To take DS to the Zoo on day 13 of isolation?

coffeeforone · 22/09/2020 21:00

DS's nursery closed from last Monday as they had a positive Covid case. Nursery reopens on Monday after 14 days. We have obviously kept DS at home since as per guidelines and he is on day 9 of isolation. Saturday will be day 13 and is also his 2nd Birthday. We had booked tickets for Chester Zoo and his older sibling was very excited to go. DS has been totally fine thought out and shown no symptoms, we are all fine too. Should we cancel the zoo trip or go ahead?

@Mamawell81

13 days and no symptoms? He defo doesn't have it. Why don't you get a test incase and then go if it's neg?
Please tell me you are joking!

National shortage of tests meaning people with actual symptoms can’t get tested, or families with a child who had a temperature for one day all have to stay off school/ work for 2 weeks.... but let’s see if we can get a test so we can go to the zoo!!

RockPaperScissorLizardSpock · 22/09/2020 22:25

Mamawell81 you can’t have a test unless you have any of the three symptoms! This is why we are short of tests because people are requesting them willy nilly.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 22/09/2020 22:29

@Mamawell81
He's on day 9. It says. Saturday is day 13.
And, if you have no symptoms, you are not supposed to test.
If people are testing asymptomatic 2 year olds so they can go to the zoo it is unsurprising that adults who are actually unwell, who are missing work, cannot.

Anyway the OP has decided she is more socially responsible than you already thank goodness

dementedpixie · 22/09/2020 22:31

OP is counting from the day the nursery closed. If the contact was before that date then the 14 days may already be completed by the weekend

RedCatBlueCat · 22/09/2020 22:32

Was he at nursery on Monday? Or has he not seen the child with the positive result since Friday?
If the Friday, go at the weekend, you've done the 14 days since last contact.
If both kids were at nursery on Monday, please cancel the tickets. Its 14 days for a reason.

SacreBleeurgh · 22/09/2020 22:36

@Mamawell81 and @Sweettea1 doing a sterling job of demonstrating why we’re in this absolute fucking mess in the first place...

Bore off 🙄

coffeeforone · 22/09/2020 22:44

Was you child at nursery with the infected child last Monday 14th?

Not with the infected child on the Monday (test came back positive late morning on Monday and they asked us to pickup and closed within and hour). but he was with other children/staff and they'd all been in v close contact with the child on Friday 11th, who went home with symptoms on the Friday and got a positive test back on the Monday morning.

So i back have miscounted - is it 14 days from sat 12th? Nursery said 14 days from Monday 14th.

OP posts:
coffeeforone · 22/09/2020 22:47

We haven't been tested because none of us have symptoms

dementedpixie · 22/09/2020 22:47

If his last contact with the infected child was Friday then that's when you count isolation from

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 22/09/2020 22:54

@coffeeforone technically you could be in the clear by Saturday?

@Mamawell81 oh god yeah, not being a selfish arse is so boring right

TVWife · 22/09/2020 23:00

Self isolation ends 14 days after contact with confirmed case not 14 days after nursery closed. Saturday will be 15 days - go and enjoy a day out.

Quaagars · 22/09/2020 23:03

Of course you'd be unreasonable! JFC, I'm not paranoid about the virus and go about my daily business but some of these questions and answers piss me off.
If it's a 14 day isolation, how is 13 and go to the zoo OK?!
I mean, whut?!
No wonder we're in tighter measures when people are doing what they like or trying to justify, I despair!

coffeeforone · 22/09/2020 23:07

Thanks all! I'm actually so pleased I asked nowSmile, it makes sense and it looks like Friday will be day 14 so we are clear to go on Saturday! I think I've just linked in my head the nursery closure with the isolation period starting!

How is his eyesight? Perhaps it needs testing.....

Generallybewildered · 23/09/2020 06:46

Yes, it’s 14 days from last contact with positive case. So enjoy your day. Smile

Thefaceofboe · 23/09/2020 07:21

I agree OP shouldn’t go till the 14 days is up but..

Imagine how many people would be infected if you did go and he had it

Realistically, probably no one Hmm a zoo is outdoors and how close to you get to other people’s children? I know I don’t

solidaritea · 23/09/2020 07:22

@Mamawell81

Utterly irresponsible.

Tests are for those who need them, not who want to see elephants.

You can develop symptoms after 14 days. And 50% of children who do catch it have now symptoms.

OP has decided not to go until after isolation. Thus is the right call.

solidaritea · 23/09/2020 07:24

Oh, I'm wrong, OP is going, but for actual reasons. Have fun Grin

Champagneforeveryone · 23/09/2020 07:29

Because tests are for people with symptoms, not people who fancy a day at the zoo before their isolation is over.

This is precisely why people are struggling to get a test Hmm

Ah yes, why not lie about having symptoms in order to get a test that’s in so short supply not even people with actual symptoms can get one? What an amazing idea!

awesomeaircraft · 23/09/2020 08:27

OP - good choice on changing the tickets to another week!

To answer your 10 vs 14 day confusion, it is indeed 10 days isolation for a person who tested positive to COVID if their symptoms have all gone by then. The assumption there is that by the time they got tested, they have been through asymptomatic incubation and appearance of symptoms so they are ahead on their 14 days already.

The rest of the household or close contacts have not gone through their asymptomatic incubation nor the appearance of symptoms, so they have to wait 14 days.

In effect in my household, my teen will be out before me!

awesomeaircraft · 23/09/2020 08:29

And very annoyingly, like @DaphneFanshaw experienced, the asymptomatic incubation period can last over 14 days for some and as short as 1 day for others.

We all metabolise the virus in different ways.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 23/09/2020 08:41

Sweettea1's attitude is the kind of 'I'm alright, fuck everyone else' attitude that makes this a right shit world to live in at times.
