To think trick or treating is a complete no no!

Hi all, I love Halloween. I love taking dc trick or treating in our village. People are great here and it's always a big thing.

But.. I've already told dc it won't be happening this year due to obvious reasons. Can't see how it's safe and I assumed everyone would feel the same. So many children around here in a small place. People even travel here from surrounding areas. Too many to promise full social distancing. And giving our sweets with close contact isn't ideal. People have mentioned leaving in bowls outside but multiple hands in a bowl sounds hideous.

So yeah I've already told dc that it won't be happening assuming everything will think the same. Of course everyone can make their own decisions what they want to do.

The local village Facebook group has a new post about how so many kids still want to do and how to make it safe.

Maybe there is a way 🤷‍♀️

But aibu to think that it's probably not the best idea at all? And people should make fun in other ways.

We are planning decorations, sweets and chocolate at home, costumes and sweets at home plus Halloween movies. Maybe a take away in the evening.

I really don't want multiple children knocking on the door because I don't really want to answer over and over again! I usually love it but this year sounds like a nightmare!

Some grumpiness in here about Halloween Grin

Jakadaal · 25/09/2020 23:03

I will decorate and put a cauldron of wrapped lollies out by the front door then if we get any visitors they can help themselves

JustAddCoffee91 · 25/09/2020 23:28

I feel so sorry for little kids this year... mine are only 1&2 so they don't really understand yet but I feel really sorry for them, I'm just planning on doing some crafty bits with them and put the Halloween decorations up, if u get anyone knocking at the door I'll be handing individual packets of sweets through my kitchen window, I'll make sure my hands are sanitised and mask is on

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/09/2020 23:31

I think all the posters who usually complain about ToT are slightly at a loss as to what to bitch and whine about now @Thepilotlightsgoneout Grin

Can’t believe anyone is actually sad about the prospect of their germ encrusted offspring not getting free junk food off strangers 😄 get a grip, keep your little darlings inside your own house and hide junk food for them, or whatever it is parents find entertaining. No one wants them out touching our doors, thanks.

Well you would insist upon living in a gingerbread house.

DdraigGoch · 25/09/2020 23:59

@AllPlayedOut

What a bad idea..i won't be opening my door to superspreaders.

They're called children.

Same difference.
JustAddCoffee91 · 26/09/2020 00:00

@GarlicMcAtackney germ encrusted offspring?
Geez! No your right I wouldn't want them knocking on your door...

MaryShelley1818 · 26/09/2020 06:25

I think it would be beyond stupidity to take your kids trick or treating this year!

We have booked a Pick your own Pumpkin slot at a local farm, we're going to decorate the house, carve pumpkins, eat Halloween themed snacks, watch a movie and we've got a couple of Halloween books too.

dentydown · 26/09/2020 06:44

We have had someone posting on our local face book page that they aren’t doing Halloween decorations this year. They really go to town with holograms a walk way into a haunted dungeon, snake holding (donations to charity). Everyone understands.

Mintjulia · 26/09/2020 06:59

In our village, if you want to get involved in T or T then you tie an orange ballon to the door. It stops people who don't want to be disturbed from getting annoyed.

That would help. And then maybe create a treasure hunt for sweets in the front garden? Something like that might be safer?

Vortice · 26/09/2020 07:06

There is enough time for the government to pass legislation banning the sale of Halloween merchandise.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

ShinyGreenElephant · 26/09/2020 07:08

Actually crying at some of these answers Grin germ-encrusted offspring! Superspreaders! Calling the police on a 5 year old in a witches hat! Why is anyone on this site if they hate kids that much?

Davidsparkle · 26/09/2020 07:13

I like the idea of a sweets pegged to a spider web!
I’ve said dd can have a couple of friends round for an hour or so for Apple bobbing (individual buckets) etc. In the garden or in the conservatory if it’s raining.

DH will take da out on a pumpkin hunt.

As long as the tiles haven’t changed by then anyway.

TurnbabyTurn · 26/09/2020 08:02

@GarlicMcAtackney although your post made me giggle a bit, my DD isn't especially germ encrusted and I'm a little bit sad because she's tiny and was so happy and excited about it all last year and it's nice seeing her having so much fun. She doesn't really have sweets the rest of the year so not fussed on Halloween

Anyway I expect she'll love the pumpkin trail too

Rosebel · 26/09/2020 08:05

Every year we grow pumpkins and carve them but I'm wary this year. Putting a pumpkin out usually means trick or treating allowed here. So haven't made a decision yet.

Pelleas · 26/09/2020 08:10

Oooh, an upside to Coronavirus - we'll be spared door-to-door demanding money with menaces this year.

SuzieBishop · 26/09/2020 09:48

Another idea which my estate is doing - a Halloween word has been chosen so some houses have each taken a letter and we’re going to take the kids round to spot all the letters and spell out the word!

lughnasadh · 26/09/2020 10:48

We're just carrying on as normal.

The sweet bowl isn't ant more of a vector than stuff in the supermarket /school/public transport.

People can assess their own risk, they are not falling like skittles.

Corona really is 'the gift that keeps on giving' for the Professionally Miserable, isn't it?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/09/2020 11:24

Usually love handing out candy but not doing it this year. Too high a risk for me as we get a lot of people and mixing with that many can’t be good in the battle of stopping spread.

I was joking with DH about using one of those kids' fishing nets on long poles to hand out the sweets Grin. Seriously, we love Halloween & I'm thinking we could find some way of hanging individual bags of sweets off our front yard fence (metal, about 2ft high) for kids to help themselves.
JustAddCoffee91 · 26/09/2020 11:34

@SomewhereEast some people ehh!
I really think I've lost all faith in humanity after reading some of these miserable people's posts
.... the grinch is out early this year 😅

AdoptedBumpkin · 26/09/2020 11:38

I'm not planning to let DD go this year.
