Will I have to cancel my holiday?

I have a trip planned to Cyprus this weekend for our anniversary. First holiday in several years. I’m worried with the way the U.K. is heading it could become tricky for us to go? We will be having the grandparents staying over to look after the kids for us. I’m worried that there will be a lockdown and they won’t be able to stay. Does anyone think that’s likely? If that happens I guess I will lose all the money I paid for my holiday? Sad

I think it’s a case of anything could happen. Personally I wouldn’t be travelling abroad unless I was in a position to be able to quarantine for the two weeks when I get back.

Ladylimpet · 21/09/2020 11:32

Yep. Things happen on a daily basis, especially if the numbers keep going up!

emilyfrost · 21/09/2020 11:33

It would be very silly to go abroad now, but if you’re going, I hope you won’t expect any help if you get stranded or come into any other problems since it was your choice to go on holiday during a pandemic.

Landladymews · 21/09/2020 11:33

Quarantining isn’t an issue we can both do that.

Cyprus is also low risk and you have to have a negative test in order to enter the country

I'm due to go to Turkey on 3rd Oct and hoping the same thing. Who knows. If you're booked with a reputable tour operator they should be cancelling and providing you with a refund if the trip is not able to go ahead. But like others have said, be aware that there is a risk you will have to quarantine when you get back.

Stirmecrazy · 21/09/2020 11:35

Fingers crossed you get there . I am abroad at the moment and loving getting away from the Uk madness which seems to exist at the moment. Don’t forget you will need a negative Covid test before travel

LagunaBubbles · 21/09/2020 11:36

I think you are crazy for even thinking of going abroad.

Palavah · 21/09/2020 11:36

Wait until Boris announcement tomorrow, otherwise you're just speculating

Landladymews · 21/09/2020 11:36

I’ve booked myself online not through an operator.

I have travel insurance through work but I’m guessing the insurers aren’t covering this sort of thing

Some are, some aren't. Check your policy.

OhCaptain · 21/09/2020 11:37

I don’t think it’s worth booking anything this year. It’s too risky for several reasons!

AlternativePerspective · 21/09/2020 11:38

It was a bad idea to book a holiday in the first place, unless the holiday was booked pre COVID.

Agree with PP though,if you get stuck there I hope you don’t expect the government to bail you out.

It seems to be highly expected that households wil be prevented from mixing here anyway, so on that basis alone I would cancel. Also, given your parents will be with your children while you’re on holiday, you need to question whether you’ll be able to get them back if households can’t mix, given they’ll then be part of a different household, and at the very least you won’t be able to get them back while you quarantine.

Stirmecrazy · 21/09/2020 11:38

Also just to add we were originally going to Portugal but having booked with TUI we easily moved our holiday at the last minute and they offer Covid insurance so will pay all medical expenses if you were unlucky to contract Covid or need to isolate (Not that I have tested this out!)

AdoreTheBeach · 21/09/2020 11:38

Really? There’s a pandemic going on. For months there have been travel restrictions and lock down. You plan a holiday abroad AND get grandparents to watch the kids and only NOW you worry? Really?

Is it any wonder the rate of infection just keeps going up again.

FelicityPike · 21/09/2020 11:39

Sorry but I think it’s crazy to be considering going abroad.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 21/09/2020 11:41

Hope you’re paying privately for your covid test and not taking resources from those with symptoms

cherryblossommorningstoday · 21/09/2020 11:43

Did you book a private COVID test?

TheDuchessofMalfy · 21/09/2020 11:44

I was going to say the same re test - hope you paid privately!

In answer to your OP - we just can’t know!

Landladymews · 21/09/2020 11:44

Yes it’s a private test and the holiday was booked much earlier. Have several friends who have been abroad in the last few weeks. The noise about tighter restrictions has only started now which is getting me worried.

What if you become ill whilst you are there and have to quarantine, overseas, away from your children until you no longer test positive? There are some young British teachers who have been stuck out in Italy for weeks because they are still testing positive.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 21/09/2020 11:48

Please stop scaremongering the poor OP. Lots of people have been on holiday and not had problems. It can be done if you are sensible. Cyprus infection rates are low.

I hope you get your holiday OP.

Stirmecrazy · 21/09/2020 11:49

Also for those who say you are mad to go away. This is the best decision I have made all year . I feel so much safer here in Rhodes . My mental health has massively improved just from being in a different space after WFH for 6 months and the future months Ahead . I have booked an online Food shop for my return and will self isolate myself although not needed for 10 days on my return just to be socially responsible (no children so no school runs etc so not a lot of reason to leave the house beyond social reasons anyway). Also I believe we should be supporting the travel industry and holidaying in the UK was looking equally problematic with localised lockdowns, going abroad seemed and has been to date no more risky. I think though you have to be flexible with dates and locations due to the travel corridor restrictions. And for all those worried about the elderly vulnerable don’t they are all in my hotel at the moment!

Friendsoftheearth · 21/09/2020 11:52

I wouldn't consider going overseas now, too much is changing too quickly.

Friendsoftheearth · 21/09/2020 11:57

Double check your insurance.

You need to have full medical cover for falling ill from covid (ICU care is notoriously expensive and medically assisted flights home) , but also cover should the area or country you are in lock down with very little notice, to cover the expenses of having an extended stay and new flights etc. I would leave nothing to chance.

Due to the risks of air travel you need to also consider those at risk on your return, even if quarantine is not required.

Landladymews · 21/09/2020 12:00

Just checked BA and it seems you can get a travel voucher if you decide to cancel tickets. I think I should also be able to cancel the hotel. The only thing I would lose out on is the private Covid test which is already booked and won’t refund so although it’s £300 it’s not too bad. I guess I’ll wait and see what happens tomorrow before cancelling anything.
