Long skirts around the house

BlackbirdFirst · 19/09/2020 13:59

I've gone full mummy fashion blogger today and I'm wearing a gorgeous floaty skirt with a little tee.

So tricking annoying to get about. So far, the cat has played about with it, DH (and I) have stepped on it going down stairs, I've got annoyed kneeling down to get things out of cupboards and caught in the car door.

Ffs I'm clearly doing this floating fashion thing wrong.

Aibu to think pretty impractical for a mum? How did the 70s ladies do it?

I've just bought a few recycled sari material long skirts and I am absolutely loving them! There's a whole community of ladies who are obsessed with them and most are very practical in them. That was my promise to myself that if I bought them I would wear them day to day not keep for best, and so far I'm pleasantly surprised by how practical I can be in them as I'm definitely a practical doing things not particularly elegant woman Grin

I think it's just getting in the habit of hitching up when doing steps and out of the way of wheeled office chairs and stuff.

My dog has tried to bite play with them such i draw the line at and my cat uses me as a kind of mobile tent, but I love them.

Poshjock · 19/09/2020 16:24

I love floaty skirts and have a load of long (just above the ankle) godot skirts. TBH the more you wear them the more you get used to it and I barely think about stairs now. If my hand is free I grab a handful of fabric just above the knee - to the side for going up and the the front for going down. Even if I’m carrying stuff I can still usually move and hold the bulk of fabric out of the way. No knicker tucking here!

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/09/2020 16:27

Aibu to think pretty impractical for a mum?

I wasn’t aware that having had a baby was a prerequisite for going up stairs.

zukiecat · 19/09/2020 16:29

I wear long skirts most of the time and have done since I was old enough to state my preference.

I never wear leggings, trousers, and all other forms if trousers, except jeans which I wear occasionally.

I just hold the skirts up with my hand.

BiBabbles · 19/09/2020 16:33

If it's being that annoying, I'd recommend skirts a few inches shorter. I've found going mid-calf from previously wearing ankle-length solved some issues.

I leave floaty things to my teenager who loves that sort of thing. My long skirts just tend to be loose and not constructed in a way that restricts movement (which I find trousers do) nor does the swishy thing when I move that DD loves.

I find I go upstairs with a wider stance which seems to help when I can't arsed to pull a Jane Austen adaptation of holding my skirt. I squat rather than kneel down, and yes they can get caught on things though I find I catch my sleeve on door handles more than my skirts on anything.

I've never done the waistband/knicker trick while walking, though have tucked it up between my legs when I've needed awkwardly squat down and there is something on the floor. I find it less of a faff to be able to move material out of the way than getting trouser cuffs wet or finding trousers that fit all my dimensions (rather than just my waist).

rubydoobydoo · 19/09/2020 16:33

I have a really comfy long dress that I live in around the house, but the cats like to grab the hem as I'm going down the stairs!

Apart from that obvious issue, I've sort of got used to swishing it out of the way when I need.

MitziK · 19/09/2020 16:37

@Smallsteps88

Sounds exhausting.

Have you heard of leggings? Grin

Stepping to ask 'have you heard of a gunt?'.

Swishy skirts are far less offensive to the eye than me in a pair of leggings in public. And less sweaty than loose trousers, as I've found working through the summer.

I'm wearing yoga type trousers at the moment, but that's because I'm not leaving the sofa house at all today and have no self respect. For some people, including myself, it doesn't feel good to look crap. I'm in too much pain to care today. But if I wasn't, I'd just be lifting a longer skirt slightly when going upstairs, not worrying about a midaxi or entertaining myself knowing that there's a cat about to emerge from the depths to harass the other one as it innocently wanders past my (bare) feet.

peakotter · 19/09/2020 16:45

I’m a long dress wearer all summer. I like the coolness, hiding my legs in public but getting vitamin d in the garden, and popping leggings on underneath in the morning and evening to keep warm. I’m outdoors a lot and don’t like to keep getting changed during the day.

Stairs-take them at a run two at a time.

Gardening and housework- either tucked in to my knickers or tied in a knot at knee height.

Plus they’re very useful for carrying toys.

Can’t stop the toddler using me as a tent though!

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 19/09/2020 16:53

It’s great, and when you sweep up and down stairs you pick the skirts up and IMMEDIATELY feel like Cinderella/Elisa Bennett etc.

@awsomer

I am it so funny that you managed to have triggered so many people OP. Please go and take a photo posing in front of a brightly coloured wall just to finish them all off. Grin
Grin Same. all the outrage because someone doesn't want to follow the trousered herd. Seriously though, long skirts and shortarses (raises hand) don't mix well. I've learned how to take up a gathered hem just for these occasions...
Funguy · 19/09/2020 16:55

Stuff it up in the sides of your knickers. Then answer the door.

Seafog · 19/09/2020 17:03

I'm up and down stairs all day, working and doing the house and garden stuff, still mange in a floaty skirt

dottiedodah · 19/09/2020 17:11

I have a Sundress that is long and floaty and find it difficult to go up and down stairs! Tend to mostly wear cotton trousers and a cool top .No idea how the 70s girls did it !(Maybe they all lived in Bungalows!)

SantaClaritaDiet · 19/09/2020 17:13

I want to know how floaty your skirt is!

I have found maxi dresses a lot more comfortable and practical when working from home this year, I don't understand this worship of leggings. They are great for exercise, but apart from that? If you need to wear a tunic or long top with it (and really, so many women should...), you might as well skip the leggings and stick to long dress.

You just get used to skirts, just lift them in the stairs, no need to tuck them anywhere Confused

romany4 · 19/09/2020 17:14

How did the 70s ladies do it?

My mum wore jeans or knee length skirts.
I never saw her in anything long or floaty

SantaClaritaDiet · 19/09/2020 17:17

Asos sold the first one as a floaty maxi dress, you barely notice them in stairs. I really want to know what kind you are wearing.

Picture 2 might be more tricky I give you that Grin

Oooo, I think I saw you the other day! Stopping traffic while your cows crossed the road? I've got to say it was the first time I've ever seen a glamorously clad farmer![/quote]
Sadly not me! I don't have cattle any more, only sheep.

bunnyonthemantle · 19/09/2020 17:28

@Antibles

Donate it to the mums with daughters whose legs are so long they can't get a knee length school skirt for love nor money. They can dye it black and job done.

One of the reasons I love wearing long, swishy skirts is that they drape behind me on the stairs like a train, and I feel like the queen. It's the little things, you know...

BlackbirdFirst · 19/09/2020 17:53

What is a gunt @MitziK

It's not floor length and I am 5 6.

This is the one - its tight to the hip and then flared and I love it. Very light and lined.

Got a just under mid-calf length skirt. It's very, very big, you could probably get 3 regular skirts out of the fabric with ease. It's lovely to wear when walking, but for all other things, it's pretty cumbersome.

Getting in the car, it's a lot of tucking and sorting; going down the stairs need to hoik it up and even then because there's so much fabric it's difficult. Sitting on an office chair, as long as you don't move it's alright, but as soon as you move the castors of the chair get stuck rolling onto it.

So, great skirt, but not practical at all. In my house, which is a bungalow, it would be alright, but I tend to forget that I have it anymore.

Catiopea · 19/09/2020 18:21

I love a long dress/skirt, wide belt for tucking in if I’m gardening.

Today I’m painting though so rocking my dungarees Grin

Oh and practically ubiquitous headscarf over my plaits.

Little House on the Prairie goals 😂

I always find them super annoying and am forever catching it on stuff.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 19/09/2020 18:25

If there is enough material tie it at the side in a big knot

Sh05 · 19/09/2020 19:12

Like the above pp said tie it in a knot on one side when you are rushing around tydying up and grab hold above the knee for stairs. I love long dresses
