Hi all. Since yesterday my teens been coughing every so often, maybe every half hour its 'cough cough' so just 2 or so coughs then 30 or so minutes later will do it again. He said he was coughing at school but didnt get sent home or anything. Is this type of cough OK or does he need a test? Just asking as my mate has said he is not coughing enough so I felt silly trying to get a test. AIBU to get one and isolate?

Yes I was tested at the end of feb in hospital as I had a link with Mr Walsh, the man that had it in Brighton.

HollowTalk · 26/09/2020 15:48

Did you find you could relax, afterwards, knowing you were unlikely to get it again?

Essex16 · 26/09/2020 15:51

I called my GP because DD had breathing difficulties and a cough. He had a massive go at me and said she needed a test. I queried it because she’s 4 and said surely we can’t test her every time she’s got a cough (kids always have coughs!) but he said any new cough needs to be tested, even if it’s the only symptom

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 26/09/2020 15:57

So you had it end of february yoga? Not Jan/Feb. I dont understand why your GP was reluctant if you had been in contact with a confirmed case?

For me it was like a dry, deep cough. Sort of barking but not quite croup. It was quite painful and lasted a long time. But the first day or so were just a basic tickle, it took a few days before it was as above

monkeyonthetable · 26/09/2020 16:14

@Yogafairy - that's so interesting. DH had that cough for over a month. He was really ill in January - in bed for a week - and then had a continuous cough for weeks afterwards. It happened before we were aware of Covid. We got very worried about him at the time as I've never seen him so ill in 25 years. But he's sure it wasn't coronavirus as he says it was too early and hadn't reached UK by then. I think it had, we just didn't know it.

oakleaffy · 26/09/2020 16:14

I read that the corona cough is like a tickly dry short cough..
If someone is prescribed opiate painkillers, a cough can be totally suppressed until the painkillers wear off- I had a cough and sore throat and felt breathless in March BUT felt better kneeling on all fours-
Never had a test and don’t have a thermometer.

I am sure infections in Bristol will soar- Students are everywhere not keeping any form of social distancing.
No masks either.

ThatDamnScientist · 26/09/2020 16:17

Late March I had a cough just like your teens. I was assessed over the phone ( no tests unless you were hospitalized at that point) as I was also breathless and fatigued (I am asthmatic but this breathlessness was different to what my almost none existent asthma was like; prior to March the last time I had needed my ventolin was summer previous year but at this point I was taking it around 10 times a day). The doctor who assessed me said it was very likely CV (again only a drs phone assessment, no swabs taken).

But the cough, was just a shallow, dry cough a couple of times every half hour. It took about a month to resolve to and I'm still using my inhaler regularly (about 2/3 times a week).

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 26/09/2020 16:17

But yoga was tested so a known confirmed case @monkeyonthetable. Its not new information, she had been in contact with another known confirmed case.

Its possible covid was around in jan, proba lt quite likely that there were one or two cases, but this doesnt tell us anything new

ThatDamnScientist · 26/09/2020 16:20

Oh should day no one else had a cough or breathlessness. DH was fine. Dd1 had sore throat and fever and was bedbound. Dd2 had a temp that was difficult to control for about 4 days but nothing else.

Could well have been any number of viruses but all I can do is take the drs word that it was what he thought.

MayIJustAsk · 26/09/2020 16:23

Thank you all. I tried ordering a test but there is none available it is saying try again in a few hours, which I will do.

For me it was a cough that did nothing. It was infuriating. No other symptoms at all. Just this hacking cough that kept coming and going for no apparent reason. Then it developed into breathlessness, and within a couple of days the cough and everything else went. There was no tiredness, no cold symptoms, nothing at all other than this cough that reminded me at the time of when I had Swine Flu back in 2009.

Angrymum22 · 26/09/2020 23:12

I had cough ( persistent dry), low grade fever and lost my sense of smell for nearly 3 months. I wasn’t unwell with initial infection but very tired for a month or so after. I had it at the beginning of Feb, I wasn’t tested but work in very high risk healthcare and had numerous contacts with patients who had been to Italy skiing.
I would not have claimed Covid but for the loss of smell, which started as the cough settled. It was strange as it returned intermittently which was weird particularly when I suddenly got a whiff of my perfume. Fortunately it has fully returned and I’m no longer burning dinner every evening. The dog has started to smell now, I suspect she’s been smelly for a while but I was blissfully unaware. Oh and I realise that the fridge needs a good clean!

Needhelp101 · 27/09/2020 00:26

I regularly coughed so hard I puked.
My chest felt like something heavy was sitting on it.

Lucked · 27/09/2020 00:37

Can someone link to the studies showing covid retrospectively found in swabs/blood from December from the U.K. I know there were some groups looking into this but I haven’t seen any results.

I think there is such a wide range of presentation that you will not get a definitive answer.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/09/2020 09:11

It might only be the Daily Mail but this person caught Covid in mid December and was admitted to hospital 3 days before China announced any outbreak.
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8715661/amp/Pictured-British-grandfather-84-died-Covid-19-having-caught-December.html

This is a more worldwide study which says it was already out across the world in late 2019

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUKKBN22I1FQ

There are a lot of articles on this being the case.

Personally I think the end of November - January/February cases were a much less lethal form of Covid and were the 1st wave. The 2nd and more lethal mutation was in March and over the summer.

I think we are either getting another mutation which is less deadly or the upturn in infections but still relatively lower death rate is because it is circulating amongst younger people who are able to fight the infection.

AlwaysLatte · 27/09/2020 09:33

My son had that, a cough-cough then ten mins later another cough-cough-cough, then another one about 15 mins after that. Then he said his breakfast tasted funny. I'd read that it was 3 coughs in an hour - get a test so we booked one (in the meantime he never coughed again and it turned out his breakfast tasted funny because I'd bought flame raisins instead of the usual ones). It was a pain because we all had to drop everything and stay in the house for 5 days, and my husband ended up driving for 5 hours altogether for the test. It was negative. Because we all had to isolate anyway I would definitely recommend all staying home and watching the symptoms for a day or so before booking the test.

MayIJustAsk · 27/09/2020 10:44

Thank you all, that's really interesting hearing how differently it has affected people. I started coughing last night my chest feels really heavy today. I have managed to book a drive through test for today not far from us.

Mine was quite phleghmy. Cough, cough ,coughhhh.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 27/09/2020 11:05

That was exactly the kind of cough I had with Coronavirus in the spring. I was surprised too.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/09/2020 11:28

The cough I had was incessant. To the point of choosing whether to breathe or to cough.

MellowMelly · 27/09/2020 11:56

We all had it in this house and we were affected so differently. I had the worst cough I have ever had. It was a dry hacking cough that made my eyes stream with water, my face turn red and I was literally drooling everywhere trying to get a breath. It was so forceful that I also wet myself. I also made a weird noise at the end of each coughing session much like a bark noise. Every now and then my cough would produce clear cattarh but it was mainly dry. It was horrendous, I won’t ever forget it.
My daughter had the teeniest little cough for about a day but went on to get the most severe symptoms out of all of us.
My granddaughter had a small intermittent dry cough for a week.

Not much help to you op as what I’m basically saying is the cough really affects everyone differently but it was definitely a dry cough for all of us.

HollowTalk · 27/09/2020 12:36

@Oliversmumsarmy

The cough I had was incessant. To the point of choosing whether to breathe or to cough.
That sounds terrifying. I hope you're OK now.
Oliversmumsarmy · 27/09/2020 17:09

I am fine now but even after the cough type symptoms it took me till April /May to start feeling normal again and being able to do things I normally take for granted eg visiting 2 shops to get all the shopping in and not being so exhausted after one I have to go home and save the other shopping trip for another day.

I never got tested (didn’t even cross my mind at the time it could be this new virus from China) and later when I was checking the symptoms of Corona and I ticked all the boxes people kept telling me it wasn’t as it hadn’t left China in December.

Now we are learning more about it I do think more people have had it than was first thought.

As I said upthread dd had direct contact with a group of people from China in mid December.
Then she got sick and it passed around the family.

Laiste · 27/09/2020 17:29

I've got the seal bark/donkey brey cough :(

Sounds like you're going to get something up have to swallow it and be done with it but nothing ever comes.
