Or is this just life?
Covid
Furlough
Daughter developed depression and eating disorder
Lost all 3 holidays due to covid and quarantine rules
Burgled while in bed: both cars and all devices stolen
Daughter sent home from school cos exposed to covid and no car to collect her therefore £40 taxi there and back
2 /3 hour public transport to get to work

I can't wait for things to get better, though they could be worse.

That's sounds like a really shit run of bad luck. But I think 2020 has been like that for lots of people, for example, most people have had cancelled holidays and covid scares. I hope things look up for you soon.

But why on earth did you put your dd who had been exposed to covid in a taxi? That poor taxi driver, what if they're high risk or have family members who are. You don't know how it could affect them. I'm not sure what the alternative was but that seems really selfish.

Mindymomo · 26/09/2020 09:21

I sympathise.
FIL died February.
Covid came.
DH had heart attack and needed triple heart bypass mid April. Absolute nightmare time, not knowing if and covid patients were in same ward as they were not testing on admission at the time.
Have private health insurance which was useless to start with as all private hospitals were taken over by NHS.
DH too ill to come home before op, but not life threatening as he was being monitored.
Private hospital agreed to take him on condition of negative covid test, which took 2 days.
On arrival to private hospital, another covid test and another wait. In private room, but no perks of private healthcare.
Operation successful after waiting 6 days and back home after 15 long days.
Holiday cancelled, but rebooked for last week. A wonderful needed break was had by all in the Isle of Wight.
Selling FILs house, all going well, hopefully.
But we are happy and positive, don’t watch the news much.

Flowers it’s a bad run of luck but it will get better! You just have to weather this period of time Smile

Talk about stick the boot in, what would you prefer? She gets on a bus/train therefore exposing even more people? Or walk?! Not everyone is fortunate enough to drive Hmm

What else were they supposed to do though?

A £40 taxi ride so not walkable.

Getting a bus or train would put more people at risk.

Asking somebody for a lift, same problem as a taxi and I assume they would have done this if they could.

Sorry you've had a rubbish time. Unfortunately this year has been like that for a lot of people. Sending Thanks
I hope things improve.

I think you’ve answered your own question. They had no choice!

Florencex · 26/09/2020 11:55

You have had a bad year, unfortunately it also looks like a pretty typical 2020. It has not been much fun all round. 😢

DDiva · 26/09/2020 12:42

The burglary must have been horrible and not having cars is obviously having a big impact.

How long do you expect to be carless ? Would hiring be an option ?

MummytoCSJH · 26/09/2020 12:44

@Invisimama because they had their cars stolen?!?!?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 26/09/2020 12:46

@Invisimamma the more you think about it, the more that sounds like kind of a dick post, doesn't it?

yawnsvillex · 26/09/2020 12:47

You're not alone. 4 family deaths (non to Covid) 4 holidays cancelled.

Fucked off.

DrDetriment · 26/09/2020 12:49

I'm sorry to hear about the burglary and your daughter but it doesn't sound that bad in general compared to everyone else. We are all going through covid, frankly you were lucky to be furloughed as many people have lost their jobs or businesses. Losing a holiday? Sorry I have limited sympathy as I would have killed to have had one holiday booked, let alone 3. Have you tried practicing gratitude? Might help you get things into perspective.

Don't you know you should be grateful to have your cars stolen? How selfish can you be op honestly.
LakieLady · 26/09/2020 13:02

That's really pretty shit.

Things can only get better from now on, I think, and the cars & devices are replaceable (assuming they were all insured).

Not having a car is a huge hassle, and I always make sure that my insurance includes a hire car in the case of theft or accident. In normal times, I have to provide a car to do my job, so I'd have to fork out for one for work, so it's worth the few pounds extra.

Cocomarine · 26/09/2020 13:06

Well, you’re in a position to have had 3 holidays (or at least 1, if that was a repeated postpone and cancellation) so it’s not all bad.

Some of it is how you choose to look at things.

My furloughed husband thought he was really fucking lucky to be getting 80% of his pay for doing diddly squat in sunny weather. Don’t get me wrong - he was worried whether there’d be a job to go back to, it wasn’t just a long holiday. But his attitude was - “wow! I can’t believe it’s as much as 80%!”

Yes, you lost holidays - but I’m sure you still had time off, and there are still good ways to spend it.

I don’t really see it as a “run” of bad luck. More some shitty things that create a knock on of shit. The cars being stolen created the long trip to work and the expensive taxi. I think realising that is actually one thing that went wrong, not actually a “run of bad luck” can help you stop feeling like everything is going wrong!

It is a really shitty time for you though Flowers I hope your daughter gets the support she needs, and the insurance sorts the cars out quickly.

SBTLove · 26/09/2020 13:09

@Invisimamma
Taxis have screens or have recently installed them and hygiene standards are excellent; cabs wiped down with anti bacterial between hires, sanitiser available, masks worn, actually a safe way to travel; well where I live anyway.

BrieAndChilli · 26/09/2020 13:17

It’s a lot of shit things to happen but as others have said pretty much everyone in 2020 has had a ‘run of bad luck’

Most people have had a selection of the following and I don’t know anyone who’s been unaffected by this year

Covid
Furlough
Redundancy
Self employed so didn’t get any government help
Business owners who have struggled to keep afloat
Family deaths (from covid and from no -covid)
Weddings cancelled
Holidays cancelled
Unable to see family/friends for months
Health issues due to the virtual lockdown of health services
Dental issues (some people have pulled thier own teeth out!!)
Cancer not being detected in time
Unable to pay rent/mortgage and the threat of repossession looming
House prices spiralling and mortgage offers being withdrawn
Depression and anxiety has sky rocketed
Home schooling causes loads of issues and stress
Shielding due to health issues
Spates of burglaries as criminals get more desperate
People being sent home form school/work to isolate, unable to get a test.
Dog thefts are rife at the moment
Exam stress

This year has had an impact on everyone. I’m not saying having your cars stolen wasn’t shit as it is but I think realising that everyone has had bad shit happen this year will help you get some perspective and find a way forward.

zoemum2006 · 26/09/2020 13:30

2020 has been just horrific. My business income is now 10% of what it was and my mum has lost her eyesight without any hope of improvement (she’s only 63).

I do try to stay grateful for our health and for my mums life (it was looking bad for a while).

LindaEllen · 26/09/2020 13:38

I think we should all just be able to write 2020 off and pretend it never happened.

I've had quite a bit of bad luck myself including covid in April which I'm still not entirely recovered from. My grandad nearly died of it, was in hosp for 2 weeks and obviously nobody could go to see him.

Now my gran seems to be showing signs of confusion and mixing things up. We don't know if it's something we should be concerned about, or whether it's just because this year has been confusing in general.

My stepson is failing college because he didn't do his lockdown work properly, and lied to us consistently about it. So possibly won't even come out of it with any A Levels.

It's all just so sucky.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 26/09/2020 14:06

That is unfortunate, especially about your DD developing depression & an ED. TBH the rest of it seems a lot less significant. Presumably you could claim the value of items back that you lost in the burglary. Lots of people lost holidays this year, & lots of people can't afford to go on holiday, although I know that you may not have been able to claim those back on insurance.

Realistically a £40 taxi ride to collect your DD seems fairly insignificant, & a 2/3 hour commute to work is long, but not outrageously abnormal these days? And at least you still have work. Can you look into ways to mitigate the stress of the commute - get free ebooks & audiobooks, for example? If you've got a library card, most libraries have a scheme that allows you to download them for free via an app. Some allow magazines too. I use them a lot.

2 car, 3 holiday family, quibbling over £40 Confused

Flirtydove · 26/09/2020 15:02

2020 sucks. I broke my arm this week and spent 8 hours in a and e missing most of my DS 4th Birthday Sad. Oh and I'm not entitled to any sick pay.

MayIJustAsk · 26/09/2020 15:07

Think we are all having a crap year OP

MayIJustAsk · 26/09/2020 15:07

Wish I could afford 3 holidays I've not had one in years

IveProbablyAskedYouThis · 26/09/2020 15:19

I wonder why people can't sympathise/empathise with other people without being resentful and being desperate to tell the other person that. If I felt that resentful and envious of someone else (who actually wasn't deliberately being an huge insensitive smug arse) I would just say nothing. I wouldn't offer faux sympathy.

Can't we just either say nothing or sympathise with people having a shit time even if we secretly think they're having less of a shit time than us and are a bit jealous. It's like not sympathising with someone who has got a broken arm because you have a broken foot and can't walk and that's worse.

Oh well. Could be worse OP, one time I felt fed up and posted on MN and got a horrible, unsympathetic "count your blessings" response which was much worse than yours, so count yourself lucky Wink
