Gove warns this could happen.
And it's only 3 months away.

We have people who will be WFH now - which will make all this planning even more difficult. Rising infections which will impact on any workforce planning.

AIBU to think that this is going to be a major fuck up during the first few months of next year?

Just when you think these clowns in the UK government couldn't possibly embarrass themselves any further... they come up with this!

I don't know whether to cripple myself laughing, or curl up in the foetal position.

CalmYoBadSelf · 23/09/2020 19:13

Gove says this is instructing hauliers to get ready to minimise this. It's shit but was warned about ages ago
I can't help thinking that if people had put the energy and talent into making this work that they put into trying to block the referendum result we'd be in a far better place

You don't think that the onus to actually carry out a viable Brexit lies rather more with the people who were advocating for it, and telling anyone who would listen how wonderful it was going to be?

It's symptomatic of the fact that the pro-Brexit lobby didn't have the first clue how to actually go about withdrawing the UK from the EU in an orderly manner, and in the time since, their own intransigence/incompetence has meant that they're been singularly incapable of coming up with any plan to facilitate this, despite having over four years to deal with the matter.

Control of this entire process has rested in the hands of pro-Brexiteers right from the moment David Cameron resigned as PM, so I'm not sure how it can be claimed that the reason it's an absolute shambles is down to Remain opposition, and politicians ensuring the government of the day were compelled to act within the law.

So it is up to the people who voted Remain and were pissed off with the outcome who should have thought up solutions to all the problems they predicted. That makes perfect sense 😂. .
Neolara · 23/09/2020 19:29

My (remain voting) parents live near Dover. They are very cross at the prospect of living in a lorry park. Its going to make getting around total nightmare.

chliing19 · 23/09/2020 19:30

Best get stocked up

annabel85 · 23/09/2020 19:32

Not ideal but then people voted for it. Get Brexit Done. This is the reality of that.

randomchap · 23/09/2020 19:35

Irish HGVs heading for France will be exempt as, as intra-EU transport, they don't need any paperwork at Dover.

chomalungma · 23/09/2020 19:35

In other news, the 'ferry' company which got a £13 million contract to take goods across the Channel from the Government has gone bankrupt. It didn't have any ferries.

Luckily it didn't get any public money .It owes creditors £2 million - and HMRC are owed £100.

chomalungma · 23/09/2020 19:36

What about foreign lorries?
I guess this has all been sorted with the EU haulage companies?

Where's Clavinova? Busy with the cut and paste ready to explain to us fools that it's not going to happen. She'll be very surprised having spent so much time on here denying this prospect over the last couple of years.

weepingwillow22 · 23/09/2020 19:38

Yes, 20% increase in food prices predicted as a result of no deal and food and medicine shortages to look forward to on top on covid. Thanks tories and those who voted for you.

bellinisurge · 23/09/2020 19:40

They are punting the idea of blaming the inevitable chaos on the EU for not being prepared at their side of the border.
Tragic thing is that some dozy fuckers will fall for it.

borntobequiet · 23/09/2020 19:42

Anyone surprised by this hasn’t been paying attention for the last four years. Attempts to blame opponents of Brexit are risible. Who engineered this catastrophe and is now in charge? Duh.

randomchap · 23/09/2020 19:45

There's also the problem that the UK needs far more ECMT permits than the EU are currently issuing. Without these permits, UK hauliers cannot operate in the EU.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 23/09/2020 19:55

So what is the plan for Aberdeen, Rosyth, Hull, Hartlepool etc? "hard borders" around the ports themselves?

Settleandcalm · 23/09/2020 22:37

Dover is predicting 5 day qs.

And it’s ok to say they can’t get access without a permit but like I said, they haven’t said when the permits will be, they haven’t sorted out labelling. You can’t ship products without an origin label and what is it to be EU? UK? What?

Even if we get a deal there will be a friction at the border. It’s not going to end well.

And I’m not a remainer or a leaver, just a pragmatist!

goose1964 · 23/09/2020 22:46

I read an interesting article today, can't remember the name of the publication which looked at the side effects of this. They've interviewed people in Kent some of whom voted leave, others remain and they all had one question. How am I go into to be able to go about my daily business as most of th e roads will be full of lorries. I think the government hope someone can come up with a transporter beam so they can fill these lorry parks without bringing transportation in Kent to a standstill.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 23/09/2020 22:55

Labels are the tip of the iceberg.

Are they seriously expecting police to monitor 380 miles of county border? Where are the HMRC staff to manage and facilitate this? Is the software in place to manage this 'permit' system? How are disputes and discrepancies to be handled and who is the ultimate arbitrer? Is the UK government going to be paying compensation to the owners of spoiled goods ruined by being held up by utterly dysfunctional UK bureaucracy?

To suggest they've come up with this on the back of a fag packet is giving them too much credit.

jakeyboy1 · 23/09/2020 23:08

We haven't been able to check who's coming into Kent for bloody years from ferries, are they really going to start now? Or just pretend they are and cause chaos?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 23/09/2020 23:29

"Project fear" has become project we told you so.
Its telling that the previously vocal pro brexit posters on here and elsewhere have gone very quiet now.

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 23/09/2020 23:44

Is anyone else hopeful that Gove actually admitting for once that Brexit is going to be a shit show instead of the ‘project fear’ gaslighting we’ve had for four years is to help sell a FTA capitulation and hopefully long implementation period to leave voters?

And to the poster who’s blaming all this on remainers, please fuck off. How do you expect hauliers to prepare for something when government have provided no guidance or clarity on how the border will work, the future trade relationship with EU, not enough permits, not enough heat treated pallets, or even got the necessary IT systems up and running. France have had theirs ready for a year. This is all on you.

CherryPavlova · 23/09/2020 23:49

Funniest thing ever Farage locking himself into a Kentxit state with a traffic jam border between that and rest of U.K.
Sweet karma.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/09/2020 05:01

What's to stop all the British lorries being registered in Ireland?

After all, just about all ships are registered in places like the Philippines to avoid UK/European tax and employment laws.
