Do you snack?

Just that really - on a daily basis I.e work days, do you snack in between meals?

I had got into bad habits during lockdown and whilst WFH. I’ve realised that it’s probably a lot better to have three satisfying meals of what I want (within reason) rather than restrict and end up snacking on ‘healthy’ things that probably make me hungrier. You can easily end up adding an extra 500 calories a day through snacks that aren’t really needed.

I haven’t really snacked at all for the last month and I think it’s made a real difference (as well as making sure I’m moving enough every single day!!) - when I start feeling peckish I have a drink and just make sure I have a nice meal to satisfy myself.

AIBU to think that the culture of ‘healthy snacks’ isn’t actually that great for most people (unless recovering from ED, other physical conditions etc!)

Interested to see whether most people do in fact snack every day and what these snacks are.

@DianaT1969

If people who habitually snack between meals were aware of the negative effect on their metabolism (attempts at weightloss) and general health by constantly spiking insulin and blood sugar levels, they really wouldn't do it.
I've lost over 20 kilo in last few months. My 2 snacks a day are obviously fine...
peakotter · 25/09/2020 16:14

Yes. With babies it’s necessary for and then I got into the habit.

But I’m not convinced it’s unhealthy in itself. It’s how our hunter gatherer ancestors ate. We eat far more fruit and raw veg by snacking on it. Just had a whole bag of carrots with the kids .

BobbinThreadbare123 · 25/09/2020 16:15

Depends how many snaccidents you have...

firesong · 25/09/2020 16:16

Sometimes. I don't have big meals during the day. The snacks I would usually have are fruit, but sometimes I fancy a chocolate bar or mini cheddars or something.

Enchantmentz · 25/09/2020 16:21

I don't habitually snack, I am quite sedentary atm who isn't atm and I eat a lot less because of it. Basically don't eat 3 meals a day unless I am planning on being active then I have homemade smoothie to start the day then eat accordingly. Have lost a few lb through being a little more active recently. Didn't gain any weight due to covid times.

Snacking for me is reserved for friday night treats with a bottle of wine.

IndiaMay · 25/09/2020 16:21

I snack. I'm not over weight but I tend to have breakfast, then lunch. Then a snack mid afternoon (small bag of popcorn/ biscuits with a tea/apple/cereal bar or something - so not very healthy). Then o have dinner around 7.30. 2 or 3 nights a week I have an excersise class 7.30-8.30 so I have a protein bar before that and then a smaller dinner at 9 when I'm homw

Whoopsies · 25/09/2020 16:34

No. I eat 3 meals a day, no snacking (except Saturdays!) I'm really hungry by the time my next meal rolls around, but I believe you should be. It's the only way to not worry too much about what I actually eat while staying slim!

Thenthatsthatthen · 25/09/2020 16:39

Yes! On a work day the first meal of the day for me is between 12-1pm, second around 4-6pm (depending on work-I work evenings, don’t usually finish until 2-3am), then if I’m working I don’t have time to eat a third meal on shift so I ‘snack’ instead-usually an Alpen bar, mini cheese (babybel, cathedral city mini etc) and 2 bits of fruit or veg over the course of the shift. I try to regulate my eating on non work days but usually it fails, but I usually just have the fruit or veg for an evening ‘snack’ on those days and skip the rest. I’ve been steadily loosing 1-2lb a week for the last few months though so I don’t think it’s hampering my weight loss to much.

JustCallMeGriffin · 25/09/2020 16:50

Not anymore. I don't have the willpower to be a snacker...I end up just eating all day.

I now have breakfast before I start work at 8am then dinner at 7pm. Nothing in between except drinks, varying between tea or water.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/09/2020 16:52

I don't snack on work days. To be honest, some days, I barely get time to eat my actual lunch let alone snack. The school I teach in only has 30mins for lunch so by the time I have let my class go, tidied up and set up the next lesson I don't have long. If a pupil or another teacher wants to talk to me, even less timeHmm It helps the waistline though Grin

I don't really snack at weekends either but I'm just not in the habit anymore. I used to and I gained quite a lot of weight but during lockdown I broke the habit, took up running and lost loads.

PivotPivott · 25/09/2020 16:52

I have proper meals but I'm always hungry so always snack. I'm just a greedy f**ker 😋.

lazylinguist · 25/09/2020 16:57

I try not to, but find it hard to resist. Between 3 and 4pm is my danger time. Tbh I'm not even properly hungry, it's just that that's the time I feel the call of the biscuit tin. I don't think it's ideal to snack even on healthy things.

Moo678 · 25/09/2020 17:02

Yes I snack. It’s probably why I’m a bit fat.

Teaandchocolatedigestives · 25/09/2020 17:04

Depends. Mostly no, just 3 decent, balanced meals a day. However there are days (usually around ovulation where my appetite ramps up) that need more so I eat more. I'm a healthy weight (actually lost too much last year and had to work to gain some back). I also know my body well enough to know the difference between boredom snacking and actual hunger signals. If it's the latter, I'll have something else but it's usually nuts, fruit, yoghurt, etc.

I have something sweet before bed most nights though (dark chocolate, hot chocolate, ice cream, etc)

UndertheCedartree · 25/09/2020 17:07

I snack everyday. I have a piece of fruit mid morning and then early evening I might have seeds, nuts or a naked bar or I might have a mini magnum, a couple of biscuits or a few squares of chocolate.

lljkk · 25/09/2020 17:07

If you set me up to fail, I will get so anxious about failure that I will inevitably deliberately fail to stop being anxious. It's my character defect. No rules are very much better than strict rules for me.

So anyway, I eat when I'm hungry which means I snack more than I have meals, tbh. It's fine for me. Never made me fat.

UndertheCedartree · 25/09/2020 17:07

If I want to have dessert after dinner I skip the evening snack.

Twigletfairy · 25/09/2020 17:10

I'm currently breastfeeding so do get quite hungry. So I have a snack when I first wake up so I can have a later breakfast. And then a snack late evening as I tend to have quite an early dinner with my children. My snack is always yogurt and fruit, maybe some granola if extra hungry

Desmondo2016 · 25/09/2020 17:10

No I'm not really a snacker. I don't ever really eat after dinner in the evening and rarely between meals in the day. If I do feel a bit peckish I have a handful of cashews or peanuts and a mug of coffee or a glass of water.

Kolsch · 25/09/2020 17:12

No, but only because I can't find anything to snack on.
I don't like chocolate or fruit, and anything with a fat content gives me terrible heartburn, such as biscuits, cake, crisps, ice cream and pastry.
I feel deprived ☹️

PicklePorkPie · 25/09/2020 17:13

I love a snack. Much more than a meal to be honest.

Nottherealslimshady · 25/09/2020 17:14

I graze, I think about food all day. Always have. Even when I was healthy and eating right and a good weight, I thought about my next meal even while eating my previous one.

PicklePorkPie · 25/09/2020 17:15

I'm not overweight though, just slightly underweight, so I don't really worry too much.
I tend to eat what I fancy.

CakeGirl2020 · 25/09/2020 17:16

Yes I snack pretty much everyday, at least once. I don’t do breakfast, lunch around 1pm then always a snack at some point in the afternoon, my dinner around 8-9pm.

Sometimes it’s an apple or banana, others it’s a 2 biscuits or bar of chocolate.

My arse isn’t huge so snacking isn’t a problem for my weight.

doadeer · 25/09/2020 17:38

No not really. I don't mind the feeling of hunger - it's natural. I wait until meal time to eat
