Is 4 too old?

I want to get a play kitchen for my DS who is 4. We used to have one but it got ruined from two children playing constantly with it. We didn’t replace it as my DH thinks 4 is too old and he won’t play with it for much longer.

DS got ones for his 2nd Birthday and still plays with it most days nearly a year later.

Babamamasheep · 18/09/2020 17:11

The most used are in my reception class is the home corner and kitchen.

Blurp · 18/09/2020 17:11

Can you find one cheaply on FB Marketplace it Gumtree or somewhere? Then you can probably sell it for pretty much the same amount if it doesn't get played with.

AntiHop · 18/09/2020 17:12

My 6 year old still plays with hers, although less than when she was 4.

unimaginativeusernamehere · 18/09/2020 17:15

My 4yo ds still plays with his a lot as does my almost 6yo nephew when he's here.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 18/09/2020 17:18

Will children playing with it be less be down to how long they have had it for though
If 2 year old had it for 2 years they will have it a while and newer toys may seem more appealing where as if bought new for a 4 year old they may use it as new toy ?

Porcupine83 · 18/09/2020 17:19

DS (3) plays with his a lot, esp with my friend’s DD who is 5. They play cafes and restaurants games and it can keep them busy for hours serving food to the adults Grin
I can see ours being played with for a few years yet (as we have a younger DS too).

Familyiseverything10 · 18/09/2020 19:28

My daughter is 6 and a half and has the IKEA play kitchen. We got it for her 2nd Xmas. She plays with it nearly every day. It's probably her favourite toy.

Her school friend came to play the other day and it was lovely to hear them playing with it. Writing menus out and taking orders etc. Even I like playing with it!

Sailingblue · 18/09/2020 19:39

I was thinking about upgrading ours for my 4yo (I have a younger one too so not as worried about upper age). We’ve had lots of pictures of her playing with the one at school and it seems like lots of the children have gravitated towards it. I think they maybe start to play in a different way at 4 plus.

Stompythedinosaur · 18/09/2020 19:44

We've only recently got rid of ours and my youngest is 7. I think you'd get another couple of years play from a kitchen. The roleplay just becomes more complex.

Stompythedinosaur · 18/09/2020 19:45

Although, if you want an alternative, we still have a shop that is still used.

theneverendinglaundry · 18/09/2020 19:47

My 4 and a half year old got one for Christmas and rarely plays with it. I think it's going on Marketplace next week!

Ohtherewearethen · 18/09/2020 19:50

The way in which children play with these role-play toys alters and adapts as they get older but there is so much mileage in them. Honestly, go for it. They seem to go very quickly second hand too so you can always get a little bit back for it if you think it's served its purpose in a year or so.

SideAfries · 18/09/2020 20:21

Oh my kids love their kitchen! (They’re only 3 & 1 though!) but I can’t see them growing out of it anytime soon, it’s a firm favourite.

I’m actually thinking of getting them a better one for Christmas, & some gadgets... does anyone have any recommendations?

DDiva · 18/09/2020 20:39

My 7 year old still likes playing with her kitchen, she asked for extra food and wipe off menus/receipts for her 7th birthday. If it encourages her imagination and dosnt involve a screen it can only be a good thing.

You can probably get a cheap one on the selling pages.

Torvean32 · 19/09/2020 00:01

We had a mud kitchen in a place i used to work. All kids ( at nursery) loved it aged 2-5.

Pickles89 · 19/09/2020 02:08

It's a really depressing world when 4 year olds are too old to play. Sad

Dishwashersaurous · 19/09/2020 06:55

Definitely not too old. Even my ten year old will sometimes play with the toy kitchen (made and painted clay fruit to go in it)

Dylaninthemovies1 · 19/09/2020 07:19

DS is 4 and still plays in his. Whenever we have friends/relatives with older kids (up to 11) they often still join in kitchen play (or pretending to be a restaurant)

claireyjs · 19/09/2020 10:22

My 7 year old still plays with hers

DS just helped in the actual kitchen at four, he preferred to do it for real. Still played with Lego and so on, just not much interest in pretending by that age.
