To think most Christmas events are going to be curtailed / cancelled due to coronavirus

Just that really

Even if people aren’t making Christmas plans themselves now, restaurants, hotels etc need to be planning and it seems very unlikely big gatherings etc are going to be allowed in the foreseeable

Are we all going to be stuck at home with no events to go to?

Yes.

blue25 · 20/09/2020 09:43

Yes but I think that’s been obvious for quite a while now.

Chocolatealllllday · 20/09/2020 09:43

I think big groups events will be cancelled. Firework displays etc already are nearby but there are other things on still that aren't big gathering (unless of course things do get worse) such as Christmas light trial, Christmas train rides, outdoor Halloween events etc.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/09/2020 09:43

Yes. Local panto and Christmas markets already cancelled here.

Cornettoninja · 20/09/2020 09:44

I think businesses will get inventive and patio heaters are about to experience a huge rush on sales. I used to live in a city with a park that has an amphitheatre it held summer plays on. Something like that could be used for short pantos.

A lot of Christmas stuff has already been cancelled. My area straddles two councils and both released website updates during the lockdown that all council events (including Christmas fairs and markets) were cancelled until further notice.

SoManyActivities · 20/09/2020 09:44

Yes, I think they will. I'm quite looking forward to a quiet Christmas just us and the kids without all the pressure tbh!

Avery7 · 20/09/2020 09:45

Yes and I think that's the least of our worries; there could easily be restrictions over Xmas that forbid mixing of households.

Glenthebattleostrich · 20/09/2020 09:47

We are planning a very quiet Christmas at home instead of visiting family. We usually do lots of lovely festive things too but not planning anything because can't face disappointing my DD any more.

Swooningmonkey · 20/09/2020 09:47

The New Year’s Eve firework display in London has already been cancelled. It’s certainly going to be a very different Christmas this year. I wonder if all the Christmas lights will still be put up despite a drop in footfall.

SockYarn · 20/09/2020 09:48

Probably. But which "events" would you have gone to anyway? We don't do santa trains, pantomimes, not religious so don't go to church or carol services, kids are all senior school so no nativities.

A local village has set up an "advent window" scheme, 24 houses around the village, each with a number, a new window opens each day. print off a map online, or follow the route on your phone. low key, Christmassy, and easy to social distance.

And MUCH nicer than north pole breakfasts or standing in a queue to see a grumpy bloke dressed in a red coat.

Frazzled2207 · 20/09/2020 09:48

Yes. If we’re lucky we might get an exception to the forthcoming draconian rules and be allowed to have family over for Turkey.

AriettyHomily · 20/09/2020 09:49

Yes. I'm planning to be just us for Christmas and no events.

sapnupuas · 20/09/2020 09:50

Local panto postponed until November 2021...

It makes me very sad.

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 20/09/2020 09:53

Yes, our village has cancelled all the usual events. We don’t tend to pay to see a Santa or anything like that, but our village usually has a lovely event at the beginning of December (light switch on plus mini fair etc), and carol singing in the market place on Christmas Eve. Both cancelled. We usually go to a small panto at our local theatre which was been cancelled as the theatre has had to close its doors for good due to Covid. Kids are young primary so we usually have nativities and a carol concert which have all been cancelled. Christmas dance show performance that my children are usually in has been cancelled (also held at our local theatre usually). We sometimes go to the crib service at the church on Christmas Eve, not heard anything but I’m sure it won’t be going ahead in the same format (it’s usually rammed).
So yeah, it’ll be a different one for sure. I don’t care about the lack of expensive Christmas themed events (although they seem to be the only ones going ahead), it’s all the local community stuff I’ll miss.

MaosChaos · 20/09/2020 09:53

Yes.
And I don't want to hear 'Christmas is Cancelled'
It isn't. We just have to celebrate in a different way.
It's the consumerism that's going to be badly hit (though think our local butcher% grocers will be busier than ever)

megletthesecond · 20/09/2020 09:55

Yes. But most things were cancelled a while ago.

I'll miss Xmas eve afternoon church. But maybe they'll do it outside if it doesn't rain Hmm.

Even our outdoor events (like the Christmas Eve carol service held outside the church in the market place) have been cancelled!
ColouringPencils · 20/09/2020 09:56

Yes, I am in an area where we currently couldn't even see family for dinner. Hope that will change. I can't imagine anything that encourages you to gather in groups with strangers will be happening.

Bearbehind · 20/09/2020 09:58

But which "events" would you have gone to anyway?

I was thinking specifically of a theme night type thing at a local hotel that we usually go to - but there’s lots of other examples

It’s only DH and I that go but you’re usually seated in tables of 10 or 12 and all served together

That kind of thing simply isn’t going to be able to happen is it?

I feel for all those in the hospitality industry who will be affected by it

Yes they probably will. I'm a bit sad as I love Christmas. We go to the panto every year with our family and have a nice meal. This year I think we'll end up having a zoom party and watching a pre recorded panto or something seperatly at home. It's not the same but I'll dress up and cook something nice, try and make the best of it.

I'm planning on decorating the house extra Christmassy, going to buy some lights for outside today. Hopefully the neighbours will so at least we can go for walks to look at the lights, maybe with some mulled wine in a travel mug and try to pretend we're at a Christmas market Grin.

barofsoap · 20/09/2020 10:07

Can imagine a huge number of events will be cancelled over Xmas, but will they ever restart? Bit like the Olympics - put off for a year - will it happen in 2021 or is that it?

ColouringPencils · 20/09/2020 10:08

Events I would normally go to would include a panto/ theatre show; another Christmas event like a winter wonderland or similar; carol service; 3 x kids' school Christmas services; Christmas market; would normally go to church throughout advent and midnight mass on Christmas eve; work Christmas party; night out with friends; night in with family friends; movie night with friends... It's quite a lot not to do!

StCharlotte · 20/09/2020 10:08

For a true authentic experience flush £100 down the loo as well hee hee.

OMG that's a brilliant idea!

I wonder if I could organise something like that down our road?

Polly111 · 20/09/2020 10:11

I think a lot will be cancelled. We usually book the panto or Santa train but have found an outdoor Christmas trail instead and hopefully that will still go ahead as it’s tickets only.

Not expecting we’ll be allowed any Christmas parties, which is a shame.
