Energy suppliers want powers to switch off electricity via smart meters

Wtf? Do you think this law would get through in the spring, enabling electricity to be switched off via smart meters in emergencies (where residents are using too much). Every household would need a 3rd generation smart meter and they would surely need to be made compulsory?

I'd be surprised if energy suppliers could manage to roll out 3rd generation smart meters to all households in a short space of time (especially as they haven't rolled 1st & 2nd generation out to all yet).

Just be organised and switch to another fix before the end of yours.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if fixed tariffs become a thing of the past before long, especially if the energy companies end up being charged/taxed based on variable customer usage rates under new green legislation.

Eventually, any remaining fixed rates will be set deliberately sky high to take advantage of the elderly and other folks who don't use the internet - exactly as the companies do now - as they tend to fear uncertainty and want to keep as much control and have as few surprises as possible, even if they end up paying dearly for the 'privilege'.
