picked up a few items, paid, packed and left. About a quarter of a mile up the road, noticed I'd also picked up the wire basket - empty thank heavens - which was hanging, unnoticed by me, off my arm. Confused

ticktackted · 27/09/2020 17:25

I went back to a cafe a while ago to pay for the previous day... I walked my mum to her house then we both thanked each other for treating the other to lunch Blush cafe hadn't realised & were just delighted I went back! You could always call first to explain & apologise.

SSNNPPBO · 27/09/2020 17:26

JustDavesWife thank you very much for your valuable feedback. It really helps.

Sarahpaula · 27/09/2020 17:28

Has anyone else intentionally shoplifted.

I did for one summer about ten years ago.
My thinking was - they are big businesses - it doesn't really matter.
It was very easy , I just used to walk out with stuff. Stealing was kind of normalised to me, because in my university a lot of people used to do it. I thought the wrong way about it. I saw it as too normal.
My friend in college used to steal loads of stuff at Tesco. She would scan half at the self service till - and not scan half. They didn't have a staff member standing there in those days. She is a nurse now.
Eventually - I had the better, kinder thought of "the security guard could lose his job because of me". He probably wouldn't lose his job but I just became more moral in my thinking and thought that I could hurt some one with what I was doing.

nearlyoldenough · 27/09/2020 17:29

Did the same with a teapot in BHS once. Put it on the under buggy shelf to keep it safe , completely forgot it was there and left the shop.
Was terrified when I realised and had to go back to the shop to pay, thought I was going to feel a hand on my arm any second !

Frappuccinofan · 27/09/2020 17:30

They wouldn’t call the police as the police wouldn’t be interested

However if they did notice you, they might look out for you next time unfortunately

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 27/09/2020 17:32

You don’t need to cry about this.

But you do need to do something. Don’t be passive. Phone them up and offer to pay over the phone. You can do this.

popcornlover · 27/09/2020 17:34

Oh god, do you remember what happened to Richard Madeley and the crates of champagne? I think they arrested him at a later date, and that was an accident! Be careful!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 27/09/2020 17:37

You should definitely do something about it as although I very much doubt the police will be involved, it sounds as though the security guard did see you and is suspicious. If you ever plan on going there again much better just to phone up and pay.

I don’t understand why you would take the items back though. Presumably you need them and had intended to pay for them. Good luck. Deal with it and move on. No need for drama. Just don’t leave it to fester.
