To go to a&e if shes still limping in an hour?

DD, almost 2 year old, started limping quite badly about an hour ago. No fall, no bumps, no tears, just stood up and starting limping. She cant weightbare on that leg and it's so bad she keeps wobbling over with it. I've rung the Drs who said they would get a dr to call me back but as yet I've not had a call.
DD seems generally ok in her self if I bit miffed she cant run around and confused she keeps falling.
I'm not usually one to worry too much, more of a 'ah shell be fine in an hour' but something is making me feel a bit worried about this..

Go with your instinct: This:

My son had this when he was just over 2. He literally just suddenly couldn’t weight beat on his left leg. I work in a hospital and asked one of the doctors who said this WAS considered urgent and that he should be seen in paeds A&E ASAP. He had bloods and loads of X Rays plus a senior paed review. Nothing was found, inflammatory markers etc normal but it was taken seriously.

mistermagpie · 18/09/2020 15:45

My son had this. My BIL is a paediatrician and checked him over, he said it's quite common for children who are poorly with a virus or even coming down with something to have symptoms in their hips which can result in a limp. I'd never heard of this!

In the case of my son it wasn't that, I could only assume he had hurt himself somehow and sort of not noticed (he's 3 so not the best at telling you things), it got better within a day or so.

Anyway, worth checking for signs of illness as well as injury because it can be a factor.

AnyFucker · 18/09/2020 15:47

That was quite the drip feed Hmm

I would take her to A+E

OneDayIllStopNamechanging · 18/09/2020 15:51

The Dr called back... calpol and see how she is tomorrow. Feel like a bit of a Wally worrying over it now, fingers crossed she'll wake up fine.

@AnyFucker

Sounds like irritable hip (transient synovitis)

She does need evaluating to be sure it isn't an infection of the joint. Bloods and an Xray as minimum.

Both my kids have had this, DS at 3 and DD at 18 months, I was told it can be a post viral thing, after a cold or something. We were told to rest it completely for a week.
nomorespaghetti · 18/09/2020 15:53

My DD broke her arm at age 1 after a fall from cruising onto a soft carpet Confused But we didn’t realise until the next day when she couldn’t weight bear on it (crawling). She didn’t seem in pain with it at all. My doctors at a&e said it’s very common with children to not show pain like adults would.

My son has also had the thing when he couldn’t walk a couple of things after a bout of illness... norovirus in his case. I never knew that was a thing either but docs said it was quite common.

I’d take her straight to a&e.

nomorespaghetti · 18/09/2020 15:54

I’m really surprised your gp said that! And I’d still go to a&e. Trust your instincts

Did you tell your GP about the fall this morning?

I wouldn't wait, tbh. I would take her to A&E.

tiredanddangerous · 18/09/2020 15:59

Mothers instinct really is a thing op. Take her to a&e.

m00rfarm · 18/09/2020 16:00

My son had a pain in his hip (bit older) and took to GP to oget checked out. The GP put him in a wheelchair, would not let him walk and I had to take him direct to A&E. It ended up with him being non weight bearing for 3-4 months. but all ok now. Although he has a strange knee issue 15 years on, which I wonder now is related (some sort of referred pain). Scans and MRI done and no idea what the issue is ... Anyway - I would go to A&E to check out.

LoveLanky · 18/09/2020 16:01

I was away with some friends when their daughter (about 18 months) did this. There was seemingly no reason for it. Was very strange but 2 days later she was walking normally again.

unimaginativeusernamehere · 18/09/2020 16:01

I'd take her to A&E.

OneDayIllStopNamechanging · 18/09/2020 16:03

Well she didnt fall but I did mention her suddenly screaming to the GP. He didnt seem overly concerned at all and said he would only want her seen if there was no improvement in 24 hours or if she got worse, developed any other symptoms such as a cold or temp or if she started to get distressed by it.

@OneDayIllStopNamechanging

When my son was similar age he all
Of a sudden got a limp. Couldn’t bear any weight and was very upset. It turned out to be Transient Synovitis which is excess fluid in joint. It is (relatively) common and harmless. I’m fact our local (very big) hospital had a weekly “limping child clinic”!

You should get it checked out if persists or is still a problem tomorrow. And obviously there could be other reasons but just wanted to make you aware of this one.

Hope she feels better soon

Toddlerteaplease · 18/09/2020 16:09

I agree with @AnyFucker, need to rule out septic arthritis/ osteomyelitis. Though the latter is unlike with such a short history. But should be investigated.

OneDayIllStopNamechanging · 18/09/2020 16:13

Seems like it's quite a common occurrence, kids randomly limping. I feel like this is something that should be mentioned at some point Grin
Well shes had calpol so I think il keep a close eye on her for now, I still cant shake the feeling something isnt right though even though I'm trying to be rational about it.DP is home soon so I'll see what he thinks, by which time the calpol will have had time to take effect aswell.

My DD had a random limp for a day too. Very strange but resolved itself!

Rainbowgravy · 18/09/2020 20:13

My daughter also had irritable hip ehen she was around 2 and we were sent to the hospital to rule out Perthes disease. She woke up one morning limping although there was no obvious pain. They did take it seriously so it's good you have sought medical advice. My dd recovered over a couple of weeks and a couple of follow ups at the hospital.

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 18/09/2020 20:16

DS had unexplained hip pain and we went to A&E. I thought they’d tell us we were overreacting but they took us it quite seriously and he had scans and tests etc.

Ullupullu · 18/09/2020 20:18

Hope you didn't go to A+E as it was neither A nor E. What would you expect them to say or do there if not tell her to "rest"?

HappyBumbleBee · 18/09/2020 21:21

I have to be honest @OneDayIllStopNamechanging my three are grown up now and I never experienced this with any of them, nor any of my nieces or nephews. BUT as a Mum the best advice I can give and have been given over the years is trust your instinct!
Really hope your little one is soon tearing around again very soon xx

Wrenna · 18/09/2020 21:25

This happened to my son too but it was both legs, he was about 2 and just stopped walking! Took him in and they did say it was fairly common and he was walking again by the end of the day. But my heart!!
