Could save most of the economy if he thinks up a plan similar to extending furlough ?

OP posts:
WestTen · 23/09/2020 09:07

But as a country, we can't afford it.

pepsicolagirl · 23/09/2020 09:08

Fo you honestly think extending furlough is something he hasn't considered?

TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 09:09

I meant along the lines of that.
I think if he came up with a good plan, many jobs could be saved just in time.

In other news- the ground gets wet when it rains.

mediumperiperi · 23/09/2020 09:12

If there was an easy way to save jobs he would have done it- he's a politician so motivated by personal popularity.

Extending furlough is not the answer. Some industries won't be able to start making income for another 6-12 months

MustShowDH · 23/09/2020 09:13

Furlough is abused by companies and we can't afford it. Better to save the money to support anyone that does lose their job.
The country is going to be paying for this for years to come and some people are in for a very rough ride. I hope there will be money left in the pot to help people that need it rather than just throwing money at the initial problem.

mediumperiperi · 23/09/2020 09:14

People are now talking about EOTHO in the same breath as the increase in CV when during August everybody was thanking him.

contrmary · 23/09/2020 09:14

So basically you want him to come up with a plan that has the benefits of the furlough scheme but without the cost. I'm sure the government would be open to suggestions on how to achieve this.

Bloomburger · 23/09/2020 09:14

A tree that grows money perhaps????

userxx · 23/09/2020 09:17

For how long do you think it should be extended?

TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 09:18

I think he will extend it to the industries who need it most such as hospitality and leisure. Not furlough as we know it now but similar.

OP posts:
JaJaDingDong · 23/09/2020 09:18

Well of course he could save the economy with a "good plan", if such a plan exists. I expect he's trying very hard, but there's always going to be a trade off between the economy and lives.

It's circular: to save lives we need to bugger up the economy. But buggering up the economy will affect many more lives in the long run than Covid will in the short term. Therefore we need to protect the economy. But that will mean more infections, deaths, and people with an ongoing, life-affecting condition, in the short term, which isn't good either.

For all his posturing, I really don't see how Kier Starmer and the Labour Party could do any better a job at this than Boris and his gang. Everyone, everywhere, is shooting in the dark.

Yes. Anyone who comes up with a good plan can save the economy. Do you have one to suggest to Rishi?
TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 09:25

That's what he is working on so I wouldn't be surprised if a last minute announcement came up before furlogh ends.

OP posts:
TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 09:31

Just read in 'City AM' that he is considering a wage subsidiary scheme similar to the Germany scheme. This could help so many businesses and individuals.

TabbyStar · 23/09/2020 09:43

After saying at the beginning that no one will be left behind he's been saying to the 3m of us excluded from support that "not everyone can be helped" so he's not quite as keen as the original promises would indicate.

SomewhereEast · 23/09/2020 10:01

I think ultimately we have to accept that we can have a functioning society & economy, or we can very low rates of Covid, but we can't have both. I do hope furlough is extended for sectors which really can't hope to reopen in any way over the next six months, and I hope UC might be improved, but I also think we need to accept that there are trade offs and hard choices and no magic solutions. Part of me thinks that things like furlough do need to end simply because people need to realise there ARE actually hard choices, rather than thinking we can kick the can down the road for the next generation to deal with via astronomical borrowing as if the next generation haven't been screwed over enough already in all this Right now it feels as if people want the Gov to shut the economy down Cos Covid, but also somehow want no one to lose their jobs or houses or businesses, which is basically just magical thinking.

And I've never voted Tory in my life, so I've no desire to defend the Gov on this one. I just don't think there's an infinite supply of money out there.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 23/09/2020 10:16

We can afford it as a country, it would meen super-rich entities actually using some of their vast wealth that we have helped fund and actually do something with it. And that the Government makes every company making use of our infrastructure pay their godamn taxes.

After all, what's so special about being super-rich when you are a corpse?

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/09/2020 10:16

The government are in a tricky situation here, if they extend furlough it gives a sense of hope that things may get better in X number of months or however long it’s extended by. If they choose not to extend it then I think it should be a clear indication that they don’t expect any reasonable normalisation in the mid term. Perhaps a basic income for all is what they will do?

TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 10:38

I'm sure they will provide support in some form which will save hundreds of jobs and businesses. They won't just do nothing.

OP posts:
sst1234 · 23/09/2020 10:40

OP is there more you want to add to your question? Not sure what your point is. Of course, things would happen if things could be done, or something like that.

TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 10:46

Just saying there is some hope for people in these industries

OP posts:
TabbyStar · 23/09/2020 10:52

That's exactly what they have done for an estimated 3m of us who have slipped through the net - nothing, or told us to get into debt. It's now coming to more people. People have lost their businesses and homes already but Rishi has just said, yes but look we provided amazing support to all these other people. There is huge pressure in the House to support us - the largest All Party Parliamentary Group of all time and a Treasury Select Committee report, but Rishi doesn't give a shit.

Ihatefish · 23/09/2020 10:53

If only Dumbledore hadn’t destroyed the philosophers stone Rishi could have used that to make gold. Anyone know any alchemists who could rustle one up?

TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 10:56

Of course some businesses have already gone under and many have lost their jobs but there is still hope for some when furlough ends.
