Hi all. Since yesterday my teens been coughing every so often, maybe every half hour its 'cough cough' so just 2 or so coughs then 30 or so minutes later will do it again. He said he was coughing at school but didnt get sent home or anything. Is this type of cough OK or does he need a test? Just asking as my mate has said he is not coughing enough so I felt silly trying to get a test. AIBU to get one and isolate?

This info is widely available Just keep an eye on them.

Yogafairy · 26/09/2020 13:36

When I had it back in Jan/feb, my cough was awful. When it started it went on for a few minutes and I always felt like I wanted to cough in between.

For me, it was a noticeably different illness. I felt very ill for 4 weeks.

At the time the GP didn't want to test me as I hadn't been to China.

He was surprised when the results came back.

Thank you for your replies. @yogafairy glad you have recovered x

Non-productive but sounds like it is. Not just the odd cough. Probably worse when lying down. Sounds a bit like a seal barking.

FeedtheFish123 · 26/09/2020 14:36

I don't know the answer to your question.

But it is probably best not to take Yogafairy's word for what it was like as in January February with no test it is highly unlikely she had Covid-19. But one of the countless other viruses that circulate in winter.

Yogafairy · 26/09/2020 14:53

You can take whoever's word for it you like. I was tested and had it. Why are people on here so pathetic.

MitziK · 26/09/2020 15:01

It sounds dusty to me.

It's a dry cough, but not like the bark of croup or the 'hiss' of allergies.

And there can be a change to one like when a drink goes down the wrong way if the person is becoming very ill.

Merryoldgoat · 26/09/2020 15:03

@FeedtheFish123

Yoga HAD the test ffs.

Tunnocks34 · 26/09/2020 15:04

For me it was mild and barely noticeable. Just like the whole thing actually - it barely impacted me. Everyone is different!

Tarararara · 26/09/2020 15:09

Sadly, the advice doesn't define what an 'episode' is. All we can deduce is that an episode falls somewhere between one cough, and an one hour of coughing (as an hour of coughing is in itself enough to meet the criteria). In the absence of any definition of 'episode', then your teen meets the criteria, since they've had more than 3 'episodes' in 24 hours.

It's crap though. My teen had similar at start of week following a cold, although his 'episodes' were more 'cough-cough-cough-cough-cough-cough-cough' each time. But entirely par for the course for him anytime he gets a cold. But, it met the covid cough criteria, so kept him off school, booked a test, and fortunately got the negative test result back within 24 hours.

But I feel shit that I took a testing slot away from someone with 'real' symptoms or a keyworker, for what I 'knew' was a cold-cough, even though I followed the guidance to the letter.

Pinkstars2501 · 26/09/2020 15:09

For me it was mild but definitely there. Not as bad as you'd necessarily expect it to be, annoying more than anything.

Floraflower3 · 26/09/2020 15:10

If i had it when I think I did (had the hospital test for antibodies), it was very mild, I don't think I classed it as a cough really as I could suppress it if that makes sense? I did buy tickly cough syrup and sucked on soothers though (denial/ wondering if it was hayfever).

I did have a bit of a tight chest though (felt like bra had shrunk).

Zoecarter · 26/09/2020 15:12

I was ment to be having an operation tomorrowZ I have been coughing as you discribed and just been diagnosed as covid positive. X

Ohdeariedear · 26/09/2020 15:13

I think I had it in February. My cough was dry, like a seal barking and once I started I couldn’t stop. If I took too deep a breath I’d start coughing. The worst bit was I was coughing so hard and for so long I had to wear panty liners for about two weeks as I was leaking every time I coughed (TMI sorry). Don’t normally have that problem but this cough was relentless. I felt better for a day or two after a week of it then it came back worse for another week.

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 26/09/2020 15:15

Indistinguishable from any other cough. You all need to lockdown and they need to be tested as they have a new cough.

Why can’t people just do what they need to to stop the spread. We are all going to be locked down because people think they can tell if they have Covid or something else. You can’t tell the difference.

AutumnSuns · 26/09/2020 15:17

Sorry he needs a test and your whole family/bubble needs to isolate until he does.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 26/09/2020 15:23

DS and I both tested positive, he didn't have a cough until after he was at his worst with fever etc and it was his normal cough, I had a cough that would come in episodes but once I started I couldn't stop, I also would feel like my chest was tight/heavy going up stairs at home and for some weeks after, I also lost my sense of taste and smell for well over a month (it wasn't consisted a symptom then), DH wasn't tested as it was only hospital testing back then and DS was admitted but only I was allowed to be with him. DH was also unwell with a temperature but a much dryer tickly cough, as I say he wasn't tested but it seems unlikely we were all ill at the same time, DS and I tested positive but his illness was an unrelated coincidence.
Essentially we all had it and our coughs were different. Follow the guidance, isolate and get him tested.

GreyishDays · 26/09/2020 15:26

It’s ‘I’ve got a bit of a cough’ in this house.

So I agree with others saying he needs a test.

policeandthieves · 26/09/2020 15:29

Constant, dry, irritating and non productive. Started about a week after the fever.
Different in lots of people
Get the test

Prufrocks · 26/09/2020 15:29

There's really no need to be like that!

People are being told not to 'waste' tests on people not showing clear symptoms!

Damned if you do & famed if you don't This fuck op of testing is on the Govt not individuals. If you could easily book a test, more people would.

Yogafairy · 26/09/2020 15:32

We got this from school last week.

Actually they have gone back and found Covid in the blood of patients who they still had blood samples of who died of respiratory infections back in December.

We are pretty sure we had it December/January (We know where we got it from and there was links to China)
The cough was incessant. Nothing like normal winter cold coughs and colds.

I coughed so much I thought I was going to have a heart attack

HollowTalk · 26/09/2020 15:38

@Yogafairy , how did you get tested in January/February? Were you in hospital?
