So fed up with the barking dog next door

New puppy beginning of April. Obviously had to give them some time for training and settling in.

But still there are multiple episodes of barking through the day, every day.

It's a male beagle. It's not just normal barking only, there's braying and pining a lot too.

Absolutely sick of it.

(Their head lease doesn't allow for pets as far as I'm aware, either!)

I feel your pain. The lady across the road has a very vocal dog. Even more so recently. It barks at everything. Last night they left it outside for over an hour, the poor dog was yapping to be let in and they seemingly just ignored it, it’s driving me insane atm.

ComeOnGordon · 24/09/2020 10:47

You have all my sympathy. Our neighbours had a 4 year old barky dog when we moved in here and it lived till it was 14! I was so happy when it died. They would both do stuff out the house early on a Sunday morning and that dog barked on and off till they came back at lunchtime.
They instantly bought another dog but thankfully this one is much quieter

We moved in February but before that we were in a flat above a couple with a beagle. I'm a dog lover and I have a dog myself but I really struggled with the noise. About a year after they got her they cancelled the doggy day care she went to and she whined and howled from the moment they left. At the weekend they would go out and the dog would howl until they got home in the early hours.

Now we've moved away and there is a german shepherd which is left outside all day and its bark is SO deep and loud. It sets off every dog in the street and the owner does nothing apart from scream "shut the fuck up!" out the back door once or twice a day. Working from home has been... interesting Angry

I really think it should be made illegal my o leave dogs alone!!!

House joined to us - have 2 dogs that bark and whine most of the day while everyone is out. Before lockdown obviously we were also out at work and school so didn’t realise but since then it’s been everyday.

House other side of us (not joined) have 3 little yappy dogs, when they let them out into the garden they yap and bark constantly. If we go into our garden they instantly come to the fence and bark and bark.

House across the road (side on so thier back garden fence is opposite us) got a puppy last year and it barks and whines early in the morning.

Then somewhere down the street is someone with a load of dogs that periodically go crazy barking.

Funnily enough the neighbours diagonally across from us have 2 dogs and we never hear them barking. They are retired so home most of the time and I see them constantly taking the dogs for walks every day whereas I never see any of the other neighbours taking theirs!

We live rural in a street on the edge of a village so I dread to think how much barking there would be in a town completely surrounded by an estate!!!

DH has started logging all the barking and recording it as it’s getting ridiculous now.

Also
MIL has a lurcher type dog, it’s a rescue and it whines constantly when she is out so she can’t leave it alone

At work we are joined to a house and his dog whines all day when he goes out to work.

People need to realise that the dogs don’t do well left alone and need to factor that into thier decision to get a dog! I know some rescues won’t let you adopt one if you work all day.

@Suzi888

It’s a beagle... I think that’s what they do isn’t itHmm it’s an inherent trait. I’ve got a lab who has barked about three times in his entire life and he’s 9. Are they exercising the dog?
Same. I really wanted a beagle but in the end decided that they are just too vocal and prone to separation anxiety that they weren’t suitable for a London Terrace. Our lab did start barking when left alone initially after we had our baby but with the help of our neighbours (who let us know as he’d never done it before) we managed to get to the bottom of it and stop it. He’s been very quiet since. Won’t even bark when people he knows come to the door.

Exactly my point. Silly choice. Yes they go to the park with it, and probably elsewhere

Why would you worry that by reporting them they would know it was you? They're not worried about driving you mad everyday by their barking dog.

I would definitely report them, it's not fair on you and certainly not fair on the dog, it's obviously distressed.

SusanneLinder · 24/09/2020 11:01

I have 3 dogs, and I have trained them not to bark incessantly. Its actually fairly easy to do. They bark when someone comes to the door ( I want them to do that), but they stop on command.

I would suggest to your neighbour that if she should train her dog not to bark, and if she can't do it herself, she should get a qualified positive reinforcement trainer or behaviourist involved. If you have a dog, you take responsibility for its needs. And if she doesn't, then report to LL/Council.

Stripesgalore · 24/09/2020 11:06

I have never heard of ‘cry it out’ where you lock a dog in a crate to teach it to stop whining. That just sounds cruel and bizarre.

Dogs should bark if someone comes to the door or enters the house. Their dog sounds as if it makes a lot of noise because it is miserable and they don’t know how to care for a dog.

stripeyd · 24/09/2020 11:07

I'm sure they're trying but they're failing!

Poor dog.

I own a couple of dogs and waited until the time and location was right, but would never have owned a dog when I lived in such close proximity to my neighbours in London, it's pretty inconsiderate.

@Luisa77
We are getting a dog in a few weeks and I'm so worried about our neighbours. They were really upset when we told them. We will do our very best to train the dog properly and have even rethought where the puppy sleeps at night, so it's not adjacent to them, but I'm already feeling bad

As long as you train the dog properly, give it plenty of exercise and don't leave it all day long, then you don't have anything to worry about. As I said, I have dogs, they don't bark a lot (despite being a breed known for being a bit 'barky), they are well behaved, I don't have any issues with my neighbours because I'm considerate, that's all that matters in these circs. Just don't leave your dog to bark out for prolonged periods of time. A bit of barking now and then is totally normal and your neighbours will have to deal with that.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 24/09/2020 11:50

Report them to the landlord. They've had long enough to sort it.

Luisa77 · 24/09/2020 12:36

Yes, @SurreyHillsGirl you are right. We are very mindful of it so hopefully we can limit any issues

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 24/09/2020 12:54

Record it and play it back to them through the walls.
