To think trick or treating is a complete no no!

Hi all, I love Halloween. I love taking dc trick or treating in our village. People are great here and it's always a big thing.

But.. I've already told dc it won't be happening this year due to obvious reasons. Can't see how it's safe and I assumed everyone would feel the same. So many children around here in a small place. People even travel here from surrounding areas. Too many to promise full social distancing. And giving our sweets with close contact isn't ideal. People have mentioned leaving in bowls outside but multiple hands in a bowl sounds hideous.

So yeah I've already told dc that it won't be happening assuming everything will think the same. Of course everyone can make their own decisions what they want to do.

The local village Facebook group has a new post about how so many kids still want to do and how to make it safe.

Maybe there is a way 🤷‍♀️

But aibu to think that it's probably not the best idea at all? And people should make fun in other ways.

We are planning decorations, sweets and chocolate at home, costumes and sweets at home plus Halloween movies. Maybe a take away in the evening.

I really don't want multiple children knocking on the door because I don't really want to answer over and over again! I usually love it but this year sounds like a nightmare!

What a bad idea..i won't be opening my door to superspreaders. Your idea of Halloween at home sounds really fun

RabbitBeaver · 25/09/2020 20:23

I saw an idea on Facebook where you put a picture of a pumpkin in your window and parents take their kids on a walk and then give them a sweet for every one they spot.

Thank you. I was worried I sounded like a right misery when saying we wouldn't be taking part! Just feels like it's not safely possible and leaving sweets in buckets is unhygienic off multiple hands go in. Even if every child used hand sanitiser just grabbing sweets from every house seems boring without the usual knocking and saying trick or treat. Gonna buy some sweets and chocolates for dc so they won't miss out or anything! 🎃

I'm going to do a Halloween treasure hunt round the house - like Easter with clues and sweets hidden. My older daughter will go out with friends for a couple of hours - she had a party planned, which we then had to reduce to 3 friends, then cancel entirely. Im not keeping her locked in I feel mean, but she knows not to be knocking on doors

Nicecupofcoco · 25/09/2020 20:25

We are doing a pumpkin trail! Well that's if people still decorate there house, which I'm guessing they will! We can walk round and the kids can take a sweet from me for his bag every time we spot a pumpkin in a window! I know it's not the same, but... I'm gonna ty some Halloween games at home, Your ideas sound great op!

marmite79 · 25/09/2020 20:25

There is talks of the pumpkin hunt here too. Just hope they don't think pumpkin = allowed to knock 🤣

I'm thinking we may go out for food when darkness starts (by that I mean a McDonald's drive thru) to miss it all and dc won't feel like their missing out or anything!

why not carve an actual pumpkin and decorate as normal, if you do that - you can always put up a sign saying no trick or treating.

We'll be carving our usual pumpkins and decorating the house - no trick or treating, and hopefully it will be back next year

There is the problem there that in normal years"decorating your window" would be an indication that you are participating in trick or treat.
TweetUsOnFacebook · 25/09/2020 20:27

Mine are too old for T&T now but we usually put out a pumpkin and welcome visits from others. We won't be doing it this year, sadly. I just can't think of a way to do it safely. We'll have a family day at home like you op, and will give some treats to the food bank.

keeprocking · 25/09/2020 20:28

I knew that there had to be a good side of the pandemic, no pesky Halloween.

AllPlayedOut · 25/09/2020 20:28

They're called children.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 25/09/2020 20:30

There are several of dcs classmates living within a 2 min walk from our house. The class whatsapp has basically agreed we'll let them trick or treat each others houses (so kids they are in a bubble with anyway), but not others. I'll leave a bowl of (wrapped!) Sweets out for others with a sign asking them not to ring the bell. We did that in the past when we had babies in the house and it was respected with noone ringing.

Lolwhat · 25/09/2020 20:30

I won’t be opening my door to trick or treaters this year, sad but it’s just how it’s got to be, I will take part in the pumpkin hunt if our village do it

starrynight19 · 25/09/2020 20:34

It’s a very big thing here. We normally decorate the house and get involved even though mine have grown out of it.
However people travel to do it here so this year we won’t be taking part.
It’s a shame but also cannot see a way to do it safely either.

Theforest · 25/09/2020 20:35

Just do a mini Halloween extravaganza at home behind doors 😁. Kids will get it by now.

Oh yes they’re doing this in our area too!

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/09/2020 20:39

We are doing a pumpkin trail in our neighbourhood. I will be carving one but wont be opening my door to trick or treaters. I may hang some sweets from the tree (individual strings) if others are giving out sweets.

Rosebel · 25/09/2020 20:46

We're doing sweets, chocolate, decorations, costumes, takeaway and DVDs at home too.
I find trick or treating a drag and hate having to open the door again and again but usually I just get on with it for the children's sake but no way we'll be doing it this year.
Think it'll actually be more fun this year.

Honeyroar · 25/09/2020 20:54

If we’ve not locked down over Halloween, as rumours are suggesting. Our local outdoor café are thinking of doing life sized spooky figures and decorations and you can book a table per family and you get spooky kids boxes and drinks. Then there will be a costume competition and a pumpkin competition. Would that appeal to families, do you think as a safer alternative to trick or treating?

Blibbyblobby · 25/09/2020 21:00

DH has a plan to dress up as a mad scientist and give the kids bagged sweets from a bucket with tongs Grin

Distance maintained and no rummaging

Rockbird · 25/09/2020 21:32

My 12yo adores Halloween, it's her favourite part of the year and she's devastated about the lack of festivities this year. Next year she'll be too old to go out Sad. Am trying to think of ways to make it fun at home.

Tattoocrazymum · 25/09/2020 21:35

Im not taking my 9 year old out this year.
Were doing pumpkins, cakes and watching movies with treats

Don't take part then. Lots of people don't on normal years
