AIBU or so certain TV shows make your kids a bit wild?

DD is nearly 4, she doesn't watch a massive amount of TV, and is usually reasonably well behaved (pushes boundaries of course, but is quite rational).

But there are two TV shows that appear to have an immediate detrimental effect on her behaviour (taking it from standard nearly 4 year old, to actively and intentionally 'naughty' behaviour).

They are Peter Rabbit (which I hate anyway), and Messy Goes to Okido.

Am I imagining it? Or do some TV shows just make them behave Iike total rotters?

Yes, my oldest used to be very questionably behaved after watching Horrid Henry. Probably give those shows a miss Grin

Chilver · 20/09/2020 23:51

Yes, my DD instantly becomes cheeky when watching some Disney shows allegedly aimed at her age group. Others are fine, just two shows so she is not allowed to watch them Blush

Maryis · 21/09/2020 10:07

My son finds Peter rabbit too high drama to cope with, although he's realised that himself now and asks for it off of it should happen to come on, he quite like okido though and watches it in English and Welsh

AriettyHomily · 21/09/2020 10:15

I have blocked The Thundermans and Sam & Cat for DTs. Everything else they are fine with but these have a direct impact on their behaviour.

MyNameForToday1980 · 21/09/2020 11:29

I'm pleased it's not just us! I hate to blame TV for behaviour, but her behaviour is so out of character after those two specific shows.

@Maryis I think Peter Rabbit is too high drama for DD too, and Peter himself is mischievous. It's like DD is intoxicated by high drama revelry.

Horrid Henry used to wind my son up when he was younger, I had to ban it because he would go beyond just giggling and literally bounce off the walls. Also anything action packed would have the same effect.

Wtfdidwedo · 21/09/2020 11:34

I really enjoy Okido Grin Horrid Henry isn't allowed because I find it really irritating. I never thought I'd ban any TV shows!

womaninatightspot · 21/09/2020 11:37

I think Peppa pig is like crack for children. No idea why but ridiculous behaviour afterwards. Too old for it now but it was banned in our house.

MyNameForToday1980 · 21/09/2020 11:38

We banned Bing ages ago because I (irrationally) hate him, he's just an idiot.

I can see Horrid Henry mentioned a few times, so I'll keep my eye out for that (but not enough for confirmation-bias I hope). I think DD is a bit young for it anyway.

I quite like Okido - it seemed harmless, but DD watched it for the first time on Saturday morning, and a couple of episodes on Sunday morning, and she was WILD pretty much all weekend.

I don't expect her to be well behaved all the time, and I do expect her to push boundaries, but I also expect a bit of household cooperation - this weekend, zlich.

Yep we had to ban peppa pig - their behaviour was atrocious after watching it. Took me a while to make the link as nothing obvious stood out to me about the programme but now they don’t watch it harmony has returned!

ShinyGreenElephant · 21/09/2020 11:42

Bing is banned in our house, never noticed it affected her behaviour but he is such an awful, whiny little shit that I couldn't stand the idea of DD copying him in any way

peakygal · 21/09/2020 11:43

Have to agree on Horrid Henry. DDs attitude changed drastically and I couldn't figure out why until I realised a lot of what she would say was the same as Henry so he is banned. Peppa is too. I think shes horrible

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/09/2020 12:20

Yanbu- it’s teen titans go! Hete

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/09/2020 12:21

Tellmetruth4 · 21/09/2020 12:24

I don’t let my youngest watch Horrid Henry.

Itsseweasy · 21/09/2020 12:27

Yes I absolutely think you’re right - ours always goes a bit crazy during/after watching Paw Patrol. Too much noise and excitement I reckon.

dollypartonscoat · 21/09/2020 12:29

Horrid Henry and Dennis the Menace here

CitizenFame · 21/09/2020 12:29

My niece started acting really bossy from Charlie and Lola!

My friend was describing her child’s increasingly bad behaviour and she said she said something that I recognised and I asked if she watched Tracy Beaker. Tracy Beaker ban came into effect and behaviour improved Grin

LaTomatina · 21/09/2020 12:34

My nephew used to get bonkers and mean after watching Horrid Henry as well! Mine are generally whiney and listless/argumentative after cartoons so we try to avoid or stick to movies or animal planet.

Motherofmonsters · 21/09/2020 12:41

I've had to ban PJ Masks and anything with fighting in it as DS gets really physical after. Took me a while to make the connection with PJ Masks until he said super muscles before he hit me

FloydWasACat · 21/09/2020 12:43

I Carly and Sam & Cat were very quickly banned in our house!

ImFree2doasiwant · 21/09/2020 12:43

Blippi. The Wanker.

MyNameForToday1980 · 21/09/2020 13:03

In terms of TV shows that positively impact DD, I find Llama Llama and Daniel Tiger's Neighbourhood boring as fuck are likely to make her more 'collaborative' (and less wild).

Mypathtriedtokillme · 21/09/2020 13:09

I used to use Thomas the tank engine to my advantage when DD was obsessed and ask her if she was a “very helpful” engine??

I like Messy goes to Okido. It’s clever and explains fairly complex science in an interesting and understandable kid friendly way.

But I loathe Peppa.

Straven123 · 21/09/2020 13:14

I hate the wild theme tune to Peter Rabbit - it would hyperactivate anyone!
