Is 4 too old?

I want to get a play kitchen for my DS who is 4. We used to have one but it got ruined from two children playing constantly with it. We didn’t replace it as my DH thinks 4 is too old and he won’t play with it for much longer.

Is 4 too old?!

If the first got so much use it wore out then definitely get another one!

Thebig3 · 18/09/2020 06:38

I think it is. My 2yr nearly 3yr old has one and very rarely plays with it now.

dreamingwondering · 18/09/2020 06:39

My 6 and 4 year old still play with theirs most days. Don't see it stopping anytime soon

MyOtherProfile · 18/09/2020 06:41

My kids played with theirs til the youngest was 8. So much scope with a toy like this.

FippertyGibbett · 18/09/2020 06:50

No.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/09/2020 06:52

Do you have a garden? If so what about a mud kitchen instead?

Oysterbabe · 18/09/2020 06:53

I'm not sure. My nearly 5 year old still plays with it but I think that's mostly because her nearly 3 year old brother does. She's more into small world play.

tmh88 · 18/09/2020 06:53

I think ikea do a nice little wood one for about £25 with a chalkboard on it! That way you aren’t losing out a lot of money if you don’t get the play out of it!

NameChange84 · 18/09/2020 06:53

That’s around the age that most children I know got one for Christmas...played with until around 7. Have you seen the outdoor mud kitchens? Would that be a better option?

footprintsintheslow · 18/09/2020 06:54

Of course it's not too old. Most schools have play kitchens and outdoor mud kitchens in Foundation Phase here in Wales.

zigaziga · 18/09/2020 06:54

4 year old rarely plays with ours now BUT his school has an epic play kitchen / house thing and the reception kids including mine LOVE it so I don’t think it’s too old.

MsTSwift · 18/09/2020 06:55

IKEA play kitchen was last toy standing. Dds played with it until they about 8/9. They enjoyed playing restaurants especially telling customers that the imaginary food they ordered was off

footprintsintheslow · 18/09/2020 06:55

@Thebig3

I think it is. My 2yr nearly 3yr old has one and very rarely plays with it now.
They might be too young and might need an adult to play with them so they know how to play with it.

Or maybe it's not their thing? Do they see other people cook in real life?

Charleyhorses · 18/09/2020 06:57

If you think your kid will love it, get one! I often see ones on our local fb group for a few pounds

Southernsoftie76 · 18/09/2020 06:57

Definitely not too old, I think I remember a play kitchen in my daughters reception classroom, brilliant imaginative play. I would buy a slightly more sophisticated one with a washing machine etc.

Fairybatman · 18/09/2020 07:04

DS is 4 in a few weeks and it’s his most used toy. I can’t see that stopping any time soon.

DisneyMillie · 18/09/2020 07:06

Not too old at all - my dd4 loves hers and her sister aged 10 is also happy to play restaurants with it still!!

Rubbleonthedouble1 · 18/09/2020 07:09

We got a mud kitchen around the time out indoor one broke and the mud kitchen took over!

The 5 year olds in my class love the kitchen - especially the boys! Get one second hand on marketplace. You can nearly always find a bargain Ikea kitchen

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 18/09/2020 07:36

My 4 year old loves her kitchen and plays with it more now than she did when she was 2, if the first one got played with so much then I would definitely get another one.

zigaziga · 18/09/2020 07:41

Oh well if you’ve got a mud kitchen maybe not much point?

whirlwindwallaby · 18/09/2020 07:44

I'd be more likely to involve a four year old in helping in an actual kitchen. I don't think I'd buy a play one for a four year old unless they had a younger sibling or cousin to pass it on to.

Samanabanana · 18/09/2020 08:05

My 4.5 year old has suddenly started playing with his kitchen loads having ignored it for the past year. I don't think 4 is too old at all Smile

wuickquestion · 18/09/2020 16:56

The ikea duktig £60 one is taller than most. We got our kitchen out for my younger child and DS just turned 4 has been playing with it all. It's small for him as not Ikea. The favourite is the microwave and blender we've attached (just tacky plastic things from Symths ) but he loves a gadget.
