To ask for some urgent cheddar advice

We’re about an hour away from cheddar gorge and Not sure where to stop for lunch

I’ve got an energetic 2 year old who needs lunch but also maybe somewhere with a garden and grass?

A lot of places on trip advisor just have stone wall terraces

OP posts:
Kitsmummy · 21/09/2020 12:09

The Swan in Wedmore. 10 mins from Cheddar (much nicer than Cheddar) and they have a large garden, you should be able to get in there for lunch

AriettyHomily · 21/09/2020 12:09

Cornish cruncher is the best.

PawPawNoodle · 21/09/2020 12:11

Imagine a very old and historic landmark set in the hills having only stone wall terraces, why didn't they factor in your desire for flat grass when establishing their businesses all those years ago?

Kitsmummy · 21/09/2020 12:11

@Toddlerteaplease

Cheddar is always ready to give advice!
I thought it was about Cheddar too😺
1forAll74 · 21/09/2020 12:26

Maybe turn around and go to Cheshire for some cheese, and there is plenty of grass to sit upon there. The last time I went to Cheddar Gorge was in 1959, and we took a picnic, and sat on some grass at the side of the road to eat it, and I remember my little Sister running around and falling in a muddy ditch and getting stung by some nettles !

IntermittentParps · 21/09/2020 12:31

Yes, YABU. That's not what this board is for.
Is it not? [hm] What is it for? Who says?

OP, sorry, I can't help. But the Swan suggested upthread sounds nice.

JustMeAndMyTins · 21/09/2020 12:52

Can't help and was also hoping for a cheese emergency but why on earth are people so stroppy about how the AIBU category is used? Hmm

I genuinely can't understand why it would bother people at all - let alone to the point where they comment rudely. @IntermittentParps I would love to know whether the 'rules' were ever meant to be so strict and why certain people appointed themselves as enforcers.

sapnupuas · 21/09/2020 13:16

I almost had a cheddar emergency if you'd like to hear it?

ghostyslovesheets · 21/09/2020 13:21

Nice of the OP to say thank you Hmm

IntermittentParps · 21/09/2020 13:24

JustMe, I know! Also all the snitty comments about why is she mentioning there's nowhere with grass they can sit on, why on earth hasn't she said exactly where she is...

I'm not surprised she doesn't feel minded to say thank you!

LongPauseNoAnswer · 21/09/2020 13:28

Yes, I do! I so wanted this to about a real cheddar emergency.
ArticulateYourLife · 21/09/2020 13:32

So you want a comprehensive list of all restaurants within a hours drive / walk / cycle / helicopter ride from Cheddar. Including details of their grass. Righty ho OP, will get onto it.

ArticulateYourLife · 21/09/2020 13:34

Well, I'm definitely never going there then. Phew, thanks for the review.

BadgerBrush · 21/09/2020 13:37

I came home from work one day to find my wife kneeling in front of the fridge in tears. When I asked what happened, she said "We don't have any cheese. I thought we had cheese. I wanted some cheese."

I had to quickly run to the shop to buy some cheese. Now that was a cheddar emergency.

sapnupuas · 21/09/2020 13:46

So, my friends and I take turns to host themed lunches. We all bring a course and take turns to decorate our houses to match the theme.

My turn was cowboy themed. I had the gingham table cloth; the bandana napkins; the cowboy hats.

I'd been to the shop to buy all the ingredients for cornbread and loaded potato skins with cheese and chive. I'd never made cornbread before and it came out to perfection. The potatoes were baking away in the oven nicely. My son was safely palmed off on grandparents. My husband was banished to his study to work. My guests were en route.

I'd forgotten to buy cheese to put on top of my potato skins!

Now, we all know that these potato skins would have been an absolute disaster without cheese. Cheese makes the meal.

Luckily I had two used blocks in the fridge, and the dregs of both packets was enough. Phew!

RoomForMore · 21/09/2020 13:46

I thought a cheddar emergency would be about cheese. And reading the post I assumed OP was going to gorge on cheddar in an hour and wanted to know what sort to get. I like applewood smoked.

I used to get a cheese called 'y Fenni' (I think) that had wholegrain mustard in it, that was very good!

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/09/2020 14:03

I clicked on this thinking it was cheddar the cat.

steppemum · 21/09/2020 14:03

to be fair, the OP said she was an hour away from cheddar and wanted somewhere to eat. I assume she meant IN CHEDDAR, so it really didn't matter where she was when she wrote it did it?

Brighterthansunflowers · 21/09/2020 14:14

Lancashire is the answer to any cheese emergency!

Or possibly a nice creamy mature Stilton

Only just had lunch but you made me hungry for cheese. Which tbh wouldn’t be a problem if I actually had either Lancashire or Stilton in the fridge Sad

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/09/2020 14:18

Cheddar is a bit grim for food. I’d keep going. But you’ve probably eaten by now. Or not.

Wells is a good food place. I’d go to wells. Cheddar always looks grubby and with the caves shut, I expect the shops are more dismal than usual.

Justmeandmycoffee · 21/09/2020 14:21

Edelweiss is nice for lunch and La Rocca are nice for dinner at cheddar gorge. Xx

fishonabicycle · 21/09/2020 14:33

I had 3 cheddar based meals yesterday: home made beans on sourdough with grated cheese (thanks Pudding Pantry, Nottingham), a cheese and tomato sandwich, and then cheese on toast! Champion!
