Long skirts around the house

I've gone full mummy fashion blogger today and I'm wearing a gorgeous floaty skirt with a little tee.

So tricking annoying to get about. So far, the cat has played about with it, DH (and I) have stepped on it going down stairs, I've got annoyed kneeling down to get things out of cupboards and caught in the car door.

Ffs I'm clearly doing this floating fashion thing wrong.

Aibu to think pretty impractical for a mum? How did the 70s ladies do it?

I don’t understand the point of wearing something that you have to gather up, tuck in, tie in a knot just to do normal things like walking upstairs, kneeling or getting into a car Confused

Yep - daft isn't it? You'd never see a man wear something so impractical.

I love a maxi skirt and dress, but I wouldn't wear one to do anything remotely practical in. They're fine for things like BBQ's or sitting in the pub though!

ViciousJackdaw · 19/09/2020 20:14

I just did an image search then hit translate on the Danish website it's on. It's a 'really nice long skirt' that can be 'burgers for both everyday and party'.

Cryalot2 · 19/09/2020 20:40

You get used to it. There are ways. I often wear long skirts or maxi dresses .
Find what works for you.

Groundhogdayzz · 19/09/2020 20:45

I sometimes wear fitted pencil skirts, the cheaper ones are elasticated, you can just hitch them up into mini skirts in the day, and then pull them down long for the school run.

JaneJeffer · 19/09/2020 20:51

Move to a bungalow.

I discovered palazzo trousers this summer which I absolutely love, they are so voluminous they look like a maxi skirt. Only thing is every so often I trip myself up as they’re so long. It’s so flipping infuriating, it hasn’t stopped me from wearing them though. I’d rather look like a fool stumbling all over the place out in public.

I've never had a problem with long skirts, but I do like wearing cropped leggings around the house right now. Quite practical for me. But I'd never wear leggings out and about unless I have a long tunic to cover my arse.... Grin

What is a gunt @MitziK**

🤣🤣 not sure you want to know!

What is a gunt *@MitziK*

It's not floor length and I am 5 6.

This is the one - its tight to the hip and then flared and I love it. Very light and lined.

It's a mean word for the giant fucking overhang post caesarian section & morbid obesity that hangs down in front of the pubic area, if not past it - a compound of gut and cunt.

It doesn't matter how much weight you lose, it just gets longer and lower and increases your clothing size so much that no pair of trousers can ever fit the front without leaving so much space at the back that they fall down.

And it's visible in trousers, however loose they are, never mind in shitty leggings.

Skirts, however, are far more forgiving.

FallonsTeaRoom · 19/09/2020 22:35

You wear it "out" and not around the house.

Mogtheforgetfulmum · 19/09/2020 22:49

@ColleagueFromMars oo sounds lovely, please post a link!!

I inherited lots of cheesecloth dresses and hippy maxi skirts from my mum from the 70s and I'd love more but I've really struggled to find anything the same.

Yerroblemom1923 · 19/09/2020 23:00

I have never heard of a "gunt"! I'm not sure I wanted to either!!

Knittingnanny · 19/09/2020 23:09

Ahh I was a 70’s teenager/ student/ new young teacher. I used to whip up a maxi skirt on my machine and wear it out the same evening. Wouldn’t wear it for housework though. I did once or twice use some clothes pegs to hitch it up when I cycled to the Friday night youth club.
When I was first teaching, little ones used to wipe their noses on my voluminous maxi skirts.
I’ve just bought one! To cover my knee straps which I need for arthritis! Wish I had kept my vintage ones, although my size 12 then was 24” waist which wouldn’t do up on me now!

I love a long floaty skirt but I'm 5' 10" tall so floaty or drapey things feel good on me. I don't tend to wear them around the house though, especially when I had cats!

Passthecake30 · 20/09/2020 14:08

I want around in long skirts around the house, and don’t have any of the issues you mention? Though I’m 6ft, maybe that helps. Also helps to have a split at the side or the front middle, less restricting.

Wingedharpy · 20/09/2020 14:18

Platform boots is what you need OP.

Mogtheforgetfulmum · 24/09/2020 19:45

Thank you @ColleagueFromMars - this has made my week!! Smile

keeprocking · 24/09/2020 23:20

As a 70s lady, I also recommend the knicker elastic trick.

As a 60s gal I say what knickers???? Nothing nicer than a floaty long skirt or dress when it's hot, my grandson thinks I was a commando, he's very impressed, because I have my Summer commando frock!
