AIBU to remove the CF cones?

Pre-covid, we parked our car both in front of the house (blue on diagram), and down the side opposite neighbours house (who has a drive further down.) Occasionally we would get a note asking us not to. No good reason for it as we never parked close enough to the junction to obstruct the view coming out. We ignored it. Other neighbours parked their too and also had notes.

During lockdown some cones appeared (red circles). We weren't going out to work and my car battery died so sat where it was parked in front of our house and so we weren't bothered.
Now most people are back at work we are getting back to the situation on most streets whereby people park where they can get a space and sometimes that is outside our house. Not a problem, but the cones are still there which means that about 3 car spaces are out of use because one anonymous neighbour has decided to cone the area off for their convenience.
If it was the neighbours whose house is opposite the cones, I would kind of get it, but it isn't as we speak to them and they are baffled by it too.
So far, I have not needed to park there. If I do in the coming weeks, would it be unreasonable to move the ones?

If you “innocently“ complain to the council about the cones will they come out and tick off your neighbour for putting them there? Just wondering... Wink

@Hingeandbracket

This is a parking diagram with no vehicles. That's all I'm saying :)
Hi have to second what hinge says. I'm also disappointed in the diagram quality. Lack of cars, no drives or paths marked and it doesn't (to me) look like the houses are drawn to scale. And are there pavements? Dropped kerbs? It raises more questions than it answers....
MrsGradyOldLady · 26/09/2020 16:15

But yeah I'd definitely move the cones and park there.

ILikeTrains · 26/09/2020 16:16

@CausingChaos2

Yanbu to move the cones but nobody should be parking within 10 metres of the junction. Hard to tell if that’s within the distance from your sketch but maybe that’s why someone has put the cones there?
That was my thought too. They look like they're close to that junction so people shouldn't be parking there anyway.
DadDadDad · 26/09/2020 16:17

@Ohdoleavemealone - I don't know why people are so rude about your diagram; it's perfectly clear, and read alongside your post makes complete sense. I'm quite impressed that you went to the trouble of adding about 12 houses that are not even that relevant to the issue.

I think you simply move the cones to the pavement and park there with a clear conscience, as long as you are not too close to the junction (check what the Highway Code says on that).

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/09/2020 16:19

Move the cones, they have no right to police parking spaces on a public roas

ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 26/09/2020 16:24

Just call the council and tell them the neighbours have put cones on the public road to reserve parking spaces/prevent others from parking on a public street and abuse anyone via notes who dares to move them or park there.

They'll deal with it.

Ohdoleavemealone · 26/09/2020 16:25

People mentioning the 10 metre thing, there is a clear change in paving on the road where is is an acceptable distance to park. Not that it makes a difference round here. The estate is less than 10 years old and still hasn't been adopted so people park opposite junctions on some roads and at the other end of the street near some garages one neighbour parks inches from the edge of the road. It pisses me off but I don't put cones there.

I8toys · 26/09/2020 16:26

If they're not put there by the police and the highways then move them as they are causing an obstruction. They don't own the road.

Devlesko · 26/09/2020 16:27

You shouldn't park near a junction, maybe the neighbour is trying to keep it safe against those flouting the law.

littlefireseverywhere · 26/09/2020 16:29

Remove the cones!

Chewbecca · 26/09/2020 16:29

Better diagram needed Grin

ShellieEllie · 26/09/2020 16:29

Report the cones and who put them there to the council.

DeliciouslyFemale · 26/09/2020 16:30

Borrow a very very long ladder, go out in the early hours and use some Gorilla Glue to stick them on the wall, about 15’ high. Draw an arrow in chalk, pointing upwards, on the wall. Then set up a camera so you can record their reaction when they discover them missing and spot them on the wall. 😁

I tried this and the council didn't even reply, let alone do anything. So I moved them myself.
DeliciouslyFemale · 26/09/2020 16:31

Or steal them and get a roller to go back and forth over them until they’re completely flat, then leave them back. Look around the area for anyone getting tarmac laid and bung them a fiver to do it for you.

Ohdoleavemealone · 26/09/2020 16:38

Some very extreme suggestions here!

The diagram is a delight, I was greatly heartened to have such a picture with corresponding written clarification.

We had a neighbour that did this, I have a battered 4x4, I moved the cones parked there and then replaced the cones on the bonnet and roof of my car. They disappeared the next day. Not so helpful if you have a nice car tho.

tornadoalley · 26/09/2020 16:43

Leave the cones on the pavement or elsewhere with a note to say any further infringement of the parking areas will result in a call to the council for obstruction of the highway.

starfishmummy · 26/09/2020 16:44

The estate is less than 10 years old and still hasn't been adopted

So if its an unadopted road then it's not public highway and "someone" owns it. Googling found me this

"On unadopted highways, waiting incidental to the use of the highway may be permitted, but long-term parking or "vehicle storage" may be a "trespass" against the owner of the road"

I prefer the term creative. 😇

Another option is placing each cone behind/in front of a wheel and very gently driving over them and leaving your car parked on top of three very squashed cones.

Ohdoleavemealone · 26/09/2020 16:47

@starfishmummy it certainly isn't my neighbour that owns it! Grin

underneaththeash · 26/09/2020 16:48

I’d move the comes and put a note on them asking them to not be left on the road as they’re blocking parking spaces!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 26/09/2020 16:51

Drop them off at your nearest university, OP. The students will make good use of them as headgear post-pub. Grin

ToastyCrumpet · 26/09/2020 16:52

I would be finding out who the cones belonged to first. Then I’d ensure that everyone else knew too. After that would comes removal of the cones and parking of cars in the space, in rotation.
