To expect Tesco to deliver my order in bags?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 27/09/2020 11:58

Got a delivery today & had to unpack it & put in my own bags. Is this the new normal for Tesco? Asda charge 40p for a bagged delivery - is this an option with Tesco now?

I've googled but can't find any up to date news about it.

Lucky. Im being buried under ocado bags as they haven't taken any back since March lol

Mcmole · 27/09/2020 12:24

I miss the bags - our kitchen is on the first floor so it's a bit of a pain now. However I time the deliveries for when I know I'll be busy with DD and make DH deal with them Grin

whirlwindwallaby · 27/09/2020 12:24

Just have some large supermarket reusable bags or an ikea bag to unload into?

SillyCow6 · 27/09/2020 12:26

Keep a box or crate in the house, bring it to the front door and fill it from their crate then wave the driver off and put it all away in the kitchen. Use 2/3 if you need to. No single use plastic and a quicker and easier time for you and the driver too

Estrellente · 27/09/2020 12:27

Why do you need to put the items in other bags? Surely you just put them away?

rosesinmygarden · 27/09/2020 12:28

So, why do they give the option of bagless???

And since it's possible to opt for bagless how else would you suggest I do it?

And since it's possible to opt for bagless how else would you suggest I do it? It would probably take even longer to take all the items out of the tray at the door and put them in my own individual bags or boxes than to carry each box the 4 steps to kitchen and put all the items on the counter.

JKRisagryff · 27/09/2020 12:35

I don’t know if it’s a regional thing but where I am it’s the done thing to just unpack the stuff in your kitchen while they’re getting the other crates from the van, takes no time at all. As in onto a work surface, not putting everything away).

AlwaysLatte · 27/09/2020 12:37

I've got 4 ikea bags that I keep in the hall cupboard and when the shopping arrives I decant it onto those. I have so many plastic bags otherwise!

My kitchen is a long way from the front door and the crates are heavy so it would take me forever to walk backwards and forwards with armfuls of stuff while they shuffle about from foot to foot at the door.

@Estrellente

I don't use plastic bags I use the big foldable reusable ones. each one holds about a trays worth of food so once filled it cuts at least four journeys from the hall to the kitchen with handfuls of shopping.

Then the bags go back into the cupboard until the next week or if I need them for a different reason.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 27/09/2020 12:41

I keep some large bags by my front door which I decant the shopping into when it arrives. Takes no time at all- Why is that so difficult?

I have piles and piles of the tray liners that they used to use- can't really reuse them and they aren't recyclable- such a waste.

rosesinmygarden · 27/09/2020 12:41

@JKRisagryff that's exactly what I do. They knock the door with the first box and I take it the 4 steps to my kitchen while the get the next one. I've been at friends or family members homes and they do the same.

I've never got the sense that the driver was annoyed or delayed with me doing this. Often DH and DD are here and we all take a box each. Probably takes about 2 minutes tops. It would take longer to put everything in bags or boxes by the door as I'd be watching what went on top or what etc and there wouldn't be space for anyone to help.

I do this, too - those IKEA blue bags are also pretty good for this especially if your other half can help you (they get heavy)
FenellaVelour · 27/09/2020 12:51

I always bring my own box or bags to the door too, easier and you’re not left with millions of bags.

LastTrainEast · 27/09/2020 12:53

Right now I lift out the bin liners in 20 seconds and the driver leaves. Better for both of us.
When they stop us having liners I'll either carry the crate through or if they object transfer the items to some smaller plastic crates I bought before for this purpose. This will take much longer so they will need more vans and drivers which means more environmental impact.

Also in that case I will do twice as many smaller orders to make it easier so twice as many trips and greater environmental impact.

We really can't make a biodegradable crate liner?

FallonsTeaRoom · 27/09/2020 12:54

@rosesinmygarden
^Why did you have to put it in your own bags?
I just carry the boxes into my kitchen and unload them one by one^
@ @MJMG2015 bet your delivery drivers just live hanging around while you do that

It's what they expect! Our (Asda) delivery puts the crates in the porch and we take it in to unpack in the kitchen. Takes a minute or two.

Ginkypig · 27/09/2020 12:57

They always bring two or three trays at a time here. Apart from the fact I can't lift a tray and carry it as then I wouldn't have a free hand for the walkingstick. Even if I could that would still leaves the guy or woman standing while I go back and forward Because they already have all the trays there.

JinglingHellsBells · 27/09/2020 12:58

There is the option of bagged or bagless at the end when you check out- it's very clear.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 27/09/2020 13:01

I bought the Ikea blue bags from Amazon and they were perfect when the shopping was bagless. There is no room in my kitchen to put the trays down as it is tiny. The Ikea bags are great even with the liners, because I just drag the ikea bags across the floor if they are too heavy to lift, so I can lift the liner straight into it with frozen or fridge, then drag it to the kitchen.

I have always reused the carrier bags as bin liners, so these new large liners will also be recycled either as bin liners or litter tray liners.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 27/09/2020 13:02

This was the email I received from Tesco on 18 September

You might have noticed that we temporarily reintroduced carrier bags for online orders during COVID-19, to help keep everyone safe.

We know that many of our customers are now ready to return to bagless orders, and we’d like to continue playing our part to reduce plastic waste. So from 21 September, you’ll get the option to either select a bagless order, or have your shopping packed into tray liners and carrier bags.

If you don’t make a selection, your shopping will automatically arrive without bags. And from 21 September onwards, there’ll be a 40p charge if you choose bags.

I’ve got an existing order, what do I need to do?
From 21 September, just head to our website and go through the checkout again. You can then select your preference for your order to be bagged or bagless.

I haven’t ordered yet, what do I need to do?
Next time you shop with us, keep an eye out for the bag preference at the checkout. If you don’t choose a preference, you’ll automatically go bagless.

How do I prepare for a bagless order?
It helps to keep some bags by the door, or in your boot if you’re using Click+Collect.

Serengetiqueen · 27/09/2020 13:02

Plastics a menace. You don’t need it op.

daisychain01 · 27/09/2020 13:05

I was happy when the option appeared for us not to be given 20 carrier bags with our shopping. What a waste!

I know it was due to the emergency of the first lockdown etc, so it's good to see they now give the option to allow people to bring their own bags for life to the Click and Collect van and quickly decant everything into their own bags. They tend to put chilled stuff into one container, and fruit and veg into a separate one, so it's really easy to pack it ourselves.

movingonup20 · 27/09/2020 13:06

My Tesco driver let me keep the crates and switch them the following week for work (big order, whole truck basically) wish they would routinely allow this for a one off deposit charge (say £20, returned if you stop online shopping) ideal for those of us with storage

Littleposh · 27/09/2020 13:12

It asks when you checkout if you want it in bags or not . . .

Always has
