dp and I have separated

He's financially abusive He's also a master of gaslighting. Its took 3 years to get out. He took ever penny with him when he finally left.

I have the house (council) but things like the electricity, broadband etc are in his name so he can cancel any time he wants and holds it over me. I am paying all these things and he is paying £12 a week for the 2 kids (income 18k with covid and having no work for 4 months and lots of cash on hand going on) based on non covid years his salary is 30k and we live in Central Scotland.

Aibu to cancel all the things in his name or replace them and not pay the cancellation fees? I don't know if I will be liable for them or not but I can't live with having the threat of things being cancelled hanging over me.

If I set up electric and broadband in my name what will happen to the other contacts?

One thing they will ask is for tenancy agreeement with the date it commenced .
They may put you on pre payment as you were the tenant at the property when the debt was run up. They are quiet hot on things like that because tenants run up massive bills then start new account in different family members name .
I would speak to each provider and get advice from them don't lie and say you have just moved in as people have suggested . Because if he doesn't pay they will investigate who was living there and the date on your tenancy will prove you lied . They have really tightened up on this over the years .

I’ve dealt with multiple accounts in arrears on gas and electric running into hundreds of pounds over the last 3 years. Only once have I ever been asked to prove ownership.

Definitely, contact all the companies regarding the bills in your husband’s name. They’ll tell you what to do.
Also look at tax credits to see if you are eligible for anything, contact council for rent rebate and single person council tax.
Phone Citizen’s Advice who will be able to give you helpful advice.
Lastly, write everything down so you can keep track track of all the info you are given - names of who you talked to, dates etc.

contact the services or suppliers, explain the chnage in your circumstances and say you now want your own accounts in your name which you will pay. They will tell you how to do it.

The only people who have ever asked me for this was the TV Licensing when I moved out of the country years ago and wanted to cancel my license.

I've moved more times than I have fingers. Just ring them up and say you want to open an account in your name for this address.

Do as people say here if you feel you can - ie shop around for better deals, but if you can't face that right now, then just call the existing ones and set up a new account.

On the old ones, do what you feel is fair, but cancelling the direct debits, and letting him know you've done so because you've taken over the accounts seems right to me (after the fact, perhaps by post like the other poster)

thanks for the advice

I have changed the utilities and informed him I will not longer be paying the broadband so he needs to sort it by the end of the week.

@RHOBHfan

Phone up the companies, say he’s moved out, give them a meter reading and start a new account in your name...

It isn’t more difficult than that, surely?

Oh God, I've not read the whole thread! CANCEL THE CHEQUE!

Well done OP, check moneysupermarket or moneysaving expert for the best broadband deals...

Be careful with the water bill. Any adult over 18 living in the property can be held responsible even if they’re not named on it.
