Dental appointment for broken tooth in a month!!!

Yes, I'm aware there is a pandemic, backlog of patients, longer between patients to clean etc. I didnt expect to wait a month with a broken, painful tooth that is cutting into my tongue though! (Yes, I have regular check-ups, but my one in Mar was cancelled). How backlogged is your dentist currently?

Haven't heard anything from our dentist since our appointments were cancelled in March, June and August.
Spoke with a friend the other day who used to work as a receptionist at a dental practice. She said her former workplace are seeing private patients for both check ups and fillings but still not seeing NHS patients (except in an emergency).

Tomorrowsanewday · 17/09/2020 11:40

I saw my dentist a few weeks ago as a private patient. Just for a check up. Arranged 6 months previously.
Could you try the dental putty in the meantime?

BashfulClam · 17/09/2020 11:56

My 6 month check up was cancelled as they are only seeing emergencies. With the lack of check ups those emergencies might go up.

JustCallMeGriffin · 17/09/2020 12:36

I called our dentist about DD2 yesterday about an odd tooth appearance. They asked for a photo of the issue, called back and offered an appointment for today.

It's largely a private practice but we're all NHS patients so I was pleasantly surprised!

We're not allowed check ups though.

Rafflesway · 17/09/2020 12:39

I've had a check up, a filling replaced and a hygienist visit all over 2 appointments but my dentist is private, (Although not much more expensive than NHS for minor work etc.)

Sounds as if NHS are trying to use Covid to encourage everyone to revert to private. Disgusting behaviour!

Elouera · 17/09/2020 19:11

I never thought to ask whether paying privately would be quicker- despite the fact I often do pay privately! Just glad I'm not in agony, but the my tongue getting snagged on the tooth is getting painful!

You could try the wax they use on braces in the short term maybe?

I've paid private for a veneer refixing and will do again if the other one pings off (feels a bit loose again ffs). Normally done on NHS as they were NHS veneers (long story). But dentistry will never get back to normal under the NHS I think. Am looking at family dental plans for us.

killerofmen · 17/09/2020 19:16

I cracked a tooth during lockdown. Thankfully no pain but I suspect is one of those things that's going to get worse the longer it's left.

To be honest, my dentist was shit before lockdown (NHS, never has a waiting list and you can see why...) so I haven't even bothered calling them.

Willow2017 · 17/09/2020 19:16

I have been waiting 7 weeks just for the call to say I will get an appointment for mine!

Been using those temporary fillings you get in the chemist to stop my tongue shredding. THey are such a faff and dont last long but better than nothing (but arent cheap)

ohbrightlight · 17/09/2020 19:19

Toothy pegs is brilliant OP- it’s pretty much the exact same as the temp stuff in the dentist.

You basically roll it into a ball and put it in the hole and voila. Honestly I was 10/10 agony in toothache and it killed it.

Elouera · 17/09/2020 19:57

The reviews for toothy pegs are pretty poor though. If I cant find anything else though I'd give it a try. Anyone know where i could buy that bracer wax?

I broke a tooth about a week into lockdown and finally got it extracted in mid July, and then I had to pay to get it done privately. Extraction was the only option even going private, no possibly of any treatment involving drilling. I'm convinced the tooth could've been saved under normal circumstances but it was such a relief to get rid of it.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 17/09/2020 20:04

I was going to suggest brace wax too. If you google brace wax you can buy it on amazon, or boots...lots of places I’m sure.

I had to wait for a filling to be redone from July/August. I think I waited about 3 weeks after phoning. Then he booked me in for a follow up a week later without any trouble at all. I go to a private dentist.

Yugi · 17/09/2020 20:08

I broke my front tooth a couple of weeks ago. Got an appointment in a week and they put in a temporary filling but I would have to wait for a proper filling to be done. Mainly because that would involve drilling and that is a pain with the covid restrictions, they can't use the room for an hour after any drilling.
Or I could pay privately plus a cost to cover the room. I paid because I wanted it crowned rather than the NHS option which would just be a filling.

raspberryrippleicecream · 17/09/2020 20:08

DH got a broken tooth looked at at his NHS dentist two weeks ago, he had to send in photos and then they brought him in. My private dentist is doing appointments, but I can't make one just yet as I have two weeks from a recent Covid test

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 17/09/2020 20:40

I have a half finished root canal that I've been waiting since June to have finished. I won't get seen until the new year most likely.

AprilBaby29 · 17/09/2020 21:19

I work in a dental practice that does NHS and private. At the minute, NHS guidance is to only see people who are having problems, and to not pick up a drill unless absolutely essential. As we don't have to stick to the same guidance for private patients we can do a bit more for them, so might be why people are being seen quicker/having non-essential work done privately.

BlueJava · 17/09/2020 21:23

I called for an appointment at my local BUPA dentist (expecting it to be weeks) but they can see me at the end of a month for a checkup, also offered me a hygiene too. I am insured via BUPA (due to so much work done in the past). But it probably pays to call around.

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut that's utterly shocking! I feel really sorry for you.

captainprincess · 17/09/2020 21:56

I've been to the dentist twice since they reopened in June. I had a filling in august, and then went back just last week as having an issue. They are private though, so I guess that's makes a difference. It must be frustrating that NHS dentists aren't doing treatments.
Hope you get it sorted soon OP.

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 17/09/2020 22:06

I am an NHS patient at mine, but pay as private for the hygienist. Had a private scale and polish last week, but was told they are not yet booking any normal NHS checkups, even though I'm now 6 month over due.

amy85 · 17/09/2020 22:30

Ds2 chipped his front tooth a week ago...managed to get him a same day appointment...sounds like we were lucky

JaceLancs · 17/09/2020 23:39

I have had all my appointments cancelled (nhs dentist) then rebooked and also cancelled
My next appointment was November but they’ve already cancelled and not offered a new appointment

LeSquigh · 17/09/2020 23:42

My DP has a broken tooth (without pain) a couple of months ago and got a same day NHS appointment for extraction. Must have been lucky!

Torvean32 · 18/09/2020 04:04

I've some how broken 4 teeth during lockdown. Including a front tooth and the small one directly next to it.

I need to get a small denture for the gap. My dentist is in quarantine so i got told i could see another dentist.
The one i saw this week refused to help, she said that the dentist who pulled the tooth has to mould the denture.

I explained i have difficulty eating and she did not give a crap.

Sixgeese · 18/09/2020 08:22

I had my 6 month NHS check up a couple of weeks ago, when I mentioned that I was suprised it wasn't cancelled she told me she kept working during lockdown as she didn't want a huge backlog at the end.

My DH, and DC go to the same practise, different dentist, and theirs was seeing emergencies only. DH was seen for a root canal but he had to wait ages and make do with antibotics for what seemed like months and DCs checks ups should have been around Easter but were all cancelled. I have just managed to rebook their check ups for October. We are all NHS patients.
