Is there anyone out there who has a toddler that lies in

Babysleep1302 · 22/09/2020 20:44

My toddler (16 months) sleeps 7pm till 10-11am they sometimes play for 30 mins at 7am and will doze right off again. Has been doing this for a month. All my friends are really shocked, is this quite unusual?

I’d say he’s unique! Has he always done this or is it something new?

EwwDavid · 22/09/2020 20:49

My DS did the same thing at around the same age, I think it was a growth spurt.

But even so, in normal circumstances he sleeps until around 7.30-8am. So far he’s dodged the whole toddler waking up at 5am thing, which I am very grateful for!

riotlady · 22/09/2020 20:49

Yeah, when I first saw the thread title I was like "ooh, mine sleeps til 8!" which I think of as a lie-in by toddler standards. I've never heard of any sleeping 7pm-10am. Does he nap at all?

EatDessertFirst · 22/09/2020 20:50

I remember a thread where a mum said something similar. A lot of posters said she was lucky but others were mulling over the fact that that is A LOT of sleep and fitting meals/activities into just 8/9 hours a day must be difficult/unhealthy. Not sure about the outcome.

Personally, that doesn't seem normal to me. My DC were having 10-11.5 hours average a night 7.30-6 (ish) and an hours nap after lunch.

Maybe asking a GP or HV would be better? You'll get a wide ramge of opinions and not many answers here.

Fast90 · 22/09/2020 20:50

Hmm, yes extremely rare. Have you noticed any other changes in behaviour, co ordination etc?

LilaButterfly · 22/09/2020 20:50

Mine both did this. I had to start waking them when they started preschool and they actually started napping again in the afternoon at that time Grin
DS is 6 now, just stopped napping a few months ago. Still sleeps in on weekends. DD is 4.5 and still naps whenever she can.
Unfortunately their body adjusted and they no longer sleep in on days off Sad

Was a terrible sleeper untill 11 months. But this is new & has lasted a month. Prior to that sleep was sleeping through 7pm - 7/8am

Hahaha

DontTouchTheMoustache · 22/09/2020 20:54

I'm lucky DS has always liked a lie in but its biting me on the arse now that he has started school this month and I have to drag him out of bed 🤦‍♀️

DustyMaiden · 22/09/2020 20:56

My DS would do that. He has Aspergers, don’t know if it’s linked.

Babysleep1302 · 22/09/2020 20:56

I’ve definitely done my fair share of 5am wakes before they turned 11 months @EwwDavid I do not miss it 😂 maybe it is a growth spurt? Hopefully if it changes it won’t go back to any earlier than 8am 🙈

I’ve always had early risers so aside from being a bit jealous of a 10am sleeper I think I would probably get that checked with a doctor... 15 hours sleep is surely a bit concerning?

cazinge · 22/09/2020 20:58

Mine dropped his nap at 1y 10mo so sleeps 6.30pm to 7am/7.30am now, sometimes 8am but I do think yours is unusual.

HAB86 · 22/09/2020 20:59

Mine went through a stage of sleeping 8pm - 9-10am plus a 2-3hr nap in the afternoon at about 18mths old.
Even now he rarely gets up before 8am. I have a friend who’s little girl has always slept late too. Some just need more sleep!

StraffeHendrik · 22/09/2020 20:59

Urgh dc1 sometimes did this but dc2 has ruined it by being an early waker :-(

Babysleep1302 · 22/09/2020 21:00

I haven’t noticed anything strange in behaviour seems to be reaching milestones fine. I have asked a health visitor they said as long as drinks enough it’s ok and they do eat and drink loads.

Also has a 1-2 hour nap in the after noon

Mine used to. She was also a fan of a nap on a weekend until she was 8 or 9. Now she's a teenager she can easily sleep until 3pm after going to bed at 10. I'm the same. Sleeping is our superpower.

Babysleep1302 · 22/09/2020 21:03

@HAB86 brilliant that’s really helpful ! Mine does seem to love sleeping, gets excited going in the cot. Hopefully I’m just lucky then & doesn’t seem like has any health issues.

My DD was a terrible sleeper. Once we finally cracked sleep about 14 months she had a month or so of lying in (not quite as late as yours, maybe 9-9.30am) before it gradually got earlier. It eventually settled around 6.30-7, and 2 years later it is usually about that still. I assumed the period of lying in was catching up from all the months of terrible sleep - she was probably exhausted! Yours is sleeping a lot though, so maybe speak to GP for peace of mind?

Mine is the same, he asks to go to bed and is quite happy to go down for sleeps.

I’m currently pregnant with DC2 and hoping this won’t come to bite me on the bum with them! Grin

Killpopp · 22/09/2020 21:07

Mine have all been great sleepers. When left they will all sleep till about 9. Great when they’re little, not so great when they start school!

My husband and I are early risers and we get up about 5am. It’s lovely having a few hours to ourselves in the mornings.

TheGriffle · 22/09/2020 21:10

So they wake up at 10 have say 3 hours of play, sleep till 3 then have another 3 hours or so of play? That’s not a lot of awake time at all.

Although I am jealous. Dd who’s 3 had a lay in this morning. Woke us up at half 7!

TheGriffle · 22/09/2020 21:12

How do they fit food into the day? Are you stuck at home all the time due to their sleep patterns?

LittleRen · 22/09/2020 21:20

Two of my three did this from a few months old, it was amazing for those first few years. My friends hated me with their lack of sleep when we were able to sleep in. It soon changed when they started pre school and school... my middle child would still sleep in now but my oldest is up at the crack of dawn. Our third can sleep in if there is no noise... it’s genetic I think!

The nap is a little odd though especially at 16 months - mine tried to nap but it was always mid late afternoon. Every child is different though!
