Could save most of the economy if he thinks up a plan similar to extending furlough ?

I think we need to accept that a lot of jobs are going to go and it would be better to focus on supporting those individuals through increasing UC than extending furlough, which is being abused by employers. Those who lose their jobs can then focus on looking for different work, rather than being left in limbo indefinitely.

Yes there is something that could be done. End this madness of lockdown after lockdown. For an infection with a death rate of less then 1%, the reaction is imply hysterical.

TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 13:07

I think a lot of jobs will now stay. Very promising what Sunak is set to propose to replace furlough.

You mean the person who helped spread the virus by the Eat Out to Help Out, meaning people sat in crowded fast food places instead of having takeaways?

DemolitionBarbie · 23/09/2020 13:24

@WestTen on what basis can't we afford it?

You either pay towards wages for another six months or whatever, or face losses for the state in the form of paying benefits, lost income tax and business tax, VAT etc. If whole areas lose a lot of their employers, the cost to the state long term (as well as the horrific human cost) is much more.

Besides which, there was money for the fricking bankers.

ChaChaCha2012 · 23/09/2020 13:24

Anybody watch PMQ? He just kept going on about creative ideas, usual waffle and zero substance. He was asked about continuing with the Universal Credit increase and provided no answer.

I hope they announce something. But at this time it's clear they have no idea what that something might be.

notdaddycool · 23/09/2020 13:25

I think keeping viable jobs going and keeping people attached to their jobs for a few months makes sense. But we also can’t afford to do it indefinitely and shouldn’t keep people attached to jobs that may never come back. Also I think 3 times more people took furlough than they forecast initially, I know several where they wouldn’t have been made redundant without it but were put on it indefinitely. There were also lots of people who furlough missed, it’s really tricky to see how it can work but I hope they come up with something that retains viable jobs.

CremeEggThief · 23/09/2020 13:25

Tax the rich I say. There are several multi-millionaire in this country who could easily pay more for those who are in need.

ChaChaCha2012 · 23/09/2020 13:26

And there's still money for endless outsourcing that produces nothing. Track and trace app anyone?

Heffalooomia · 23/09/2020 13:36

We need to accept that some businesses are no longer viable
keeping them on life support is counterproductive if ultimately they are not viable

I agree but the people with the wealth and power use their wealth and power to protect their wealth and power
Tootletum · 23/09/2020 13:39

No idea. I'd do him thoughGrin

Heffalooomia · 23/09/2020 13:41

Ewwww

Heyahun · 23/09/2020 13:44

How do you know @WestTen

Dutypaid · 23/09/2020 14:33

Sst1234 ....don't forget that if there are too many people sick at the same time, then that screws with the economy long term too. There becomes a point when lockdowns help the economy.

In what way would I "save" my family budget by quitting my job and taking out a big loan so I could continue spending at the same level - and much, much more? 🤔

That's what you're suggesting, but at a national level. Much less tax income with much more spending on furlough. It's total madness and would send the country broke, risking failed statehood. It's a no from me.

FusionChefGeoff · 23/09/2020 14:48

Is this a bot post!? It makes no sense and repeats a circular logic that is making my head hurt.

linerforlife · 23/09/2020 14:57

Yes I'm sure he could save the economy if he "came up with a good plan". Scientist could cure cancer if they "came up with a cure". I could be a millionaire if I "came up with a good idea".

CremeEggThief · 23/09/2020 15:08

@Heffalooomia, indeed. Unfortunately.

TheBeatGoesOn · 23/09/2020 15:26

Well it looks like it is going ahead. Allowing workers back part time and topping up their wages for the next year.
Pleased for people in those positions but can't help but feel a bit envious myself that I didn't get the choice of that. Already been made redundant.

userxx · 23/09/2020 15:56

@TheBeatGoesOn Where does it say furlough will be extended ?
