To think most people only look on Air BnB for self catering couples mini breaks these days?

I have a holiday cottage business. It is my only income and I live in the same village as my cottage.

We have a new glamping property, built in our field (with planning permission).

I'm thinking of using Air BnB. It is for couples only, and mainly for short breaks. I get the impression that unless you are looking in a specific area/ have loyalty to a particular cottage company most people nowadays only look on Air BnB for this sort of thing?

I'm not talking about a week long family holiday, more a 3 or 4 night break.

What do you think? Thanks.

Like others it depends, I tend to look on a few different sites as costs can differ. We do use Airbnb quite a lot though for couple getaways. It’s also been very useful for affordable accommodation for weddings in quite rural locations.

unmarkedbythat · 19/09/2020 15:44

I'm not a fan of Airbnb. I'll look, but unless there are no other options at all locally I'm highly unlikely to book.

Pinkshrimp · 19/09/2020 15:47

I use air b & b for week long family (4) self catering bookings as the last holiday cottage company I used (Sykes) were overpriced and unclean and there was a block on being able to book a tripadvisor review.

Booking.com only printed the nice things DSis wrote about her awful stay -great proximity to the beach- and left off the damp, peeling wallpaper, toenail clippings on the carpet and raw sausages so I don’t trust the reviews.

Fink · 19/09/2020 15:57

I've never used Air B&B. Use booking.com for every trip.

I do trust the reviews on booking.com. They always print mine in full, good and bad points. I had a multi-stop holiday this year so used 8 different properties. They printed the full review for all 8.

I’ve only ever looked on air bnb for properties suitable for large family gatherings.

bluebeck · 19/09/2020 15:58

I use AirBNB for trips for larger groups of friends more often as it's cost effective. If it's just two of you, often cheaper to book a hotel room.

I would never use Airbnb for glamping though. I would look at a camping website, or is there a bespoke Glamping website that carries such properties?

JumperTime · 19/09/2020 15:58

I use homeaway, TripAdvisor and Holiday lettings, never used air bnb.

movingonup20 · 19/09/2020 15:59

I use Booking.com because they provide good after service when things go wrong. I also book direct with owners - ensure you have a good website as well as on booking sites, I wouldn't trust booking a property that didn't because I only want professional holiday lets

Ginfordinner · 19/09/2020 16:01

TBH, I have never used airbnb. I tend to google exactly what I want eg self catering near Ludlow, and see what comes up.

Given that aibnb isn't regulated, lots of people have been messed about by airbnb hosts, and there are ethical concerns about local housing being unaffordable I don't think I would ever use them now.

Venicelover · 19/09/2020 16:01

Booking.com for me too, although we were once left in the lurch by them when the hotel we arrived at cancelled due to a water leak. The hotel found rooms for all their direct bookings, but not for those booked via third party sites. Booking.com is not UK based and the phone operator did not know the area well enough, so we had to find our own accommodation for the night.

We have used Airbnb and we had a good experience, but the ability to cancel at short notice by the owner does put me off.

IsadoraQuagmire · 19/09/2020 16:04

I would NEVER use Airbnb!

yearinyearout · 19/09/2020 16:10

I use air bnb but also use other cottage rental websites such as holiday lettings/Sykes etc. For one or two night breaks I'd be more likely to book an hotel.

AnnieMaul · 19/09/2020 16:13

I try and avoid air B&B unless there are absolutely no other options.

I'll particularly after all this covid business. It was a bloody nightmare trying to cancel and get refunded for stays that were cancelled beyond our control. Appreciate it's not the owners fault and they'll have lost income, but Air B&B still wanted the money in spite of lockdown and not physically being able to go. Hotels.com and booking.com cancelled and refunded where applicable no problem. So for peace of mind, i'll be sticking with them now.

What I also hate about Air B&B is that you have to submit a pissing photo. It's 11pm, i'm reluctantly trying to book a one night stay for work, no I don't want to send you a bloody selfie.

hotels.com, booking.com, holidaycottages.co.uk are our preferred.

Another reason why I don't use it.

reluctantbrit · 19/09/2020 16:17

I never use AirBnB, I just don't like the concept.

I use HomeandAway or booking.com a lot and always look for owner's own websites and ideally book direct.

We did this for full week breaks and also short trips.

Ginkypig · 19/09/2020 16:18

I have used booking a few times and would definitely use it above air b&b but actually Iv had quite good luck using itison and 5pm etc too but I'm quite carful about reading exactly what's included etc.

MiaowMix · 19/09/2020 16:23

We're the polar opposite, would ONLY use Airbnb for family holidays, including villas abroad. For couples holidays we much prefer hotels so use Booking.com, Expedia, Mr & Mrs Smith etc.
I think Airbnb comes into its own for bigger groups, but hotels are far superior if it's just two of you.

lottiegarbanzo · 19/09/2020 16:31

I'd use Air B&B but other sites too. I'd google 'glamping in ' and look through the top few companies.

Air B&B has advantages, like that each host sets their own T&Cs to an extent, so some will give full refunds up to a few days beforehand, which is very relevant at the moment (given travel insurance not covering covid).

Nottherealslimshady · 19/09/2020 16:37

I always scope out loads of sites.

user1487194234 · 19/09/2020 16:47

I don't like Airbnb so wouldn't book through them

SurreyHillsGirl · 19/09/2020 16:53

When DH and I go on a UK we would never use Air B&B, always hotels or camping / glamping. I feel that Air B&B is for families or groups looking for accommodation.

SurreyHillsGirl · 19/09/2020 16:54

*UK break

Swooningmonkey · 19/09/2020 16:54

I’m a little bemused, do people realise that booking.com et al, provide the exact same service that they’re attempting to boycott at Airbnb? I’m totally indifferent to them and I don’t support their business model btw.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2020 16:58

I think airB&B is the one place we wouldn't look, tbh.

Ginfordinner · 19/09/2020 16:58

I have booked through Booking.com and had refunds when things went pear shaped. I understand that this doesn't always happen with airbnb.
