So fed up with the barking dog next door

New puppy beginning of April. Obviously had to give them some time for training and settling in.

But still there are multiple episodes of barking through the day, every day.

It's a male beagle. It's not just normal barking only, there's braying and pining a lot too.

Absolutely sick of it.

(Their head lease doesn't allow for pets as far as I'm aware, either!)

Have you knocked on their door and spoken about it? Are they at work when this happens?

ClaudiaWankleman · 24/09/2020 09:28

Why would you be aware of the intricacies of a lease and sub lease that you aren't party to?

stripeyd · 24/09/2020 09:29

I have spoken to them. It's so awkward though.

And then they send really apologetic messages with excuses as to why the barking is happening etc.

Doesn't change the fact that the dog continues to bark!

It's so hypocritical too because they used to always gossip about other neighbour's noise, even emailing their neighbours landlady!

Because our maisonettes are owned by the same manager, and we all have the same head lease.

I don't know the terms of their tenancy agreement, but their landlord will have the same head lease as us (we own).

I have the same issue and it really is soul destroying listening to barking all day. As they aren’t allowed pets anyway I’d be tempted to let the landlord know. Why should you have to put up with it when they’re breaking their contract anyway? In the meantime try dog whistle devices every time it barks or try and block it out with white noise. Dog owners who allow their dogs to bark continuously are selfish people and should be treated accordingly so don’t feel any guilt about acting on it.

stripeyd · 24/09/2020 09:38

It's so strange that they've allowed this to happen when they were previously so intolerant of other people!

They wrote to their neighbours landlady to complain that they weren't separating their recycling properly! Ridiculous!

How bad does it have to be before I can report to their landlady?

OP posts:
namechangetheworld · 24/09/2020 09:40

I'd report it to their landlord without a second thought.

Howzaboutye · 24/09/2020 09:41

We had this with inconsiderate neighbours. The whining and barking will get WORSE.
Poor dog and poor you.
It's awful

stripeyd · 24/09/2020 09:42

I feel so awful about reporting it! I know I should.

My husband won't like reporting either because it's so awkward!

Just wish they weren't such selfish arseholes in the first place.

Yes I feel bad for the dog too. Fairly big already, strong working dog and it's cooped up in a London two bed

Keep a log of date and times - it's tedious but you have to have evidence to substantiate your claim. Talk to the landlady, if they don't do anything raise to the council as they also deal with noise issues.

awsomer · 24/09/2020 09:46

What reasons are they giving for the barking? If it’s crying because they are out for instance then you could insist they take it to day care rather than leave it home alone.

ExclamationPerfume · 24/09/2020 09:50

You have my sympathy. My neighbours had a beagle. It whined and barked constantly apart from the 30 minutes the dog walker was there at lunchtime. I am a SAHM so in most of the day. It drove me mad. Luckily they moved out after 9 months.

DominaShantotto · 24/09/2020 09:50

You've got the route to report it and they've got a history of being knobs - I'd be reporting.

We don't have that option - there are two houses outback who live next to each other and both have howly yappy dogs and allow them to go at it for hours during the day. Neither are the sort to see reason if you ask nicely - you'll get sworn at to "stop making my dog bark" (by being in the rear of my own house).

TheWho67 · 24/09/2020 09:51

Complain to the landlord. They may have got temp permission and providing there are no complaints, this could be made permanent. I'm just going by someone I know in council rented property where no dogs are allowed but they applied and have been given permission.
Maybe record the noise from your house as evidence? Is it worse than crying babies/noisy kids/loud tv?
Agree it's tricky as they'll know who reported them and you still have to live there.

Previous reasons over the last few months:

~The heat is upsetting him.

~That they were doing a dog version of cry it out basically to try and stop future barking (this meant that for about an hour a day the dog would be put in the crate and left to bark solidly. Awful. The crate is on an adjoining wall with us.)

~That their upstairs neighbour is having some work done which will upset the dog. (I have some sympathy with this, but it's another reason why vocal dogs aren't best suited to London! Someone is always doing diy etc here!)

~That they're going out for the evening so the dog will bark because it's alone.

So all have a slight rationale but it doesn't change the fact that the barking is unacceptable!

Definitely worse than babies crying, which around here in Nappy Valley we hear a lot of, especially in summer. However, we are humans living in a human society and babies crying are just something we have to live with. Dogs barking just isn't the same imo.

It would be so awkward because they would just know it was us!

Howzaboutye · 24/09/2020 10:15

Record it barking. Keep a diary log of all the barking.
It is neglect of the dog and unacceptable for you.
Definitely tell the landlord/lady.

Imloosingmyshit · 24/09/2020 10:19

Aren’t beagles noisy anyway?? I can’t comment. My dog barks. I’ve tried sitting in him but that makes him squeal louder......WinkBlush

Luisa77 · 24/09/2020 10:20

We are getting a dog in a few weeks and I'm so worried about our neighbours. They were really upset when we told them. We will do our very best to train the dog properly and have even rethought where the puppy sleeps at night, so it's not adjacent to them, but I'm already feeling bad.

SmellsLikeFeet · 24/09/2020 10:27

Poor dog
Go round and tell them unless it stops you'll be contacting the LL
Own it, like you said, they'll know its you anyway, why be apologetic about it

It's really changed my opinion on ever getting a dog. Unless it's a quiet dog, but you can't tell that when you're buying one

Yes beagles are noisy dogs, a totally stupid and selfish choice for a London terrace!
OP posts:
Suzi888 · 24/09/2020 10:36

It’s a beagle... I think that’s what they do isn’t itHmm it’s an inherent trait.
I’ve got a lab who has barked about three times in his entire life and he’s 9.
Are they exercising the dog?

Scweltish · 24/09/2020 10:40

I’d report it ASAP op. It may take awhile before any action is taken so I’d get the ball rolling. I wouldn’t even feel bad about it if they’re already reporting their neighbours for every little thing. This isn’t fair on the dog being left distressed. I hate these idiots who get these type of dogs and stick it in a flat. What did they think was going to happen?
