AIBU to remove the CF cones?

Pre-covid, we parked our car both in front of the house (blue on diagram), and down the side opposite neighbours house (who has a drive further down.) Occasionally we would get a note asking us not to. No good reason for it as we never parked close enough to the junction to obstruct the view coming out. We ignored it. Other neighbours parked their too and also had notes.

During lockdown some cones appeared (red circles). We weren't going out to work and my car battery died so sat where it was parked in front of our house and so we weren't bothered.
Now most people are back at work we are getting back to the situation on most streets whereby people park where they can get a space and sometimes that is outside our house. Not a problem, but the cones are still there which means that about 3 car spaces are out of use because one anonymous neighbour has decided to cone the area off for their convenience.
If it was the neighbours whose house is opposite the cones, I would kind of get it, but it isn't as we speak to them and they are baffled by it too.
So far, I have not needed to park there. If I do in the coming weeks, would it be unreasonable to move the ones?

Remove the cones, and dispose of.

Remove cones.

I would crash into the cones, get whiplash and then sue them.

Move them.

They aren't official cones

This isn't your neighbours' parking space - it is a public road: they have no right to put the cones out. It may even be an offence against your locale by-laws.

Just move them and park. I wouldn't throw away the cones though, just move them to the pavement and park.

If they become aggressive call the Police. The Police will be happy to inform them that the road should remain cone free and that anyone can park there.

We had this at our old house in Bournevile. Cheeky cow up the road coned off a space. Police removed it for her and gave her a telling off for being aggressive to parkers.

How many cones are there OP? Enough to make a rough cock and balls on the pavement?

Ask local schools if they can use the cones - now useful for social distance markings and pedestrian route controls in schools. Better that throwing them away.

@underneaththeash

I’d move the comes and put a note on them asking them to not be left on the road as they’re blocking parking spaces!

Sweet!

Out very late and take them. Keep them! They can be handy.

Whoever owns them clearly doesn't care about them as they've left them god knows where for days Wink

I have a neighbour who does this nonsense. I reported her cones to the council and someone came to speak to her, she shouted abuse at him, the police came, it turned into a whole thing. The cones were gone after that but now she puts out potted plants in big plastic tubs. I normally don't need to park anywhere but in front of my own house, but there was a work van in front of mine the other day so I had to encroach on 'her' space by about ten feet. I just put her potted plants on the edge of her front steps and went on with my day. She stood outside of my house and screamed for about 30 minutes until the police came again - she turned her abuse on them and they ended up arresting her! I didn't call them - I don't care what she does, I am 80% deaf and her screaming doesn't bother me in the least. I also drive a 20 year old beater, in case she feels like kicking it, and I have clearly visible home security cameras pointing up and down the street ever since we had a break-in a few years ago. I can't recommend the deafness but I do recommend the crappy car and the cameras to anyone else with similar issues!

Who owns the road? We sometimes use cones on our frontage (we live close to a school) but we own the land to the centre of the road and it is unadopted.

So the cones don’t belong to your neighbour, who owns that bit of frontage, but have been left on their land. That’s not legal even if it weren’t a road for public use. If your neighbour doesn’t object to you parking there, you are fine to do so. I live on an unadopted road also. It would be impolite for me to park in front of the neighbours house long term because of this but we all have drives.

I would take some battery operated fairy lights and tinsel and decorated the cones like Christmas trees. Then I'd relocate them to wherever they could be enjoyed by the public but not obstructing the road or path Grin

I love that you used aerial photograph instead of just drawing a diagram. I feel like I'm floating above your neighbourhood like a bat.

Ohtherewearethen · 26/09/2020 17:25

You could report them as fly-tipped rubbish, which is basically exactly what they are. If you can find out who they belong to, write 'property of name and address' on them first.

This is an exceptionally enjoyable thread with a lot of creative ideas.

Very harsh comments on sketch though. :-)

@CausingChaos2

Yanbu to move the cones but nobody should be parking within 10 metres of the junction. Hard to tell if that’s within the distance from your sketch but maybe that’s why someone has put the cones there?

Was just going to say this...

Actually, Mysterian- now you've pointed out how high OP is from the ground, I have developed vertigo looking at the diagram.

I feel sick . . .

I feel faint . . .

I am overcome with terror and may never sleep again . . .

Is there a lawyer in the house?

Buy several sets of identical, but progressively smaller, cones. Each week replace them to give the impression the cones are shrinking- perhaps after each rain shower?

It's not long until Bonfire night, could you make a Madonna-themed guy with two of the cones?

Move the cones and stick an official looking notice on them warning that steps will be taken if they obstruct the highway again. Quote some made up law to make it look official.

scarfy · 26/09/2020 17:33

I would move the cones without hesitation!
